My mom called me a few days ago and she was talking about the ring Prince William gave to his fiancee. In her opinion the ring is pretty but she doesn't see why people are making such a big deal about it. I was totally oblivious and had to google the ring. It is a sapphire ring surrounded by diamonds and cost $40k when it was originally purchased. Anyway, it got me thinking about engagement/wedding rings and whether more people prefer diamonds or something else. My ring is a princess cut purple sapphire. My husband's ring is tungsten (I have no idea what is popular for men). So, what is your wedding/engagement ring's primary stone?

What can I do next?

I'm fairly certain the reason people are making such a big deal about it is not because of what it is, as much as because it was Princess Diana's.

I'm traditional. My stone is a marquise cut diamond, with side stones, and additional stones on the wedding band/guard itself.

But, the reason I believe that the Prince gave that particular ring to his fiancee, is b/c it was the one his mom was given/wore. Who knows whether he would have chosen a blue sapphire for her ring, if it hadn't been his mothers.

Diamonds here!

My hubby picked out my rings all by himself and I love it! My engagement ring is a platinum setting 2ct. total, with 1 ct. round in the center, with marquise diamonds on the side w/round diamonds tapering down the sides, it looks like butterfly wings on each side...it is absolutely stunning!

I didn't know it at the time, actually didn't know it till it was wedding time and I brought up the subject of needing rings, but my hubby bought both our wedding rings the same time that he bought my engagement ring, those are both plain platinum rings, nothing fancy. ~He must have been pretty sure I was gonna say yes!

~He spent a fortune on my ring...way more than I would have let him if he had taken me with...but he wanted to do it himself and picked out the big stone to ensure that it was flawless! Every time we take it back to the store to get it cleaned, someone always mentions to me how sweet he was when he was there "trying to pick the most perfect ring"!

It makes me smile every time I look at it...and it has been almost 14 years!

I love my rings, we waited until we went on our honeymoon to get my diamond. For my actual engagement ring it was a heart cut ruby with a couple of small diamonds. My wedding band is a standard gold band, my ring that I LOVE is a 1.03 carat diamond and 2 rubies on the sides - I got it before it began to become popular - we got to pick out the stones ourselves and I got to go downstairs to where they set the stones and tell him how I wanted it to sit in the ring. It will be one thing I will never forget. We got it down in St. Maarten, and I also got a matching bracelet and for our one year anniversary hubby completed the collection with a diamond and ruby necklace.

That ring is Princess Diana's engagement ring, so very sentimental to William. Apparently Diana chose it herself from an assortment of rings sent over from the royal jewelers because it was the "biggest" O. there!

Myself, I have a 1.5 c marquis cut solitaire diamond joined to a wide gold band.

Now, I would probably prefer platinum.

When we got married I wanted my band to be the simple anniversary band and then I had a 1/2 carat cz in my solitaire - it's all we could afford at the time and my hubby's original band was a sterling silver band from walmart. We later upgraded his to tungsten too. Then after 3 years we were able to upgrade to a 1/2 carat diamond. Then about 7 mos after we upgraded to that I found a beautiful engagement ring that I just fell in love with and it fit with my original wedding band. It has 4 princess cut diamonds on top (in an invisaline setting) with 10 round diamonds in the band part running under the bridge they call it. This past year I had the jeweler take off the shank (where the diamond sits) off of my solitaire ring to make it just a band. So, now my wedding ring ensemble is actually 3 rings. My orig wedding band, the newer engagement ring and then I the band part of my solitaire and it sits on the other side. So - I have the two original rings that I said my vows in surrounding my beautiful engagement ring. Kindof a long story - but I love telling it - because each piece has a meaning. I have diamonds in my wedding set - I don't know how much carat weight is there - but I just fell in love of the design and it's sturdy which I need especially of the type of work that I do.

My engagement ring is a princess cut aquamarine ring surrounded by small diamonds, with diamonds around the band. It's exactly what I wanted! Actually, I went with my hubby and picked it out! I also loved the price! It's gorgeous! My wedding band is just a simple diamond band. My hubby's band is tungsten with a blue/black carbide inlay...it's awesome!

I like the traditional diamond. My engagement ring has a solitaire and two smaller diamonds. My wedding band is 8 small diamonds. It's really beautiful, but what I love most is who it came from--my very best friend!
We picked the rings out together. I'm not married yet and still need to buy his ring, which will be a silver band.

Good lord. I cannot imagine spending forty thousand dollars on a ring. Well, diamond's aren't this girl's best friend...

My ring is actually really, really beautiful. It's an antique and made from cubic zirconia and sterling silver. I get compliments on it on a daily basis...and we didn't have to sell our house or kidneys to afford it ;-)

My husband wears a silver band. He has to take it off every day that he works (he dives and his hands swell from the cold) so the risk of him loosing it is incredibly high. I'm actually surprised it's still around.

Diamonds :D I mine is set like a Past, Present, Future ring. It has 3 emerald cut diamonds that are all the same size. The one in the center is set high, so it looks bigger. There are 6 small princess cut diamonds, 3 on each side. My wedding band is a bunch of small diamonds, I think they're baguettes (sp). I picked a modest size for mine since I have small hands.

Actually, I think Prince William gave Kate his *mom's* engagement ring. Maybe that's why it's such a big deal? IDK

My engagement ring is 3 princess cut diamonds. I picked it out and, while I still like it, I hardly wear it on account of it scratched my baby's eye once (baby was fine thank goodness). My wedding band is a plain, smooth white gold band. Simple and I LOVE it. I'm not big on flashy jewelry though.

My husband's ring is also white gold but it has 2 ridges running along the circumferance to 'jazz' it up a bit.

My engagement ring is an emerald with 2 rows of small diamonds on either side. We designed it together and my husband had a friend who was a jeweler make it up for me. At the time (25 years ago) I thought it was really unusual and unique to have a colored stone instead of a diamond, but I'm seeing it more and more lately. Both my SIL and best friend have sapphire/diamond combos. I love diamonds too, just wanted something a little "different".

I can't lie....I love diamonds. But, if I get married again, I think I'll go with white topaz. I just really like it and you can get a pretty big rock for less than what a diamond would cost.

Just my opinion.

I dislike diamonds...really most sparkly gems. They are too girly for me. I do like opals though. My husband and I both have white gold bands. I designed our rings. We have a design going around the bands that I designed that reminds us of Alaska (where we lived for 14 years). The inside is a ring of gold from our friend's gold mine in Alaska that I helped mine/pan. :) Another friend made the rings for us.

I have a solitare, round, miners cut (old diamond), no accent stones, just 1 (3.2) carat diamond. It was a surprise and shock to me about 2 yrs after marriage. I take it off to clean it and that is about it. I never remove it in front of anyone, have it cleaned in a store, etc. I am still in awe when I look at it after 20 yrs.

I don't wear a lot of jewelry. Just my diamond and wedding band (gold) some very nice diamond stud earrings (1.5 each) and a very, very nice watch (gold Rolex) Nothing else. I pay $1000 per year extra for insurance on my jewelry.

My husband had a simple gold wedding band just like mine until he was in a car accident and they had to cut it off. He no longer wears a ring.

I have all diamonds (it all adds up to about 1 carat). 3 princess cut on the engagement, then the wedding band is tiny diamonds all around.

If I had to pick something out now I would go with something different like a different main gemstone; sapphire, maybe something pink. Accented by tiny diamonds. I really like the Kate's ring.

My hubby has a platinum wedding band. Nothing on it.

dh did traditional but at the time the shape he wanted was NOT common like it is now. That was 20 And I had no idea that they even made heart shape diamonds back then! They were not highly popular or common as they are now and were hard to find. He also designed a ring guard for it but we haven't as of yet found someone to make it.
It is on white gold (gold gold looks horrid on me) and on each side I have 2 white gold 2mm -super thin white gold bands. Once we find someone to make his guard though they will go in my lockbox:)
I love them and how it looks though!!

My mother has the most beautiful pink tourmaline for her October birthday. I think it is a large square and some little diamonds on the sides of it. I've never ever seen anything else like it.
