One Year Old with Exzema

hello my daughter and I both have exzema we use unscented dove to wash with and wash all new clothes..good luck

I suffered from eczema most of my life. I tried all sorts of medications and perscription steriod creams/lotions/ointments. Finally, when I was in my mid 20's I saw a dermatologist who prescribed me Protopic. I've used it as needed for the past 5 years. It is a miracle drug and has inproved my quality of life. There is also another one called Elidel. The package insert says they are not for children under 2 yrs old, but I know some as young as 12 months that have had great luck with them. They really do work when nothing else does.

My daughter just got over her bout with eczema and she had it nearly everywhere. I used the steroid foam for 2 days and it started to clear up. However, since that's not working try hydrocortosone (which is over the counter and my pedi told me to use it)and then apply Vaseline over that in the morning and right before bed. I had my daughter wear sleep n plays 24/7 so the Vaseline didn't get everywhere (it's messy I know). I really resisted the Vaseline, trying other creams first but I finally gave in and used it and after 3 days it was nearly gone! It's now a week later and she's looking great! I've switched to putting moisturizer (either the Aveeno or Johnson & Johnson Soothing Naturals) on during the day and vaseline at night. I'm just going to keep this up to see if it works. I hope it works for you!

Make sure to lotion, lotion, lotion!! Especially after baths. I also use All free and clean laundry soap on all of our laundry.

Hi L., when my daughter was a baby we used Gentle Naturals lotion for her eczema and it helped alot. It is not a steriod cream and you can buy it at Walgreens, grocery store, Walmart..almost anywhere. My daughter is 5 now hardly ever has it anymore. Goodluck!

Hi L. - My son also has eczema, as do I, and the only thing that has helped both of us is Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash. Make sure you get the sensitive skin version, as there are a lot of Dove body washes. It definitely has helped, to the point where I don't have to use any cream on my son, and I only occasionally have to use cream on my hands. Hope that helps!

Hi! my 2 yr old was diagnosed w/ eczema when he was a newborn but recently had his first big outbreak. The back of his legs and the inside of his elbows got really raw. We used to use Aquaphor ointment and it used to work fine until his outbreak. We found out that he became allergic to it and was making his skin worse. Now, we use Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream during the day and Aveeno Overnight Itch Relief Cream and if necessary Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream. We also give him a bath with Aveeno Baby Wash. It has helped so much but it did take time. Don't use steroid creams because the body gets used it and won't be able to go back to regular creams. Hope it helps.

This sounds crazy but it works....there's a laundry BAR soap that you can find at HEB usually in the laundry soap section, it's called "Fels Naptha" and it's a brown bar. Washing with that soap stops the itching for a time anyway and dries up the blisters. I discovered it as a camp counselor for all those mosquito bitten campers. Hope it helps.

We had to use dandruff shampoo all over our daughter. Or try an anti-fungel cream. Also, Dove for sensitive skin and give her some fish oils regularly to moisturize from the inside out. Have her drink lots of water and check to make sure she does not have an allergy to products you're using in your home.

I know that topical creams can help, but the underlying problem is probably an allergy to some kind of food. If you are willing to alter your diet you can probably figure out the culprit. It may or may not be an easy thing to eliminate; a surprising number of people are allergic to the most common things in American diets, like wheat, dairy products, eggs, soy, and corn. You have already been told this but I would like to reiterate the need to investigate allergies. My son has had reactions (excema, nasal allergies, severe itching, etc.) since he was born. First don't use baby soaps or lotions; they use many harsh cleansers and frangrances. Start elimating things slowly until you find the culprit. Change your detergent and softerner to the "free" kind (no frangrances, etc.) Get mattress and pillow allergy covers (Walmart has cotton ones). Wash all bedding and towels in super hot water; if your washer has a "sanitary" setting, use it. If not, boil water on the stove and add to the wash load. Put any stuffed animals that you cannot wash in HOT water in the freezer when they are not being played with. These tips are to eliminate dust mites. I would also recommend finding a pediatric allergist. When kids are so young the tests are 100% accurate but it's better to be safe than sorry. We have our son (now 8 yrs old) tested once a year since he turned 6 before that he was tested every 6 months. Things may have changed in 8 years but I recommend "prick testing" instead of blood tests because they show how sensitive they are to each individual allergin. Don't give up; your baby is REALLY itching and I hate to see kids suffer so much if we can help them. Good luch.

Hi! My daughter is almost 2 and was diagnosed with a mild form of eczema as well. There were no lotions or creams that were the miracle cure. I liked eucerin lotion and I coat her ankles and feet at night with vaseline and then put on socks. For the itching we use benadryl only when I feel it's necessary at night. We also had her tested for allergies-just took a small vial of blood out of her arm, and we found out she was allergic to eggs which can make her eczema worse. So no eggs, zyrtec in the am and benadryl at night if necessary and we try to keep her as cool as possible. When she gets hot and sweaty it gets worse-very worse. I bath her with Dove for sensitive skin, wash her clothes in dreft and don't use anything with perfumes in it. I only dress her in comfy loose clothing. Hope this helps. I know it's frustrating-we are still dealing with it. I hate having to give her benadryl but I can't stand seeing her scratch herself until she bleeds either. All of my kids have eczema due to allergies. We also have had flair ups after swimming. What works for us is lots of slathering with aquaphore and good old vasaline. My youngest (1.5) has been sooo itchy lately, I have to cover her in vasaline and then dress her in long sleeves and long pants. This helps a lot. Also, don't be shy with this stuff. We reapply (as reccomended by the pediatrician) 2 or 3 times a day, but especially right before bed and after a bath.

Our 18 month old has really bad eczema and dry skin all over. His allergist told us about a lotion and cream called CeraVae that you can get at Walgreens. It does cost a little more than most lotions/creams, but seeing the result I will never use anything else on him. He also has to use a prescription cream daily, but have seen a significant improvement since using the CeraVae.

Hi. I actually have exzema and have had it since I was your daughter's age. The best thing to do is get a prescription for the cream they give you. If that is not an option you can always just rub any kind of cream with steriods in it. Something like an anti itch. Triple antibotic and the sort. The best thing to prevent is to not get too hot. It's irratated on me when I sweat. The chlorine could be a HUGE factor in why she has had an outbreak it in. Anything that would slighty irratate you skin could cause her to break out with a rash. Mainly just make sure she doesn't scratch it. Just makes it worse. Also lots of fluids makes it better. All it really is, is cronic dry skin. Hope I helped out. Best of luck.

Myself and my two beautiful girls are victims of excema as well. I have found that bathing wi/ baby oil works really well. for a little one i realize can be quite messy. Try creamy baby oil after bath. Also, I believe its Gerber not sure exactly what brand it is, but in the baby section of walmart there is an excema cream. It smells nice. Its really thick and a little pricy but it works really well. I use Aveeno baby bath for my youngest though on top of the creams..good luck. Its the most aggravating feeling on the planet.

Aquaphor is a miracle! Be consistant and it shoud be better in a few days.

For my son I use Eucerin Calming Creme Lotion. I have been using it for 2 years on him.
I also have gone back to using Dreft detergent for his clothes.

Hi. My son had ezcema also and when the lotions from the store didn't work she prescribed me Westcort. It is a little bit stronger than the cortizone over the counter and it worked wonders. Even now at 14 he still uses when it gets bad during swim season.

I agree with not wanting to use any more steroid cream. I have found a wonderful product call emu oil, works on a variety of things, would be worth trying and you can get it on the internet. Hope all goes well and I hope you find something to work for you.

I would try the aveeno oatmeal bath. My daughter had a really severe form of eczema and it was so frustrating for us both. She would scratch non stop and even cause herself to bleed from so much scratching. The steroid creams worked as well as all the aveeno baby products. Our pedi also prescribed an allergy medicine that she takes daily. I hope you find a fix soon!

One thing I have learned is not to use any products with a form of mineral oil in them. This is very drying and irritating to baby. Which I hate to say is more than 98% of the baby products on the store shelves. Have you heard of Arbonne products? They have an awesome baby line and the baby oil and baby wash is known to help excema. I have a sheet that explains it and what products to use. Hi L., My son is 13 mos & has had eczema since he was 3 mos. His pedi said to use Dove Sensitive body wash (Walmart carries an the Equate version which is less expensive). She also gave him a prescription lotion called Kenalog that is mixed with Lubriderm Sensitive lotion. We only use the steroid cream when he has flare ups but if we use his prescription lotion after his bath every night, he seldom has flare ups. The prescription lotion is really expensive but anytime we've tried to stop using it the eczema comes back. When he's clear we try to only use it every other night & use Lubriderm sensitive lotion every night in between. I had to get it from the pharmacist because its hard to find on the shelves. My mom has eczema & uses CeraVe lotion from CVS. Its expensive ($13/ bottle) but helps her. Good luck!!! Its been a constant battle for us.

Hi! My son too had exzema at about a year. What I found helped the best was to bathe him in Aveeno oatmeal bath. Babies "R" Us carries the Aveeno oatmeal bath for babies. This helped sooth the itch and my son was able to sleep comfortable. Hope this helps.

My sons had eczyma, so I know your frustration. We only apply the steroid cream during the first sign of outbreak, when the patch is bright red. Once it begins to tone down, we stop the steroid cream and instead apply a layer of lubriderm, then vaseline over the lubriderm 2 - 3 times a day. That dual system seemed to help trememdously. The key is constant moisturizing and we find that the vaseline protects and keeps the lotion on the area longer, instead of getting wiped off.

I know I am late here, but I am really shocked that I didn't see anyone recommend Melaleuca's Renew Skin Therapy Lotion. I got rid of eczema on my face with this lotion and it has never returned. It is the best lotion out there and has beat out Eucerin in clinical trials. It's amazing.

This is just heartbreaking to me! People think our household products must be safe if the store is selling it . . . think again! If you're using toxic laundry products on your children's clothes and then putting those clothes on their sensitive skin, in many cases, it doesn't matter what creams, lotions, ointments you're using. Not only what we absorb through our skin, but what we inhale and ingest can be harmful. Have you recently changed car seats?!

Our toddler developed eczema due to a reaction from the flame retardant chemical that the car seat cover is treated with.

The pedi dermatologist prescribed a steroid cream, which we used for a few days. We now have to be diligent about keeping his skin moist. We use soap/shampoo sparingly (like every other day or so).

Try Dermarest lotion. The same thing happened to my one-year-old, and a friend recommended it as the only thing to help both of her daughters' severe exzema. I found it at CVS and it really helps. Every time she flares up, I put some on and it is gone like magic. Good luck!

My daughter, now almost 8, was dianosed at about 8 months with exzema, i can tell you we have used everything under the sun, from steriod creams and oatmeal baths. There are two products i would recomend, first Eucerin, its expensive!, but very worth it, and its just lotion, perfect for sensitive skin(they use it in burn centers) and the other is perscription, but not steroidal, it called Sodium Hyaluronate 0.1% lotion. It works faster than the Eucerin,and it makes her normally flaky, ashy skin so very smooth! We use this over her entire body, even works great around her mouth and face, where she gets alot of break outs! Hope that helps!

Hi sweetie. I feel your pain. My husband has excema, my 8 yr. old son has excema, and I have a 3 yr. old w/severe excema. We have seen several docs/specialist/allergist.

First of all, chlorine is actually good for excema. It takes away the bacteria on her skin. Washing it off when you get home though, is a must. (I'm sure you know that) My pediatrician even suggested that I put a small amount of bleach in my daughter's bath water.

May I suggest that you see a dermatologist & try the medication "Hylira, the .2% form. A pediatrician cannot give you this strength. It is NOT a Sterioid. It is safe to use 2 - 3Xs per day. It has made a world of difference w/my little girl. Also, the BEST cream I have found is in a white jar w/a blue ____@____.com's about $4. It is their generic brand for Eucerin Cream. It says "Walgreens Therapeutic Moisturizing Cream" on the jar. IT IS EXCELLENT!!!

I have tried every kind of lotion available to man it seems like. Aveeno can work sometimes, but not when my daughter's is really acting up, because IT HAS ALCOHOL!!! this makes their poor little skin burn! Make sure to read the ingredients on everything. There are 2 types of alcohol found in Aveeno: benzyl alcohol & cetyl alcohol.

Also, hard water is bad for their skin. Keep a diary of things she eats as well, certain foods trigger outbreaks, but I haven't made the connection w/my daughter's.

Both of my kiddos (now 2 & 3) have had severe excema since they were babies. We use aveeno for the bath and put Eucerin CREAM all over their bodies. It has seemed to really work. We do use steroid cream on particular spots if needed and have a perscription cream too. We have also recently changed my daughters sheets to t-shirt sheets to help with itching at night. YOu have a lot of repsonses and I don't have time right now to read them all, so sorry, if I say something someone else has. I have 4 kids, my 2 sons ages 4 and 9 have severe eczema. My advice is to investigate online to find out all the info you can. Dairy and soy products are a big trigger for many kids. If youread labels those 2 products are in almost anything. My oldest is also affected by environmental allergies, dogs and cats. If you are not aware yellow food dye is also bad for kids with skin problems. Without going into detail right now about how many things we have tried and what has worked and not worked my advice for the moment would be tea tree oil. Put some on a cotton ball and dab it on the itchy spot. It will immediately take away the itch. You can also add a few drops to the bath water. IMO it doesn't smell great, but whatever works. Aquaphor needs to be used almost hourly when flared. After the bath, put it on while still wet. You might want to look into a probiotic supplement because digestive issues can cause eczema also. I also want to add, swimming is not bad. The chlorine will disenfect any wounds. It is important to immediately wash off after getting out of the pool and them apply aquaphor. Aquaphor or vaseline is also good to use before swimming because it will help create a barrier for the chlorine.

My daughter had eczema at 1 month old and we have been using Cetaphil cream on her (she is now 4 months) and the eczema has not returned. We also only use sensitive skin Dove bar soap on her. All of the special baby soaps are VERY drying to sensitive baby skin. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your baby's eczema. I went through the same thing 23 years ago with my son. In his case, cow's milk formula and cow's milk proteins in my breast milk were the culprits. When I stopped drinking milk myself,and switched him to soy formula, his skin cleared up completely. It stayed clear until he was a teenager, when the eczema came back. Food allergies play a huge part in eczema, as do stress and environmental factors like relative humidity. Our son's allergist recommended a moisturizer called Cerave (hard to find and fairly expensive), which helps a lot to keep his eczema at bay. Keeping the hot spots moisturized should make your baby more comfortable, too. You're right-- steroid cream should not be use often or for long periods of time. Maybe you will have to have skin tests for allergies done if the eczema persists, but in the meantime, see what limiting cow's milk does, and try Cerave. (Some CVS pharmacies have it. ) Good luck!

My pediatrician recommended Eucerin Calming Cream. Both my boys had baby eczema, but theirs never seemed to itch-- just caused tiny little bumps on their arms and legs that you couldn't really see but could feel. I'm not sure if the Eucerin would stop the itchies-- I'm sorry!

My daughter also has mild excema. I see that you have lots of advice, but I would like to add what has worked for us. Lubriderm lotion all over every night before bed and cortizone cream as needed (only in spots where needed) on top of the lotion. I do have a prescription cream when it gets worse for her, but 90-95% of the time, the Lubriderm and cortizone combination work and keep it under control. Also, I only use the Johnson's baby wash and no other kind of lotion on her, not even baby lotion. I used Dreft to wash her clothes just until last year and now I use Tide free and her skin stays pretty clear these days. It gets worse in the summer when she swims daily and sometimes in the winter when her skin dries out.
My daughter is now 5 and has had the excema since she was 6 months to a year old..

2 of my girls have mild eczema and what has helped the most (after trying every moisturizer available and recommended) has been to eliminate dairy, give fish oil supplements and keep their skin very well moisturized. The best moisturizer I have found is plain crisco vegetable shortening! It's cheap and won't hurt if they eat it! If I do all of these things I am able to keep it away. Hope you find something that will work.

my name is M. and my neice/husband both have exzema, so i know what you are going through. i went to the doctor and they perscribed antibiotics (they did not work) so i went to walmart and purchased this creme called euricine i dont know if im spelling it right but it works its a thick cream like substance and it works really well. my husband works outside in the sun and his exzema problem has really gotten alot better the bottle cose between 9-18 dollars but its well worth it.
