My husband is allergic to beer. Something with the hops we think.
You could be allergic to whatever the wine is made of. It definitely sounds like an allergy, but I don't think it sounds too dangerous.
So this is a weird question - those who are familar with me know I am not a, ahem, troll, but it is a Friday night, my son is at a football game, my potential love interest is otherwise occupied, and I am piffling around the house making appetizers to take to a friend's party tomorrow.
In the process I am enjoying a bottle of Chateau St. Michelle's Reisling, which is my go to wine - also, the salmon I cooked for dinner needed to braise in a white wine - hence the open bottle.
I have noticed lately, that when I drink, which I don't often, that the soles of my feet get itchy. Eh, maybe not itchy, but years ago I had a systemic allergic reaction to a medication that began with the same tingling, itchy type feeling in my soles and palms. It spread into hives across my body from the soles and palms. This sensation in my soles is similar, but there is no associated hives. Also, this wine is one I have enjoyed for years with no adverse reactions.
Any thoughts? Ideas? Similar experiences?
Yeah, I know, an odd questions from me - it has been an odd week.
I have decided that slightly odd feeling feet are a small price to pay for my favourite wine. Hmmm, upon reflection, I don't think the Pinot Noir I had the other night had the same affect.
Riley - one day I will beg you to send me photos of the Chateau :) and thank you for the information on the barrels - that may indeed explain the difference.
I will definitely look into sulfates and see wherein they lurk in the foods I consume to try and track if this is a new irritant for me.
Thank you all for not thinking I am completely crazy. LOL

Okay... so I live about 15 minutes from Chateau St. Michelle...
They changed out some of their barrels fairly recently (couple years ago). Which I know because I wanted to buy a couple (empty), but didn't have the cash on hand. New oak barrels will have higher vanillin levels (as well as other woody leeching), or if they shifted away from oak OR started using cognac wooden barrels... all 3 options could have changed the actual content of the wine. I don't know which they switched to (new barrells, non wood barrels, or cognac &/or other spirit barrels).
Or you could just be developing a bit of an allergy. Probably to sulfites which are added during the winemaking process to arrest fermentation, or added post ferment as a preservative (like when shipping internationally, wines tend to have MUCH higher sulfite levels, than local wines).
Some wines contain sulfites which can cause allergic reactions in some people.
For a while I had a problem with beer and red wine. My face, neck and ears would flush bright red and it would feel like burning right after a drink, and it would last for hours. It happened for a few months, then stopped. (Of course it didn't bother me enough to make me stop drinking it!) I asked my doctor and he suggested Rosacia, but he didn't seem to have a clue either.
I don't know. I have an ex-SIL who had some allergy issues with various alcoholic drinks. Not sure exactly the nature of it. Maybe it was just an excuse? lol Anyway, I remember not too long ago reading something about wine headaches, and essentially, it had to do with one of the ingredients they add to wine during fermentation or something. The sulfites, I believe it was.
Ever have any reaction to sulfites before? That could be it. They don't usually cause headaches, but rashes.
Just a thought.
Just a thought....I'm allergic to sulfur / sulfa and hence I am allergic to the natural sulfites found in wines. I love a glass of red wine, but must limit it to A glass, otherwise I pay for with a bad response. I have had the itchy feet and palms. For me it has progressed to horrible migraines and and GI problems.
Organic wines seem to sit better with me.
GL!
My husband is allergic to alcohol, especially beer and wine. He rarely drinks because the consequences of massive headaches, etc are too hard to handle.
I guess if you're willing to deal with the side effects and it's not endangering your life, you can continue to enjoy your favorite wine.
Allergies, or Intolerances can occur, at ANY time during a person's life.
So even if you have never had a reaction to wine before, you can now.
Here is a GOOD article, on Allergies v.s. Intolerances: (and I highly recommend you read this)-

"Preservatives", in foods, can ALSO cause an allergic reaction in some. Wines have Sulfites in it. It is a preservative. Also some dried fruits have it too.
BUT Alcohol itself... can also cause a reaction in some people. And, Wine has BOTH Sulfites AND Alcohol, in it.
I am like that. I am... allergic to Supfites AND Alcohol.
Each person has different reactions to it. But for ME... it affects my breathing ability. And thus, it is dangerous.
Sure, I drank alcohol before. In college, I partied a lot and drank ALL kinds of Alcohol. BUT... as I got older... the symptoms got worse.
So now, even with just two sips of alcohol, no matter what kind, I get a reaction. AND... even with Mouthwash (which has alcohol in it), it affects my breathing.
An allergic reaction, can occur as "hives" on the body. AND for some, it will then progress, into a swelling... of the breathing passages. SO, you need to be careful.
And in some people, you cannot predict, this reaction.
AND in some people, each exposure to the allergen or trigger, can create OTHER types of reactions. As well. So be aware of this.
And, be aware, that allergic reactions to these things/ingredients, CAN be, dangerous. Like me, it affects my breathing. Diminishing it.
