I am using a 5 year old swing. I have never heard of it being a problem. I do agree with the other response about a car seat. It is okay to use those if they have not been in an accident but safer just to get a new one.

About me: I am 30 years old and have been married for almost 4 years. I am a first time mom of a gorgeous baby girl.

I have a swing that is almost 6 years old, it was given to my nephew when he was born 6 years ago.... I used it for my first Daughter (3.5) and I'm using it now for my 8 week old. If it has a safety belt you should use it, your baby will be safe.

I think a 5 year old swing is fine. Think about the the swings you see in childcare centers...they can be older than 5 years and are used much more than a swing at home is used.

I would use the swing but get a brand new carseat (saw your other question). The carseat is a serious safety situation and you can't be sure of every little bump it's had. The swing on the other hand, if it works it's usable :)!

S.,
Go on-line to the manufacturer and find out if the swing you have has been recalled or if there are any safety issues that you may not have heard off. Otherwise, you should not have any problems with a "pre-owned" swing.

If it works, use it - 5 years old is nothing in baby stuff age when you consider it probably only was actually used for a few months!

You can go online to most manufacturers websites and find the safety and weight limit info. for things like swings, carseats, etc.

I would totally use it. I used a hand-me-down swing that I am sure was older than 5yrs old for both my boys w/ no problems. as for the weight capacity, I would suggest looking up the brand online and seeing it you can find a weight limit on it.

Hi Stephanie,

I have a 4 year old and twins who are just about 17 months. They all used the same swing. I think as long as it has good safety straps and it is in good working order go ahead and use it. The swings really havn't changed much or had any real safety issues.

About the weight - it depends on the swing. Some say righ on them what the weight limit is - but I assume this one doesn't. Go the manufactor's web site and look what the weight limits are on their current models... that will give you an idea. Usually it is about 25 lbs.

I can relate with the hand-me-downs. I had the same question on a bassenett that I was loaned. If you do a search online using the item number (usually located somewhere on the item) you can find the current information on it. You can also usually find the users manual, or instructions on assembly etc. which should include the weight limit....enjoy those previously loved items! It's so much easier on the earth, and your pocketbook!

Hi S., if the swing is safe use it, all 3 of my babies used the same swing, and the same crib, 2 of them used the same bassent. As far as the weight, I'm not sure but it sould say somewhere on the side of the swing. J.

swing- no problem. check online like others say.

carseat- 2 things to check - no accidents and younger than 7 years old. The plastic should have an expiration date on the bottom of the seat. I used a used carseat with my first but it was from my cousin (who I trust) so I knew its history. It expired after my first son grew out of it so we got a new seat for my second son.

Weight capacity probably depends on the swing, most get used up to 1 years old so maybe 20-25lbs? I would use it, my daughter is almost 6 and I'll use the two swings from when she was a baby with our 3rd if we have another. As long as it seems to be in good shape and the straps work, I don't see why not.
