My husband and I are moving to Overland Park, 66224, next week. Does anyone know of a bank that has no fees for a checking account with no minimum balance requirements and overdraft protection and decent customer service? We do not need any interest paid. Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

Bank Midwest. They're local and family owned by Dickinson Financial who is based here in KC so there's a lot of incentive for the employees to give good performance since the headquarters and "bosses" are local. Any banking problems I've ever had have been quickly resolved. And my checking account is free.

I would NOT suggest Commerce. I had issues with them on my account while in college (like them charging me NSF fees when I did an ATM withdrawal and the ATM didn't give me the money!--it took two weeks to resolve and get my account refunded, ridiculous since ATMs are balanced DAILY, rude CSR who treated me like it was my fault that the ATM didn't dispense the money!), and my husband had problems with his debit card on his account shortly after we got married. We switched from there and haven't looked back!

I have been really happy with the Credit Union of JoCo. Not sure about their overdraft protection- I think it may be based on credit history or history with the bank. They will transfer from savings to cover overdrafts too. (They charge five dollars when they do this - but not every time. I don't know how they decide when to do this and when not to. I have never asked since it has always been my fault AND $5 is nothing compared to what US bank charges.)

I second first national bank. My husband loves them and has been using them for years! I would stay away from bank of america. We had a bunch of fees from them because they didn't count the money that was already deposited into our account when a draft came out. They charged us major fee's (even though the money was in the account) and refused to pay it back, so we closed our account. I know of several people who have had issues w/ them also.

Go to Johnson County Credit Union all you have to do since you will be a resident is take proof of your address. You have to open a savings acct to open a checking acct. The savings acct has a $25 minimum, but there is no access to that money, but if you decide to add to it the money over the $25 is available 24/7 cause they have free online banking & you can transfer online anytime. Then the checking acct has no minimum balance & it's free. All you have to buy is your checks. The atm/debit card is free & so it $300 in overdraft protection. If the money is available in the savings acct they charge a $5 transfer fee. (I try to make sure I transfer online b4 anything happens that's free!) If you bounce a check there is only a $23 overdraft fee (which is pretty cheap these days) and they will pay it for you & make your acct have a neg balance for up to $300. They will only return a check if you are more than $300 overdrawn! They have branches in Lenexa, Mission & Olathe. I've had my acct for 3 1/2 years & never had a problem.

I suggest Commerce as they have the more than free checking. And on-line is free. The major difference I have found there is with the on-line banking they don't take out the money until the due date you set. Where as other banks take it out as soon as you schedule it, which is crazy and a lot of times we don't have the extra money to cover 2 weeks worth. Customer service is decent.

I love Capitol Federal. They have awesome customer service. They have free checking with online banking and free debit card. I think maybe even free online bill pay is included now. They will also link your checking to a savings so that you can avoid an overdraft fee. They have lots of locations in the area. www.capfed.com

You want First National Bank of Kansas. ###-###-####. www.fnbk.com
They have a Leawood location 66224 and one at 135 and Antioch, as well as 8 others throughout Johnson County.
I've been with them for 10 years. No fees (actually reimburse you for atm fees!) Free overdraft protection and AMAZING staff. They actually called me once to let me know that I was overdrawn in my personal account because I had mistakingly put a deposit into my business account!

There are no fees for anything and they have a great program that DOES give interest for using your debit card 10 times per month. (Maybe 15, but since I use it for everything it's easily accomplished!)

Also: FREE online banking if you choose to use it. You'll have a personal banker who is available to you.

Trust me: you will LOVE the amenities of this bank.

There is no banking institution better than Community America Credit Union. I've been a member from long ago when they were just TWA's credit union. I've had car loans, home equity loans, checking & savings accounts. They are wonderful. Since you are in JOCO, you shouldn't have any problems finding a location. I live in Brookside, so I have to do all my deposits by mail since there's no location near me (my only complaint). However, they also have great on-line banking too, which is how I do most of my work with them.

Now if you want a bank with broader reaching arms, like ATMs everywhere, Commerce is good. I keep another account with them. Just make sure you have opened a line of credit for overdraft protection. Commerce is extensively found across MO & KS. I can even bank down in Wichita when I have to go there.
