What type of medication can I take for my runny nose. It wasn't bad until my nose has become raw and really hurts.

I am nursing my son and worried about losing my milk supply.

Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the quick responses. I woke up this morning with a pounding headache and of course a red raw nose. I guess it is good thing I am a SAHM.

It is safe to take thera flu!... And your milk will not go anywhere until it is ready something some parents do not know is as long as your baby gets at least that first two weeks of colostrum that is what is important. It may run out before you are ready for it to but it happens there is nothing you can do about it! It's okay. But it wont be because of your being sick! I breast fed all four of my children two of the four are twins! So trust me i know! I hope you feel better!

I'd check w/ the dr or pharmacist. Chlortrimaton (spelling?) was something I could take for allergies etc when I was pregnant. I also find that putting vicks (I prefer baby vicks) on my nose often, keeps the rawness from getting to bad.

Have you heard of a Neti pot? You can get them at natural foods stores and they allow you to clean your nasal passages with salt water. Dr. Oz swears by them. No drugs, so you don't need to worry about your milk, or it affecting your baby! :)

Good luck,

You can take Afrin nasal spray, but beware that it can rebound on you. Benadryl is fine as well.

HERE IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT:

Cold meds that contain pseudephedrine are VERY BAD TO NURSE ON! They can dry up your milk supply!

Phenylephrine however, is a safer option as it has NOT been show to dry up milk, but use it with caution.

I would probably just put balmex on my nose and keep on blowing :)

Make sure you read ingredients carefully for pseudephedrine and steer clear if it!

Someone mentioned Chlortrimeton, which looks like it is safe as far as nursing goes, but it may make mom very tired.

Peace :) - All info above from Medications and Mothers Milk, 2010 ed. by Thomas Hale PhD - AWESOME BOOK! Every mom should have one:

I use a Neti pot. I was unsure about it at first but it's not bad at all. Benadryl is also safe if the runny nose is your main concern.

I was never comfortable taking medications (except tylenol) when nursing, so I just suffered through. Talk to your doctor or a pharmacist about what is safe for nursing mothers; quite often it's not a heck of a lot! Lots of rest, fluids and try to maintain a healthy diet (to keep your milk up) including lots of protein.

What I've done for a raw nose after a cold is apply chapstick to it - it softens and helps heal the skin faster than if you just left it alone.

Keep nursing though; your baby will get your anitbodies from the breastmilk and hopefully he won't get sick too.
