Not Eating Solids Yet

My friend's son is 22 months old and is not eating solid foods yet. Although, he is very willing to try, whenever we try to give him solid foods, he will suck on it for a minute and spit it out and want more. He has just about all of his teeth, so we don't think it is from him teething.

What can I do next?

He needs to be evaluated, they should talk to their Pediatrician and call Early Intervention in their State asap because they only offer services till age 3, at least they'll get him evaluated by EI and hopefully get a Medical Diagnostic with a Developmental Pediatrician who will diagnose him and give recommendations to help him. Then they'll know what they need to do to help him with his issues. I called them for my son when he was 21 months, mainly because he wouldn't eat anything chunky, I had to grind everything to the consitency of stage 3 baby food. He has oral motor skill issues therefore a speech delay and a problem with chewing, also Sensory Processing Disorder, so a problem with food textures. A Speech Pathologist was working with him on the eating and the speech. His eating has improved but I'm still dicing and mashing, his speech is also much better but he still needs speech therapy at pre-school (he just turned 3). Tell them not to wait, they should find out what the problem is the earlier the better. If he's talking than maybe it's just a sensory issue but he'll still need help. Bernie

Your friend should make him an appointment with a speech therapist and an occupational therapist who specialize in feeding issues. What does this child's pediatrician say? Your friend should have the doctor screen him carefully in all areas of development and refer him for evaluations if other areas are also impaired.

Is it that he isn't eating baby foods or that he isn't eating table foods (pasta, fries, cheerios, etc) ? If it is that he isn't eating table foods, it could be that he doesn't understand the 'chewing' step. Your friend should talk to his dr. about this and he can give some recommendations for tests and/or therapy.

There might be sensory issues with food. 22 months is WAY too old, to not be eating solids. Is his development behind? Is he meeting milestones? I can't imagine, that the parents aren't concerned. They should first consult the pediatrician and get a ref feral to a specialist. This needs to be looked into ASAP, before he has other problems, due to lack of nutrition.
