Not Pregnant Yet but Looking for an OB

I've recently made appointments with a few OBGYN's on the West Side before we start trying to get pregnant, to see who might be a good fit for us. I'd love some ideas as to what "initial" questions I should ask when I meet these new doctors.
Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to everyone who offered friendly advice on questions to ask doctors (and to one of you who offered not-so-friendly advice on marriage- might be time for marriage counseling!).

I am touched by all the great responses and find your advice invaluable! Thanks again!

I might have the practice for you! I am a R.N. in labor and delivery at Cedars and I would highly recommend going to see Dr. Paul Crane or Dr. Anthony Chin (in the same practice). I went to Debbie Frank when I was pregnant (a certified nurse midwife) who is fabulous and in the same practice. It is not your typical "medical" practice. Phone number ###-###-####. I believe they will go to UCLA as well as Cedars for your birth. They are on Cresent St. in Beverly Hills but don't have address on me. Good luck!
PS Get your prenatal labs drawn before you get pregnant.

Hi, I have the absolute best OBGYN in the world. It took me a while to find him, but he is truly remarkable. His name is Dr. Peter D. Weiss, MD and he is located at 421 N. Rodeo Dr. between Santa Monica and Wilshire. He has a practice that includes many different resources for women and is, himself, an incredible human being. He delivered my first baby and was unfortunately on a short leave for my second. However, if you wish to be seen by a woman, there is a Dr. Alison Divine, MD who works in the same suite that delivered my second baby and she is great! Some good questions to ask are: What their beliefs on medication are, whether he is pro or con; His overall personality, whether he is peranoid or more relaxed (since labor is a stressful state, I like him since he was really relaxed); his overall trainning and schooling background; what his goals for his practice are(you don't want to chose someone who is retiring soon), and many more that you have probably thought of. I hope this has been helpful, but feel free to contact me is you have more questions.

Olivia Crooks in Santa Monica is the best and not only delivered my two boys but several of my friends children too - one was not originally her patient but due to an emergency ended up delivering her baby (safely) and she too now is with Dr Crooks.
As for questions to ask
Will the Dr follow your birthing plan
Rate of C-section to vaginal deliveries
On call situation
Who are the other OB/GYN's in the practice and will you have a chance to meet them (always nice to have a familiar face or be able to put a face to the voice on the telephone if you need to call in after hours)
Most importantly is the Dr planning any vacation time - especially around the time of your due date!!
What hospitals do they deliver at
Do they offer pre natal classes
What capabilities to they have to do in their office (3D ultrasound vs regular)
These are just some idea's, but there are pregnancy books out there you can buy that give you an extensive list.
Good luck

I am not sure where you are but I had the best experience with Dr. Perlow (Mrs) In Tarzana. She was the most kind, loving, thoughtful Dr. During labor she always touched my face and asked how I was doing. She still hugs me when I see her and my husband thinks she is great because she always took the time to tell him exactly what was going on and once my son's head was out and she knew everything was ok - she let my husband deliver my 2nd son. Then I got to hold my son right away for about 20 minutes while she finished up. I wish I had her for my 1st delivery. While it is very hard to get into her - I ended up seeing a nurse practitioner in her office first and as soon as I got pregnant I became her patient. The # to her office is ###-###-####

Hi I.,

I'm not sure where you live, but I have the best OBGYN in the world, the best office where everyone will take care of you and treat you like family.
Her name is Dr Emelda Tio, and she works with Dr Lauren Hymen in West Hills.
Teena, Willamena and Sharon have worked forever for the Dr's.
They all take time with you, tell you what you need to know, and Dr Tio is the sweetest person on earth. Before I found her I went to all these different Dr's, I didn't like any of them. Then when I moved to Burbank, and when I first moved I tried to find another Dr. again as I am not having any more kids I thought I might as well. No way! I will never go to anyone else ever! I now drive to West Hills, it is worth it, it is worth being treated with respect and such care that they provide there. If you haven't found one yet the number is ###-###-####

Just a note. I would not get a male OBGYN although they may be good Dr's they do not know or have any idea of what kind of feelings or pain we go through as women and having babies, or any of the other things that happen to women s bodies and minds.

Good luck with everything and I wish you and your husband (and that little twinkle in his eye) to be all the best!
