my son has been on Avent size 2 nipples for about a month he is 16 weeks. he does great on the 2's. i tried the 3's a few weeks ago and he was getting too much air and really gassy. i have some starting to wear out and didnt know if i should buy more or move him to the next stage (3). does anyone have an experience with their child staying on 2's for a while. i hate to order them if i dont need them. thanks

What can I do next?

I'm a breastfeeding mom but when my kids did get a bottle of my milk I never used anything more than the slow flow nipple ever so I'm not sure you even really have to change the size of the nipple. And given that your son can't handle the size 3 just stay with what he's is doing well with!

I was just talking to a speech therapist (who specializes in feeding therapy about this.) My daughter has to go to feeding therapy due to her poor nursing/feeding from the start b/c of her heart defects/failure to thrive. She is almost 13 months old now and uses a slow flow nipple on her bottles and is starting to drink well from open cups! Anyways, the therapist has her own five month old son, and she said she would never use anything but the slow flow nipple or stage one nipples - even for a baby without feeding problems. She said she won't transition to faster flow nipples but to cups. I would just stick with the size 2's - since that's working! (I thought this was interesting b/c I used up to the fast flow nipples with my first daughter.)

16 weeks is still very young and size 3's are (in my experience) generally for kids older than 6 months, at least. Have you tried to poke an additional hole or enlarge the ones in your old size 1's?

My son is 7 months old and still on level 1 nipples. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. As long as he's eating and gaining weight, don't waste your money, stick with what works :)

How about the variable flow one that is a size 1, 2 & 3 depending on where the nose is lined up. Then you can use them through the next stage too... Congrats on baby. 4 months is so much fun, wait until 6 months.... (The Best!) BTW... You probably have a couple more months on the size 2.

I would wait for sure- my son is 9 months old he is primarily breast fed but still uses an Avent size 2 for pumped milk or juice. If the 2 is working no need to rush up to the 3.

My son never went to size 3s. He would gag every time. Ultimately, I decided to abandon the "rules" on nipple size. He drinks out of sippy cups and regular cups just fine now. Personally, I think it's a good thing that he drinks slowly and didn't learn to gulp liquids down!
