First of all, for all of you lovely mothers out there who have given me amazing advice and a sense of peace, THANK YOU! So I am reaching out to this fabulous network again! My 18 month old son has had a nasty stomach bug for the last 4 days. It began sometime Monday night while he was sleeping. Early Tuesday morning I woke up to him crying and went to his room to "rescue" him. Turned out that he had a dried poopy diaper. As you all will suspect....that created a HORRIBLE diaper rash. He has had severe diahrea ever since which by itself is difficult, but in correlation with the diaper rash it has been a nightmare. It has been near impossible to clear up the damage. We have been extremely diligent about changing his diapers immediately and we have made good progress on clearing up the rash on his bum. Unfortunately, I seem to be losing the battle when it comes to his scrotum. When I cleaned the most recent diaper, I found that it has gotten so severe that his scrotum is bleeding! I took him to our pediatrician today who told me that we didn't have much of a choice but to wait it out, keep doing what we are doing, and use a lot of diaper cream. So...is that really my only choice? Or does someone out there have some great magical remedy they can pass on?

What can I do next?

Use baby powder as well to absorb the excess liquids. I had the same issue with my daughter (stomach bug and all) The powder lessened the damage applied after diaper cream.

I agree with the Aveeno oatmeal baby wash, and I also just heard about another product. I don't know the actual name of it, but a co-worker of mine told me about an aloe vera spray that she got at Target. She said it's pricey (about $10 per bottle), but she said that you spray it on, and the poop slides off so you don't really need to wipe. I hope this helps!

Triple Paste is what my doctor recommended for my son when he had a bad diaper rash. I know that The university of Utah Clinic on about 7400 S. State used tohave it. I also got it from the Jolly Pharmacy or i bet any pharmacy can order it. It work wonders and quickly.

I have found A & D ointment liberally applied before bed can heal most chapped, chafed or burned skin almost overnight.

Poor little guy! My son had something similar when he was younger. It doesn't cure it, but it sure does soothe their bum and any irritated area, just makes a mess! Next time you are out stop by the store and pick up a box of the Aveeno (or generic) oatmeal bath. Add some to his next bath and let him "soak" in it. We use it every time my son has a rash or in the summer when the bug bites are horrible. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Let him soak in a warm tub with some epson salt once or twice a day for 10 minutes. The epson salt will help with the inflamation and help it heal.

Dry very well (with blow dryer, not a towel!), put on diaper cream. When he goes pee or poo, gently clean with warm wash cloth, dry with blow dryer and re-apply cream.

This should only take a day and it will start to clear up.

Hi M., So sorry about your little guys rash, it just makes everyone miserable! You might try cornstarch...just buy a box at the store, and sprinkle it liberally on the little guy, even over the cream is fine. It worked for me when my son was a baby and had a severe rash. Good luck! Hope he is better soon!

Poor baby! Poor mama!
You can try various protective creams to keep the area protected, but when my sons have had a vicious rash like what you're describing, the more effective treatment was simple nudity.
You might have to clean up a couple accidents, but just letting that skin air out and stay clean and try instead of trapped in an airtight diaper might make all the difference. I've only had to fight bad rashes a few times, but one I remember looked like my son had skinned his heinie on asphalt it was so bad--weeping and bleeding and everything, so I know how miserable this is. With that rash, I remember we did *no* wiping of his bum, and instead gave him little "bum baths" where we rinsed off his bottom half and then held him gently in a towel for a few minutes to dry him off.
If he's had diarrhea, all the good bacteria in his system have been cleared out. Consider giving him some yogurt or plain acidophilius to help restore balance so he doesn't get a yeast infection as he recovers.
Best wishes for a snuggly and healing weekend! ;)

oh,poor baby. All I can advice from my experience(4kids)when you're about to put (desitin...original only...no aloe)make sure his bottom is cleaned with warm water and completely dryed, than after 10,15 minutes go back and reapply. When he poops again don't try to rub it off the desitin just let it be there rinse his bottom he shoud be ok if he has diarreah it's just a liqud, shoud be easy to rinse it off. Use only desitin no other product. Hope this is helpful.

For "non-yeast infection" type diaper rashes, my doctor recommended what she uses on her children. It is called Resinol and can be found behind the pharmacy counter. You do not need a prescription for it. It actually has calamine lotion in it to help soothe. Works great for our little guys sensitive bum and scrotum. Good luck to ya!

Anytime there is skin that cracks to the point of bleeding, or even cracks, we should think yeast and fungus.

Internally, Caprylic acid can work to fight yeast. I think you can get the pills in capsules where you can dump the powder into something. Also coconut oil (raw virgin) has the same substance of capylic acid that is yeast fighting. Give him a teaspoon or two by mouth twice a day...if he'll take it. Although it doesn't bother me to take it like that, some people HATE to take it. You can put it on toast, or pop popcorn in it, fry pancakes in it, ect. I use it for my oil needs in place of canola which I used to use.

Do the probiotics as another mom suggested. There are different kinds. There is Lacctobaccilus and acidophilus. I've seen the lactobaccilus on the shelf, and accidophilus in the refridgerator at the health store. Although neither one should be warmed, I think accidophilus is the one that must remain in the fridge to stay stable. I have used Culturelle, a shelf stable probiotic, for myself when I get all forms of vaginitis. I take one by mouth and one vaginally daily for 3 days. Works like a charm.

A 1/4- 1/8 cup of epsom salts in a full big bathtub filled with warm water about 6 inches high might also help. let him soak 20 minutes. soften the skin immediately after with a small amount of coconut oil. After that soaks in for a few minutes, use a really good thick white salve like A and D with Zinc oxide or the Butt Salve the other mom suggested, before diapering.

Lastly, if he is drinking alot of cows milk you might want to stop it completely until he is clear. Milk REALLY feeds fungus. Don't use soy (as it is estrogenic - estrogen feeds fungus) , use rice milk for a replacement.

Have you tried Bordeaux's Baby Butt Paste? This stuff really works. You may still have to wait it out a bit but it works faster than most rash pastes. Another thing I do is change the diaper every hour whether he needs it or not and give him a bath a couple times per day. Once you gently dry him off after the bath, let him go 10 minutes or so before you put a diaper back on. The cleaner and dryer you leave it the quicker it will heal.

One last thought, if it still is not going away, he may have developed a yeast infection. In this case you can use any yeast cream on the market. If you are uncomfortable picking one, check with your doctor's office.

Good luck!!!

I have had good luck with Bag Balm or even Neosporin when my little guy had an open sore. Just make sure it goes on with every diaper change.

As moms I think we have all gone through a moment when diaper rashes seem uncontrolable. A few things I've done are the following:

*I start giving my child an infant probiotic (usually found in health food stores. Probiotics help put good bacteria cultures in the body which can help with diahrea. I'll mix it with food and follow the recommended doseage according to the age of the child.

*I will let them run around without their diaper to let their bottoms air out.

*Bathes with baking soda helps. I'm not sure why but I believe it helps heal the rash. Whenever I put my hand through bath water with baking soda it seems softer.

*When the rash is really bad and doesn't go away with ointments such as desitin, I will apply a small amount of anti-fungal cream to the area. This will really help clear it up fast. I usually find this in the pharmacy area. I look at the back to see if you can apply it for jock itch since I figure it is safe to put on a baby's bottom if you can apply it for jock itch. This isn't something that I just hear from another person. My pediatrician recommended it and it really works.

Good luck with the rash. Rashes sure can be painful for the baby and for you because you want them to feel better right away.

My daughter once had one that bad.... she would scream when she peed. It was so bad that we had her naked most of the time, and had a dish pan that we kept handy. Every time she peed or pooped (or at least 6-8 times a day) we would soak her in water in the dish pan for 5 minutes or so. This cleaned the area thoroughly, rinsing any bits of pee or poop off her bum. Then we let her air dry for 15-20 minutes, and put thick diaper cream on before putting her diaper back on.

Apparently acids from their waste can stay on the skin if you are just using wipes. Rinsing for 60 seconds in running water or a couple minutes of soaking will remove those acids.

It is so hard. I would also try to see if you could do bare bottom time once a day for 30 or 45 minutes. Maybe in the kitchen if you have carpet elsewhere?

Good luck.

Owchie!!

I'll share my tried and true regimne. It sounds a bit strange, but it's the best I've found, and I've tried lots of things.

I two things at once.

Fist use this Niperi Wash from the Nurturing Place. It's usually used to heal the vaginal area after giving birth, but it works like a charm for diaper rash. http://www.thenurturingplace.com/cmt/91.html

Then put on their Nipple Salve. http://www.thenurturingplace.com/cmt/92.html

I promise these work. My little son gets terrible rashes that hurt his scrotum too. It's well worth the price for these and they'll last you.

Good luck!

You have gotten some great suggestions. Nakedness, air drying, soaking in baking soda, yogurt etc. You just have to try each one till you find one that helps. I also saw yeast infection cream thats a good one and as odd as it sounds, the Malox can do the trick. It protects the skin from the acid that is burning his bum just like it protects your stomach. Generic Malox works just fine and is much less expensive. Good luck! I feel for you! OH! Once when we had the problem and didn't feel comfortable letting him run around naked we got the cotton training pants. They would catch most of the "accident" but are still breathable and let the air get to his poor bum. Good luck!

I am SO sorry for your little guy. My kids both struggled with diaper rashes. I'm glad the doc didnt think it was a fungal infection. I totally recommend the Triple Paste for these nasty rashes . In our grocery, it's just in the baby aisle and is comparable in price to the others. It's not medicated and it wont sting. They also make a really good eczema cream. My boys responded well to Balmex for everyday rashes also. Desitin never did much for my boys' skin and it stung. Boudreaux Butt Paste never really worked either and was expensive.

While the rash is still really bad, be sure to either rinse him in the tub with a little soap and water or rinse out your baby wipes so they dont sting. The key to clearing it up is to really slather
on the diaper cream.

Funny note - Many serious bike racers have a favorite "butt paste" that they slather on the chamois pad inside their shorts and on their private areas to avoid chafing on long rides.

I hope he feels better soon!

I have tried EVERYTHING and the thing that will work is Resinol. I just gave the rest of what we had to our neighbor two days ago, her daughter was going through the same thing, and she told me today how amazing it is. It is the one thing that I wish someone would have told me about before I had our first.

Get it from the pharmacy. Make sure the area is clean and dry and apply it liberally. You seriously will be amazed at how fabulous this stuff is. Our little girl would get blistering rashes but not once our Dr.'s wife recommended this stuff. Our little boy never had issues over a day because I used this when he started to get one.

It is a medicated ointment.

Sounds like your son will improve with probiotics. His rash began with a stomach bug, upsetting the balance of good and bad bacteria in his gut.
Probitoics are said to help prevent and relieve allergies, yeast infections inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowl syndrome, urinary tract infections, colic, asthma, autoimmune diseases, constipation, diarrhea and even diaper rash! You can purchase them in any whole foods store, look in the refrigerator section.

When we had a bad case of diaper rask, our doctor suggested a concoction that is made up of diaper cream and malox. It is difficult to mix and apply, but it did work. The doctor also suggested a warm bath with a little baking soda in the water. There is also a strong diaper cream called triple paste that you can get at the store - it is sometimes behind the pharmacy counter, but you don;t need a prescription for it. It is pricey, but some people swear by it. Your local pharmacy may have a a different home remedy to recommend.

Wow! Doctors sure have changed in the last 2 years. My kids doctor would always prescribe a prescription cream for their severe diaper rash that would clear it up in 2 days! The thing I found the best to work besides the prescription was to put neosporin on and then a TON of baby powder. Once the sores have gone then just dump a bunch of baby powder in his diaper until his bug and sores go away. The diaper cream has a chemical that can, in sensitive kids, burn their bottom and make them cry, as it did with my kids. But the diaper powder is cooling and wicks the moisture away and back to the diaper. Hope he gets better soon!
