Oh the Smell of Pee :(

I got such awesome responses about the ants, I had to ask about the dog too...

We have a six month old chiweenie (chiwawa & wiener dog) that has had several accidents on the carpet and piles of clothes the kids have left on the floor. I have washed and scrubbed with rug doctor ped odor remover, lysol & oxyclean. The confusing thing is that as soon as we are done with the washing part everything looks good and smells good. Then the carpet dries or we put clothes in the dryer and we have the horrible realization that the smell is not really gone at all. My husband takes his pants out of the dryer and realizes at work that they smell like pee. Even if we get rid of the puppy I still need to get the pee smell out of whatever I can to save our house from the huge expense of replacement. Does anyone out there know a sure-fire rid of dog pee on carpets and laundry?

What can I do next?

White vinegar will neutralize the urine odor.

Use one cup of vinegar for a small load of laundry and wash in the hottest water the laundry can handle. After the spin cycle, wash the clothes again in your regular laundry detergent.

For the carpet, use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and hot water on the urine area.

(If you have a carpet cleaner, I'd recommend going over the area with your regular carpet shampoo (I like Resolve); otherwise your house will smell like vinegar!)

soak the spot in white vingar, lay a towel over it until it dries. I haven't had the trouble with the smell staying in clothes tho... you could try useing the vingar too, but I don't know if it would stain or fade the clothes.
Plus using the veinger other than the smell that does go away, it's safe.

As for the doggie peeing, you might take him into the Vet to check to see if the dog has a bladder infection or something else going on.

Yes, like Erica said...Vinegar.
- Vinegar removes the pee odor and prevents the pet from going in the same spot again. Note, the vinger smell will go away.
- When my girls make an accident on the carpet I soak it up, then put down vinegar (let sit for a few minutes) then follow up with a cleaning.
- When they make an accident on clothes I launder with vinegar and baking soda
- Also, you could consider a doggy diaper until your dog gets the hang of going potty outside. Note that it gets tiresome to constantly take the diaper off when the dog goes out but it will help save the house (carpet/clothes) from the pee pee surprises.
Good luck!

Is it a male, and if so, is he neutered? Most male dogs will mark territory, and in every case when we had a male dog, neutering stopped it. I've read some female dogs mark territory also, but I don't really know if that's true or not, and if it is, if spaying would help that or not.

For stains, I always soaked the stain in carpet shampoo for pet stains and then covered with a rag or towel until it was mostly dry, then cleaned the spot with my carpet machine. Vinegar also works when you're out of carpet cleaner or Nature's Miracle(which also works very well).

Good luck!

A product called Pets and Kids worked for us. With the carpet you may have to pull the carpet up and seal the sub floor. I know that My parents have had their carpet profesional cleaned several times. And any time the sun hits a spot where a cat has peed it still smelled, because the pee soaked through the carpet and pad and down into the plywood sub floor. Good luck.

Look into crate training the puppy,it should not be away from your side until it know that dogs go pee outside.

Anti Icky Poo. You can find it at a natural pet store. It is an enzyme that will eat the pee. I was amazed - it works. Even got the cat pee out of my fleece!! Also helps get rid of possible staining - depending on how long it has been there and is non-toxic!! Amazing stuff.

Fabreze!! Laundry Odor Eliminator.
Blue bottle with gray cap, found in the laundry section of Wal-mart or K-mart(only two stores I've found it). It's about $10 for a bottle, but let me tell you, it's saved us tons of $$ in clothes and blankets. I use to just throw them away, then my mom introduced me to it. You just put a cap full in your laundry soap dispencer, or in the tub, along with your soap.
We tried vinager, simple green, and many other products, but they never completly got the smell out, and they smelled bad, but Fabreze Laundry Odor Eliminator smells good!!
We have 4 dogs, and 4 cats, and it gets rid of both smells. Works great on other odors too...both my son and I are sensitive to most laundry products, and this does not bother us.
Don't get rid of your puppy...before you try this product!!!
I love this product so much, I should buy STOCK!!!

Vineger, vineger, vineger. I promise. Don't even bother with other products. It's cheap and effective. Will be a bit vineger stinky at first but that will go away. It works great on all funky smells. Just dilute with water.

You might want to try puppy training pads that you can put on the floor there is also an attractant spray that you can spray on the pad so that the puppy will go to the bathroom there when you can't take it out. That will save your carpet and laundry. Also Petsmart does offer potty training classes almost every weekend they offer tips on how to potty train your pet. For the odor on the carpet have you tried Simple Solution or Odorz out both these work well. As far as laundry I would try the Fabreeze suggestion.

R.,
I saw that someone suggested Sol-U-Mel already. I've used it for about 6 years now, and it works great. Only you have to know someone to order it for you from Melaleuca. I am not a member any longer.
Good luck!

Hi R.,

Please please try NATURE'S MIRACLE!! You can get it at Petco, and it is awesome! One spray, and the smell of nasty cat pee (from our male cat) was gone!!!I could not believe it! It is also used as a pre-treater on clothing. You can use it on any surface and it's organic too, so it's completely safe, and it smells so good! I will never try another product. This one does it for me!
