Off Center Belly with Twins

My belly button is a good inch off to the left, and I'm worried that one twin is much smaller than the other. Anybody have this experience? I am at 20 weeks right now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all! I feel much better knowing that it's probably just the babies position. I have an Ultrasound next week, but i wanted to see what others had experienced too. So as always I appreciate your knowledge and comforting words. I won't worry anymore!

Hi S.!

I only had one baby, but my belly button was also off for much of the pregnancy, so I wouldn't worry too much. I saw that you wanted suggestions for good products. We live by our Moby carrier (mobywrap.com), and it can hold twins!

Happy pregnancy,
L.

Congrats on the twins! Mine are two and they are a ton of work but SO much fun!

At 20 weeks, your twins should be pretty close to being the exact same size but you'll probably start getting a ultrasounds scheduled pretty regularly. (They'll be checking to make sure the babies are developing at about the same rate from here on out.) Twins normally arrive at the 36 week mark. Mine were 6.0 lbs, and 5.9 lbs.

The Graco Duo Glide Stroller is GREAT! I also really liked my twin nursing pillow (you can also bottle feed). Check out www.doubleblessings.com for twin products.

I didn't need anything else except for two swings and a TON of burp cloths, blankets, and newborn onsies. The first six weeks are the hardest - because you're sleep deprived when you're caring for ONE newborn . . . you get practically NO sleep during that first six week period but by having a ton of burp cloths, blankets and onsies you can cut down on the number of loads you have to run through the washer! Twins actually get easier at about the six month mark than singletons because they start getting interested in each other. I got more sleep with my twins than with my oldest because they would chatter at each other in the morning rather than yell for me as soon as they woke up.

You are only 20 weeks and I know for a fact that your uterus can be shifted to one side in early pregnancy so don't be alarmed. It may also be that the babies are both on one side. Always if you are concerned go to your Dr and have them do an ultrasound to give you peace of mind.

My belly was definitely a weird shape. I ended up with what looked like a lump on my right side. Turned out baby A had changed position (at 31 weeks) and now that lump was her head. Have an ultrasound and see what the babies positions are. That's probably the reason your belly button is off centered.

I can't tell you how many 'odd' shapes my twins caused my belly to look. Sometimes I had a bowling ball like protrusion on one side and the other side would be completely FLAT! Go figure. The kids can still move around quiet well. I wouldn't worry about being off center but do second seeing a Midwife or other medical professional who has worked extensively with twins!

Good luck mama. Feel free to email if you have further questions or concerns. It always made me feel better when I could go to someone who had been there done that.

Hi S.. I'm a midwife and my advice is not to worry. Yes, situations do occur when one twin is larger than the other, but that wouldn't even necessarily be reflected in the shape of your belly. At 20 weeks, babies are still all over the place! Depending on how they're positioned, your tummy could take on all sorts of weird shapes. This even happens with only one baby. :) If you and your practitioner feel that it would be wise to get an ultrasound, I'd say go for it, but an off-centered belly button, alone, should not be cause for concern. Blessings on the remainder of your pregnancy and congratulations on the twins!

Do you know the position of the babies. A relative of mine had that problem and it turned out both babies had their heads on her left side and feet on the right and her belly button was off center. I would say try and get in for an u/s if you are worried and talk to your o.b.

Congrats on the twins!

oh oh oh, I am an anti-ultrasound advocate

I know twins are at least an actual _reason_ to have u.s., but midwives can find the heads and estimate gestational size and lay (and so can OBs, if they've had the training) ... if there is a local midwifery organization, they might be able to hook you up with a midwife who has worked with twins before ...

best of luck, God bless,
K.

Are you seeing an obstetrician? If you haven't had an ultrasound, now would be a good time to have one. The doctor is the only one who can tell you if one baby is smaller than the other and if that is a problem.

It's my thought, that as the babies move, your stomach will change shape which could affect the location of your belly button.
