One Year Old, Crying While Diaper Being Changed.

My son is a year old in a few days, and for i'd say the past maybe two weeks, when we lay him down to change his diaper he will cry almost hysterically, and nothing will console him, not singing, toys etc. Only thing that does is holding him after he's done. Almost seems like he's in pain. He is teething pretty bad, he is getting more top teeth and I believe his molars too, but It breaks my heart to hear him crying like that.

At first it started out when we were out at a store so I thought it was because he was scared due to an unfamiliar place. But then it continued on to our home and the grandparents.

What could be causing him to do that? Pain from his ears? Or someone told me maybe acid reflux? Im pretty sure hes not just throwing a fit cause he wants to play or anything... He has a check up in a few weeks, so I will have them check his ears really well, but until then i'm stumped...

I'm hoping some of you momma's out there might have some advice, or helpful answers for me.

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies for all the responses. We are going to get his ears checked very soon again. My husband and I both have had ear tubes, and myself recently ear surgery so its a possibilty. Also like all you said he just hates being pulled away from all the fun. Thanks again!

My daughter did this at the same age. I thought ears? Wipes? Never came up with anything except distraction that worked...I would let her play with something I would normally take away...bracelet, tube of cream, etc. Singing didn't work, etc. She didn't do this at school, only at home. then she just grew out of it. If it was ears, he would cry when you lay him flat for other things. My pedi told me it was the age and part of testing their power- she also did this with dressing and putting pjs...drove me crazy, but we got through it! Hey, it also gives you a chance to see just how fast you can change a diaper!

My 13 month old will sometimes, usually when he wakes up in AM, but it is definitely because he's pissed that I'm laying him down. He will flip his little body over so fast to try to escape! With mine, it is just the age.... I usually give him his sippy of milk before I lay him down and that is usually enough of a distraction. He LOVES my cellphone, which I never let him play with, so I give that to him if we're out somewhere and I need to change him. It's worth a try I guess!

My son is doing this, too. It's gotten really bad. I'd be interested in knowing what others' experiences are as well.

Apparently he never does this for our sitter - of course.

We have his ears checked when we go to the chiropractor almost weekly and he's never issues there. Honestly, I kinda chalked it up to him not wanting to be kept from playing, etc. He's on the go and not really a huge cuddler, so when we do this I think he's just really resisting being restrained - toddler power play opportunity.

Is he pooing ok? Maybe he is constipated and it hurts, or maybe because his teething her poo is kind of acid and irritates his skin?
However let me tell you that my daughter HATES for me to changes her diapers (I am the only one that changes her diapers). I don't know why.
No poo problems, just doesn't like it. I have try to do fast, slow, quite, with a party and she just doesn't like it. She is also extremely happy when naked, lol. I have come to the conclusion that either she just does't like to be touch there or maybe she just have one of these sensory desorder thing (I forgot what it is call) because she also use to hate get her hands dirty or touch wet stuff (that is gone now and she very happy gets her hands to toe dirty).

You may have already done this, but have you checked for rashes where you are cleaning? If he's a chubby guy, there might be a rash somewhere in between folds of the skin. Because it sounds like a recent occurrence, maybe there's something going on that's bothering him.

He sounds like he's mad to be taken away from play-my Grandson did the same thing-it got so bad that my daughter changed him on a pad on the floor-it would have been easier to wrestle an alligator! Then it changed-he stopped getting mad and now will lie there like a little doll-she can even go into the bathroom and get a wash cloth and come back and he is all smiles!
Kiss his little head for me!

my son cried when laying flat on his back due to acid reflux that may be something to look into and remove from your list of options.

Some kids just hate having their diapers changed and there's nothing more to it than that.
If it's cold, you lay them down, pull off their pants, their diapers, their little tushies are bare.......
Who would love that?
I work in a maternity ward and we had a new baby that screamed her head off when her diaper got changed. Never any other time.
I said, "Oh no....Mommy's in for it."
Baby never made a peep until she got changed.
I think little kids go through different phases.
Just comfort. Get the job done.
You aren't hurting your baby.
He just doesn't like it and that's okay.
He's gotta get changed.

Best wishes.

My daughter did that. I got a wipes warmer and used warm wipes instead of cold and it helped a lot. She didn't like the cold air on her hiney either.

@sue, lol. I've done that. I've changed her backwards laying down because she was sleeping but her diapers was full and once because she just wouldn't lay on her back. Oh goodness, it's like putting on a very complicated pair of pants

Try cleaning him with a warm washcloth instead of a cold baby wipe. My grandson hated that cold on his little bum for quite a while. If your son doesn't cry other times he's laid on his back, it's probably not ears or reflux. If he does cry, then look into those possible problems.

A strange location could have been the initial problem. Sometimes a strong impression carries over into similar situations. And some babies decide they don't like being changed, or bathed, for reasons only they can comprehend. Just do your best to be quick and gentle, and he'll probably get over it eventually.

My son hated it when I would hold his legs up by his ankles when I changed him. Once I started using my arm against the backs of his legs to keep his feet up, he stopped crying during diaper changes. Hope that helps.

If it's any time that he's laying down, have his ears checked as soon as possible. If he has an ear infection, it's best to know that as soon as possible.

Try letting him play with something that you normally would not while you change him. Like your cell phone or a necklace - something you would normally take away from him. It seems like if it were some sort of pain issue, he'd have it at other times beside changing time. If he's shown no other symptoms at other times, I'd assume that he's just mad that he has to be still for another diaper change : )

I never succeeded in doing this, but some Moms told me they learned how to change their kids' diapers standing up. That seemed to eliminate the screaming.

They just do this at this age --from 9-12 months. Welcome to toddlerhood and tantrums!

Both mine did that (my 15-month old still is!). They just didn't (or don't) like it. I try to distract her by giving things to chew on or hold (tube of diaper ointment, cell phone, whatever she likes) and that might help. Sometimes nothing helps, and I have to hold her down the entire time.

Good luck! This, too, shall pass.

If he doesn't do the same kind of crying when he lays down for anything else, such as sleeping, I wouldn't think it was his ears or acid reflux. My guess is that he just doesn't like having his diaper changed. About that age I had to start changing my oldest on the floor because he would throw a fit on the changing table. I just moved as fast as possible to get it done. Good luck.
