NY Health Insurance

N.S. asks from Brooklyn, NY

Hi! My husband, son, and I are moving to Brooklyn from Massachusetts. We did some research, and found that health insurance in NYC is 3 times as much as it is in Massachusetts. I will be going back to graduate school over the summer and can get a subsidized student insurance once I start school, but until then, for about 3 months, we will need to find health insurance. My husband is a self-employed artist. We're desperately looking for an affordable option for Health Insurance in New York. Does anyone have any suggestions for plans/companies?

Hey-- Good luck with the move. You might want to look into Child Health Plus. There is also Family Health Plus I think. I think the Child Health Plus is about $60 a month per child. You might also want to check into Health Insurance through your school. It may be substantially cheaper. I am not sure about the Freelancers Union. It was quite expensive some time ago, when my husband was working freelance. We pay about $1500 monthly for a family plan through my husband's work. My friend's husband is going under Cobra and the they got quoted for $1800 a month. It is quite expensive, but unfortunately if you don't have it, it can be devastating.

Good Luck. Hope that helps.

I second Malinda's suggestion about the freelancers union and if that does not work you can also check out HealthyNY.com which is through the state. This is the insurance my family has as we did not qualify for the freelancers union and it is really good.

Hello,
A good option for self-employed or small business owners is the Freelancers Union. Check out the website. I don't personally have insurance through them, but I know several people who do and it seems like a valuable resource.
Good luck with your transition and your family!

If your husband is a "freelancer" he can join the Freelancers Union and get health insurance that way.

the situation here is really dire in fact if you find a good answer let me know. i was with freelancers union but this year they raised their prices so i opted out after 5yrs with them. i am now on my husbands but have to pay the full amount $460 per month. for the baby you can try going to childhealthplus.com but you cannot make more than $6100 a month as a family of 3 and you have to apply. we are making too much for that and so when we add the new baby to my husbands it will be another $350!!!! dont really know what we will do...

Yes, insurance in NY is outrageous! When I was unemployed I had emergency coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield. It literally only covers you in an emergency situation at the hospital, etc. Chances are, if you do need to go to the doctor during that three months, the visit will not cost even remotely close to any monthly insurance payment. You can cancel the hospitalization at any point so it is a good short-term option. I did this a few years ago, and it was only a hundred and change a month.

Best of luck to you!

We have Healthy NY. You must qualify based on your income level. Each company has different rates. We have the GHI family plan with prescription and it comes to around $8oo a month. I still think it is really high but it is our only option in our current situation.
