No Laughing Matter: a Question about...LIGHT BULBS!!!

So this might be silly sounding, but the quality of light in a room is very important to me. It trips me up when it's not right. (I admit, I'm sort of compulsive about color and light and texture) Keep in mind that I live in the deep North West. It is overcast the great, great, great majority of the year. Like right now. *Sigh*. August fifth. 66.4 degrees, overcast, chance of scattered showers. Wintertime is damp and dark. It's a penetrating chill that accumulates after nine months of being thirsty for warm, golden, sun. Dark at four. Raining. Light at eight. Raining.

Good lighting is, for me, a must have. It creates a retrieve from the chill. ((Also, my wood stove. I do not understand how homes are built here without a natural dehumidifier, heat source, and the comfort of a crackling stove. Heaven is in a wood stove.))

Last night I was midnight grocery shopping and ran across a 7 year light bulb with full spectrum light. Heck, it's even energy efficient. Great! I'll pay 10.00 bucks for that. Brought it home, and it's...fine. Sort of. The light is sort of synthetic and depressing. It's like the light in a bad dream, just off. Somehow off. Like florescent lights. Do you know what I mean? I've tried to explain this to a few folks and they look at me like I'm speaking in Cantonese. So we'll see, HAH!

Anywho, I'm looking for a energy efficient, high watt light bulb, that has warm, clean light. Any recommendations? If it's going to last, I don't mind spending a few extra bucks.

"Winter is coming..."

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'll send some of my cool if you send me some of your HEAT!!! ;-)

Tracy, you made me laugh! I AM (half) Russian. Can you tell? Ha!

Now look sweet ladies starved of rain, I know, this CONSTANT drizzle has it's benefits. AND it has it's drawbacks. As in, I have a really hard time with it. My husband loves it (*cough/snort* Freak!!!! ((Just kidding!)) I don't. This is my home. The forest (where I live) is magical. I am short walk from the Sound, and summer or winter my babes and I walk for ten minutes and have an entire ecosystem at our finger tips. Tube worms, crabs, bladderwrack, kelp, seals and hard beach to comb for treasures.

AND I am THIRSTY for sun. Just my makeup. I grew up under the sun. My hair was white and my skin tanned brown. Naked, and sandy, and swimming. That's my place. But this is my home. And I love it. AND I love the Sun.

I'm just learning to have an open relationship with the Sun, and the kinks aren't worked out yet ;-)

I have to admit, I'm still using incandescents, because I don't like the lighting from the average energy efficient bulbs. I've tried, but they remind me of the inside of a drab subway car (depressing!) Of course, I haven't really looked in a while, but, I did just come across this article about a new "greenest" bulb. Unfortunately you'll have to go through another winter without it, because it won't be available until 2012. But, something to look forward to! :)

Yeah, you're right, those energy efficient bulbs have a weird light, but I do use them in most fixtures b/c of the benefits! Some of my stuff just can't use one of those b/c of the way it's structured, but if I can use them, I do. So, I guess you may just have to decide between energy efficient and regular old school ones!

im so depressed now. That was like reading a Russian novel. On the bright side (no pun intended) you managed to make me grateful for the, ever-sunny little hot-spot, I like to call Texas. It was 109 yesterday and I was weighed down by the heat. Now, after reading about your weather, I feel a spark of energy about it. What would I do without the sun shining brightly? I do get what you are saying about synthetic light being something out of a bad drea,. What was the Halle Berry movie where she was a mental patient? That kind of lighting wierds me out. I usually buy soft white bulbs in a high wattage to get the brightest light. I also like pink bulbs to flatter me when im trying to be romantical with my honey.

The problem is the the full spectrum light is more like sunlight - harsh. I don't think you'd like the "day light" types either. You're wanting the soft white or "kitchen" light that has a bit of pink in it that makes the light feel "warm".

You can do like some of the other suggested and find a lampshade in a pinkish color and see it that will help... maybe an overhead light that has a glass covering so you don't have a "pink" lampshade. Or put it in the bathroom? garage? Somewhere other then your living room.

hope that makes sense. :)

I'm so with you on this! My husband just doesn't understand. The lighting *has* to be right. I get headaches if it isn't. I found that the "blue" bulbs are not good for me. If it is in the blue spectrum, run. I like the "yellow" bulbs. They are warm and calming to me. The bulbs aren't really those colors, but on the package, it should say if it is a cool light or a warm light. Yellow is warm. Now, to answer your actual question: I hae no idea! But, maybe that tidbit will help. It took me some time to figure it out. We bought some high efficiency (non-flourescent,I despise flourescent!) lights that looked great, were more expensive, but also had the blue lighting. That's when I figured it out. We had to just get rid of them. I couldn't cope at all! Let us know what you find!

You might want to look for a light that is for SAD (seasonal affective disorder). They help with the depression that comes from the shortened hours of daylight during fall and winter.

You should consider becoming a novelist.

Oh...you're weather. You're killing me. It's been a 110 degrees here forever and our A/C has been out all week!

Anyway, we have not found one we really like. My husband is weirdly OCD about light, and he still isn't pleased. Like someone suggested, having the right shades helps some.

It might not just be the bulb, but the light fixture as well. Are there shades or accessories on the fixture that prevents a full sprectrum of light? I would go to a Home Depot or Lowes (or another home improvement center). They will totally 'get' you and you can see a lot of different lighting options.
Jealous of your weather...109 AGAIN today here!!

Wish I could bottle up and send you some of our Texas sunshine. We really have an overabundance this year!! Sunrise @ 6:44 and 86 degrees. Sunset at 8:24 and 101 degrees.....High of 108.

Sorry not much help on the light bulb ideas. I love your descriptions though!! As much as I am not enjoying this summer, I really hate being cold.
Good luck!

Make sure you read the end of my post on charging. being someone who is from the midwest and moved to the pacific northwest you really have no idea on how well you have it there, the weather is amazing. I lived there for 6 yrs and if I could I would move back but all of our family lives here in the midwest so we are back. As far as lighting the best I have found energywise is ikea energy lighting. We have one in our living room and I love it. One thing you have to remember about energy efficient lighting is they need to charge, typicall 4-8 hours their first use otherwise they can be very blah. Typically says on the package how long to charge them for. If it doesn't say on the packaging call them direct. It makes a world of a difference to leave then turned on for at least 4 hours on the first use.

Pretty soon you won't be able to get some of the "old school" light bulbs if that is what you prefer. They are not even manufacturing them anymore I believe. Legislated them right out.

I would love your dreary weather (I actually do like rainy, dreary overcast weather..always have). My teenager is allergic to the sun...she can do short doses, thats it. I just like overcast...and would love to be close to the mountains. I have cute rainboots too! LOL. They have Koi on them!

Good luck in your quest!

I have to say you write like a novelist I love your descriptive narrative. As for the lighting our local Home Depot has a display with the lights lit to give a general idea of the hue it will give. If your local store does not have anything like that ask if you can test it on one of their lamps. I cant give you any reccomendations bc mine dont say what type they are eccept 25w for 100w light. gl
