My son is turning 9 in a few days and his teacher asks that we dont bring any cupcakes ect. Because of the sugar and they are unhealthy. Any ideas what else i can bring that is for his class but healthy? Kind of stupid it is one day, but will respect her wishes. Thanks for any advice...

What can I do next?

I know most schools now require you to bring in prepackaged foods, so it makes it more challenging. How about frozen fruit bars, strawberries, cuties (small mandarin oranges or tangerines but are easy to peel) or fruit trays, prepackaged sliced apples with caramel dip? Quaker has great rice snacks like cheddar cheese (tastes like Cheetos) or the small packages of chocolate mint in the mini sizes are yummy. If the teacher has a microwave, you can bring in a few bags of microwave popcorn to pop in class. Chips and salsa would even work. Bring in plates and give the kids chips and spoon some salsa on the plates if they want some. Think outside the box!

banana muffins, carrot muffins, fruit cups, yogurt parfaits, trailmix (don't forget the M&Ms) in individual cupcake liners, go to chex cereal website they have tons of recipes, Larabars are very healthy and have some great flavors.(They are made from dates and nuts.)

I agree this trend to take away cupcakes is stupid. It really is not the reason more and more children are unhealthy. It takes more then a cupcake here and there. Plus, by eliminating cupcakes we are not teaching children about eating sweets in moderation. I don't know how my kids made it to college and are healthy with all those cupcakes they ate. LOL

Fruit skewers. Veggies and yogurt dip. The rational for the rule isn't that 1 day of cupcakes is a problem. The point is that 26 days of cupcakes plus Valentines day, Halloween, Christmas, fund raising bake sales, etc are all teaching the kids that special events are celebrated by eating unhealthy foods. Lots of supposedly healthy snacks (muffins, rice krispie treats, etc) are loaded with sugar, fat and HFCS.

I usually send in muffins instead and use applesauce instead of oil in them. I did apple/cinnamon one time and blueberry before that, it is all in what your child chooses for the flavoring.

Could you bring zucchini bread? You might even be able to find a recipe that allows you to make them as muffins instead... and if you could put carrots in there too (like you would with carrot cake), then how can the teacher argue with that??!!

I understand:) IN the teachers defense saying it is one day is silly being it seems every day a kid is celebrating their birthday- which leads to a bunch of junk monthly in the classroom. Plus the poor teacher is the one that has the kids all day and if some react badly to sugar she is stuck with a crazy classroom.
There are so many healthy options and unfortunately I have had to find them due to food allergies....our "classroom" has so many food allergies it seems fruits and veggies are a safe option for everyone and can be doctored up to be something fancy:)
Costco used to have fancy italian ices inside of cute fruit (lemons, oranges etc) ....love all the ideas people have posted. Pumpkin bread is yummy with cream cheese too.
Ask your son what kinds of fruits and veggies he likes- it will be fun:)

pumpkin muffins made with evaporated cane juice with cream cheese frosting. they love the sweetness and the pumpkin flavor and it doesn't give them a sugar high.
