Oh My God I'm Craving Alcohol & 20 Weeks Pregnant

So I am not even a drinker, maybe a daiquiri or margarita here and there, but once I was out of college the desire subsided. Here I am craving like there is no tomorrow a good tall glass of wine--and wine does nothing but give me a headache. Maybe its because I literally have had one drink in the last 6 yrs, or maybe its because I'm sick and the kids are driving me nuts. But please tell me I'm not alone in this off the wall craving? I even half joked with my OB about bringing the drinks come 'labor day"--due cinco de Mayo of 2012--it did cross my mind..

so for the question if your pregnant what are you craving? Or when you were pregnant what was the weirdest craving you had? I just want to grab a big glass of wine, hit the tub and go to bed....

What can I do next?

Buy some O'Douls beer. It's non-alcoholic beer. See if that helps. Maybe it'll take care of the craving.

I bought it when I found out I was pregnant with my second. The next week, the morning sickness (all day long) began. I couldn't even open the bottle, much less drink it, I was so nauseated. Since you don't have my problem, try it.

Good luck!

You're PROBABLY craving lycopene, and your body is telling you to go for the most concentrated source it knows.

It's found in tomatoes and grape skins.

So try those. Marinara, grape juice (concord), tomato/basil/mozz (aka caprese salad), roasted tomatoes, whole grapes (red or purple), etc.

It's like craving red meat on your period... but spinach will ALSO get the iron fix.

Lycopene is one of the things your body uses to moderate vasopressure / bloodpressure.

Pour your favorite fruit juice in a fancy wine glass, it makes you feel grown up and as if your are indulging yourself! With my first child I craved green peppers, mostly pizza with green peppers, with my second child I craved pink lemonade. I was dehydrated (from vomiting) a lot in the first trimester and used to dream about watermelon and ice cream ...

When preggers...I ALWAYS had cranberry juice...in a wine glass.

It was 'tart' enough to feel like wine (and I was...and AM a big wine drinker)...but was a healthy alternative...and the wine glass was 'festive'.

Also...when preggers...I HAD to have a frozen burrito or 3...slathered in sour cream and extra cheese almost nightly...

Go figure...lol

Best Luck!

I didn't crave alcohol - but I do know some mom's who did. Their OB said "anything in moderation...." that being said - ONE drink - margarita, daiquiri, etc. won't hurt the baby - unless it's like pure alcohol with a TAD bit of ice! LOL!!!

I don't know how old you are - but remember - back in the 60's women drank and SMOKED while pregnant!! OH MY!! Again - it was moderation. Is it healthy? Heck no! But you can have a drink...talk with the OB and see what she says.

I hope you aren't taking a hot bath! That's worse than alcohol!! The baby can't cool off!!!

I craved cheetos to no end my first trimester. I'm 19 weeks now and have a major craving for deviled eggs and baked potatoes.

As for the alcohol, can you make an alcohol free spritzer punch? Like with ginger-ale and sherbet or grenadine and cherries or something?

I did give in once and have an O'douls ... then after it touching my lips I was done and the mere smell of alcohol made me want to puke! Maybe if you make a steak with a reduced wine sauce so there is no actual alochol that will help your craving! It will make you THINK you are enjoying it but not really. I wanted fruit and fritos, specifically strawberries & pineapple!

When I was about six months pregnant I attended my brother's wedding. I had my OB's blessing to have a glass of champagne for the wedding. We attended another wedding and she gave her blessing for me to have another glass of wine. Her only stipulation was that I drink my single glass (per wedding) after a meal. I saved it for the toast.

By "a glass" I mean "a serving" and it was a literal serving... only a few ounces and not a full tilt glass. I think a serving of wine is technically between 3-to-5 ounces?

My point is to talk to your OB. A single glass ie. a single technical serving shouldn't do any harm. A sign that you'd be drinking enough to pass through the placenta into the baby is if you feel buzzed. Buzzed means drunk. And if all you want is a few sips to satiate the craving rather than a whole serving, then I honestly don't see the problem. Although I did enjoy toasting champagne with my OB's blessing I couldn't actually finish my glass. A few sips was all I needed to curb the desire.

With my first...anything sour apple, dinty moore dinners and margaritas. I would go to Walgreens and buy sour skittles and eat all the green out. So gross. With my second- creme filling. I never had a Twinkie before and tried one. And threw up. So, I would dip teddy grahams in a jar of frosting. Isn't that disgusting? Now, I crave coffee. I almost bought a machine. But, I haven't had a cup in 10 years and don't like it. And I am never around anyone who does drink it. Weird!?

Aweird craving I had was for Chablis. I LOVE wine and good beer, and I do drink, but I didn't drink while pregnant except for a few glasses of wine in my 3rd trimester. There was a point in BOTH pregnancies though, where I almost couldn't contain my desire for A LOT of chablis! I'm not a very big fan of white wines at all, but I wanted it so badly, I literally wanted to turn a giant bottle of it up and chug it! Sooooooo bizarre! So no, you're not alone. I believe my craving was around 20 weeks as well -both times.

If I were you and felt like I could be sated with a glass, I would have a normal-sized glass of wine! However, I didn't have a glass because I didn't feel like I could control myself I craved it so badly, and I felt like it would make it even worse if I could only have a little without that "gulping, chugging" factor.

I'm you. All I want is a couple of glasses of wine (not just one) or an ice cold beer and some crabs. I don't drink regularly, we don't even keep beer in the house because it goes bad before we can drink it and all our wine is gifts from others that we only open when we have company. I also can always eat Mexican, but want nothing to do with chicken. I craved wine when I was pregnant with my daughter, but once I had her, my craving went away and I didn't have drink until I was in Hawaii 5 weeks later. I also don't typically like Nutella, but I've been eating it like crazy now that I'm pregnant.

My OB is a firm believer that if you are craving something, there is something in there that your body needs. She always told me to give into my cravings. Of course, I'm not saying that you should have an entire bottle of wine. But a few sips couldn't hurt.

Just to be clear, I am completely against woman drinking during pregnancy but at the same time I don't think that a small sip would hurt anything (Plus, it will make your craving go away). :)

I had a surprise pregnancy after about 6 years of marriage. I had NO IDEA I was pregnant - it was Super Bowl Sunday. We are not sports fans, but my husband had a friend over and I made some "football food". I have never been much of a drinker. I have never even been tipsy in my life. I drank TWO bottles of beer over the course of the day. My husband couldn't believe his eyes. He had never even seen me drink a half of a beer. A few weeks later I found out I was pregnant and I cried to my OB/GYN that I had had 2 beers. She told me not to worry. All I can say is that I craved a beer every day for 9 months. I never had one, but it's all I thought about. I also craved beets which I had never eaten before in my life. I think I ate beets every day for 9 months. A few weeks after I delivered my daughter, my husband offered me a beer thinking I'd love to have one - nope, didn't interest me anymore. Go figure.

I am not much of a drinker anymore, but while pregnant with my youngest son, I suddenly had a psycho craving for for some daiquiris, something yummy and tropical: pineapples, coconuts, something cold and delicious for those hot summer days. One day I was driving down the road and the craving was so strong I seriously got tears in my eyes! That evening as I was pulling into the garage, I noticed that my little air freshener in my car was "pina colada". I realized I had gotten those cravings about a week ago, after getting my car detailed and that little air freshener put in, and that just cracked me up! I made a pineapple smoothie and didn't have another thought about it, except to make fun of myself. The cravings disappeared (I think I may have tossed the air freshener, but can't remember).
I think with it being the holidays, wine would be on your mind a bit? Is there something you could drink to substitute? Like make some nice warm nonalcoholic wassail, put on some lovely music, and hit the tub and bed then?
My only other craving was red meat. There were a couple times I got a little psycho with it---one time I called my husband on my way home from the shops very concerned about my sanity. I was driving down the road and there was a pasture with a couple cows eating grass on the other side of the fence....I felt a strong urge to cut one and lick its blood. That was disturbing and I called home thinking something was real wrong with me. He said "No worries---I'm putting Joe's shoes on, and when you get home, we'll go to a steakhouse...you just need some meat". It went away when I ate a good steak. 3 weeks later, I had a dream that I was at a Pizza Hut drive through window trying to pull a calf from the backseat of my car to the front seat, and then push it through the window so the Pizza Hut guy could butcher it for me. I told my doctor about it at my appointment that week, and he checked and sure enough, my iron was real low. He gave me some low dose iron supplements, and I adjusted my diet to eat more iron-rich foods, and never had another issue with a cow.
And both pregnancies, in first trimester, pickles were DIVINE.

My mom craved wine with my brother. So, she finally caved and ordered a glass of wine with her dinner one night, took one sip, and got sick! That was back in the 80s.

When I was pregnant, I didn't have any weird cravings, but I would go on "kicks" like I would only want PBJ for days in a row, or only want spaghetti, or pesto. I did not like the smell of meat so my husband had to do a lot of cooking, and broccoli was an aversion (esp. cooked and even though I LOVE broccoli). My worst aversion was MINT!!! Every time I brushed my teeth I got sick...mint ice cream, mint antacid, candy canes, YUCK!!! I still am picky with anything mint and my little man is 18 MO! :-)

I remember craving beer for several weeks with my last two. Like you, I am not a big drinker either. And frosting, but not at the same time. With my middle child, I went through about a six to eight week period where I just could not get enough red meat and eggs. A local restaurant had a pot roast omelette and I think I lived there for two weeks! I probably ate more hamburgers during that time than I have the rest of my adult life, because I am also not really into red meat.

As for the "labor day" celebration, a hospital not terribly far from me gives a steak dinner the night the baby's born, complete with champagne. It's not where I delivered, and the last thing I've ever wanted to do after birthing is eat or drink (probably the only time in my life that's true, LOL), so I didn't miss it. But I say, if you still feel that way when the baby comes, seriously, you will have earned it.

I'm 20 weeks too. Last time I didn't crave alcohol or much of anything, this time around is much different. I have had massive cravings and all for pretty goofy and really unhealthy things! Pop-tarts, jolly ranchers, fritos, sour patch kids, and BURGERS. Eeek. And when I say cravings, I mean, stop everything, I can't think about anything else until I get it into my body and even then I want MORE. :) I also have had a really strong urge for beer. Since I can't indulge in that, I find myself taking major sniffs of my hubby's beer. I have been using my super-nose powers to get at least the smell into my body. My husband gets a bit creeped out, but honestly, it does help a bit. :)

First child- I wanted a good hearty bowl of oatmeal every morning (with brown sugar and raisins)... and also PB&J toasted English muffin sandwiches.
2nd child it was cold cereal with cold milk and tall glass of OJ... I rarely drink OJ but I had to have it the house just for those 9 months :)

Also, both times I craved enchiladas, more specifically the SAUCE. mmmm. must have been the lycopene as someone mentioned.

I would treat yourself to the bath and just a half glass of vino to sip on.... just see if that helps, one time won't hurt. After that I'd try to make a grape juice spritzer (white grape juice with a little tonic water or club soda mixed in- if you're craving white. Or purple grape juice with the soda if your craving red, maybe cran-rasperry or pomegranite for a more "complex" fake red wine!)

Not a big drinker but with both of my pregnancies, i have craved beer from beginning to end. An amaretto sour, margarita, or pina colada would be freaking amazing to have too, but beer is what my body craves like crazy!! (I've taken a couple sips of one here and there just to ease it a bit, i admit). Oh, and also like A G said; cigarettes. I also quit when i first got pregnant, but now in my 8th month, and for the last month or so, i almost feel like i cant wait to have this baby just so i can smoke a cigarette!! I am going to breastfeed, so im not planning on actually starting again, but damn i want one.
