A lot of classic kids books are free downloads. For my 7 year old, I've downloaded Secret Garden, Black Beauty, the Jack London books allfor free. I've borrowed the Hardy Boys series from the library. (these are all books we read together, since they are above 2nd grade reading levels, but my son loves them).

Really, you can probably get about any kids' book from the library as an e-book.

For books to read on her own, see if you can borrow the Junie B Jones books from the library. Or the Judy Bloom "Fudge" series if she's an advanced reader (they are 3rd or 4th grade level).

My kindle is only a reader, it doesn't play games so I don't have any recommendations for games, just books.

You can get the Complete Wizard of Oz collection for under $5! I am reading it to my almost 6 year old son, we are almost at 1000 pages out of 1300 :)
I second Mynewnickname, the classics are great and a great deal!! Look at the under $5 section in the nook shop. They have lots of collections of classic novels for a few dollars.

Check out the "Free Fridays" selection on the website. Just type "Free Fridays" in the search box. Each Friday Barnes and Noble has a free book and a free app. The apps are almost always a kids game. Sometimes educational, sometimes just fun. I do download the book each week, but I've really only read a couple of them. But my boys (7 & 4) usually like the apps.

Not sure which one you got her, so please please tell me you set it up with a password protected parent account and a child account for her if it is the HD or HD+.

That said there are a lot of nice apps and books for them. In addition to the one in the B&N shop you have the google play apps as well. What are her capabilities? There are sightword apps that are age based. And simple books, chapter books, interactive books...
