Hi Everyone,

I have 3 year old, (next week), boys and we are fully potty trained during the day, but how do you train them at night??? We keep them in underwear until it is time to go to bed, then we put them in nighttime pants, and when they wake in the morning I have them on potty and back in underwear. Sometimes their pants are dry when they wake up and sometimes they aren't. Is there any magic formula I need to know? Any suggestions to get us out of any sort of training pants will be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

We had our daughter in a toddler bed at this age, so we kept another mattress under the bed already made up. When we trained, we put her underware and stopped diapers cold turkey. She had 1 accedent during the day and 2 or 3 accedents at night, we changed the matterss and the jammies when she wet and washed everything. The extra mattress made this easy in the middle of the night.
I think that letting her feel it helped. Now she wakes up and will go to the bathroom by herself and return to bed without waking us.
Oh, we got the extra mattress at a consignment store, so it was only $15 which is one pack of diapers.

Some Children's bodies are just not mature enough to go a whole night without using the potty until they are elementary age. With our son (he is now 3 1/2) we kept pull ups on him until he went 10 days in a row with having a dry pull-up in the morning. Once he did that, we put underwear on him, and he's had very few accidents. We also cut out all fluids after dinner unless he's been playing outside. When you are ready for underwear at night, be sure to have a waterproof matress pad on the bed. Good Luck

I would like to know too- after 2 weeks of our 2 yr old being dry in the mornings (with nightime dipes on) I tried big girl panties and viola - huge accident this morning. ARGG 99% of the time she is dry upon waking - comes to find us and we potty right away- so I thougth she was ready for nights too---

How do you know when they are truly ready for night time training.

It seems to be dependent upon the child. My 6 year old still sleeps in a pull up because she has a hard time with bed wetting, but my 4 year old has never wet the bed ever since he was potty trained at 3 years. I think it has to do with thier sleep habits (my 4 year old wakes up easily and is a "morning person" while my six year old has a hard time falling asleep but once asleep is very difficult to rouse.) I used to stress out over my daughter's accidents, but I find it less stressful for all of us to just go with the pull up. She will out grow it in a year or two according to the pediatrician.

My nighttime potty training techniques:

#1. No drinks after 7:30pm.
#2. Potty after dinner.
#3. Potty right before bed.
#4. Wake them up right before you go to bed to potty again.

When I enforced rule #1. that was all that had to be done.
