One Big Boob

I've heard from several moms and have the issue myself: I completed nursing 2 years ago, and one breast has stayed noticeably larger than the other. It makes buying bras difficult, makes me self-conscious about wearing some clothing, and occasionally gets a second look from others. Young women behind the undergarments desk in department stores have not been helpful. I know others are asymmetrical. What do you do for your breast asymmetry?

What can I do next?

Hi, I don't have any advice but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!!! One of mine is larger than the other and bras NEVER fit. I have been fitted for bras and that has not helped, I sometimes feel like a mutant!! And often times I am stuffing the big one back into the bra!! Ihas been that way for 12 years and I just laugh at it now and pretend I am the only one that notices!!

I would highly recommend a "Bravado" nursing bra. They are all I wore when I was nursing. The way they are designed, the cups have a lot of stretch to them. Each bra accommodates a range of sizes, so having 2 different sized breasts is not a problem. (I have ALWAYS had a half-cup difference between mine. Very normal.)

You can buy them online (just google) and I have seen them for sale at Peapod's in St. Paul. (Also, the lactation departments in most hospitals sell them.)

If the size difference really bothers you for now, look into getting a "falsie" to wear on the smaller size.

Also, Bravo Bras in Blaine does custom bras. I've never been there, but I've heard good things about them.

Have you talked to your physician about this? You may need to pursue it from a medical standpoint to make sure there aren't any infection, cysts, etc. going on. Better to make sure and be reassured. Might also not be as bad as you think...Good luck!

All boobs are asymmetrical - unfortunately some more than others. Mine were before nursing and really are now. Honestly, I just don't pay attention. I like the padding ideas though.

This may seem silly, though other ladies may have offered the same advice (I haven't read any other comments yet)...but have you considered gel pad inserts? They make them for women who have one or both breasts removed as a result of cancer. Though I think the 'authentic' ones are pretty expensive, you might be able to find them at places like Victoria Secrets, but I know they are out there. And if you can afford a boob job...go for it! Heck, maybe even check out E-bay for the inserts. Because of my lack of breasts, I wear gel bras with them built into the bra. I know they also make bras where you can "add" the inserts to one or both sides. Like I mentioned earlier though, I think those are pretty spendy.

I''d talk to your doctor and see if you're still producing milk on that side, despite not nursing for so long. I'd also go in for a mammogram to make sure there aren't any cysts or abnormal growths.

There is a specialty bra shop in Blaine that is by appointment only (I think the fitting fee is $15) but they will specially tailor your bras to fit your body, regardless of size. Their phone number is ###-###-####. I've heard nothing but great reviews about the shop. Hope this helps! :)

Hi J.!
NORDSTROMS! They have great and professional bra fitters. They have at least one person in the stores who is specifically trained to fit prosthetics after Breast Cancer surgery. It helps to make an appointment ahead of time if you are able, and then you have 30-60 minutes of undivided time with her if you so choose. They help make boobs look symmetrical and lovely again. Perhaps they could be of assistance in the asymmetrical areas for you!
IT IS FREE!!! But you need to pay for the products if you purchase those :)

Hope this helps!
Blessings,

I highly recommend going to Stacey's Bra and Lingerie shop. They are located off of University in West Des Moines. They have wonderul staff that will fit you personally and put your size on a card so you know what you bought the next time you go in. I have the same issue from breastfeeding and know that it is important to have a good bra. I will never go anywhere else. Hope this helps.

You probably still have milk in that breast, or are making more milk on that side ( I am not sure if you are still breast feeding). You might try to pump on that side to eliminate the milk and then pump or feed more on the other side to balance things out.

I had that problem for a few weeks because i was loosing track of which side i was supposed to feed on at night and kept offering the same side. Once i offered the other side more often everything balanced back out. Remember taht even if you stopped nursing your body will continue to produce some milk and store it for a long time. I haven't breast fed my baby in 8 months and still leak sometimes.

I would echo the other ladies, and say to go to a specialty bra shop and get measured/fitted...they wil probably fit the larger breast, and then either tailor the other cup down, OR you could get a "falsie" or silicone "cutlet" as some call them, to fill out the smaller side and make them match.

Good Luck

What do I do? I just stand in the mirror with the smaller boob facing forward and then they both look even....to me at least! Ha! Ok, that was my lame attempt at humor. You know, I'm not really sure what to do. Ever since I started breastfeeding I've really noticed it. I do have one little trick that helps a little. I shorten the strap on the one side by a good inch or two. It helps to bring the larger breast up so it's not hanging lower. Gosh, the more I talk about it the weirder it sounds. I don't know about you, but it tends to get a good laugh out of me. I'm willing to bet that people probably don't notice as much as we think they do. I mean, after all, unless they're a dirty old man type of person, they're not going to be staring at your boobs.

Best of luck. I'm glad there are enough of us "asymmetrical" types out there that we don't have to go around feeling like we're the only one in the world. ;)

Hi J.:
I was a bra fitter for Penney's for 3 years. Call Penney's and request a fitting. You can talk to the Women's department manager and ask that she set the appointment with an experienced fitter who knows her stuff. There are inserts that are meant to be push-up pads that also work as fillers. Purchase the bra that fits the larger boob and use the pads to fill up the other cup. I am sure that your budget is tight like most of us, don't be afraid to buy off the clearance rack.
If you are in the Appleton WI area send me a private message and I will tell you who to request.
