Opinion of Savage, MN

My family is looking to relocate to the Minneapolis area with a job transfer. I found a house in Savage I like. Is this a good area? Is Glendale Elementary a good school? What about Eagle Ridge Junior High and Prior Lake High School? Will my husband be able to get into downtown with a 30-45 minute commute? Is the park and ride system reliable?

Thanks,
S.

Hello
We moved here a little over 2 years ago. I live in Prior lake, right next to Savage. I work part time in Savage. I think it is a great area. I can honestly say that the neighborhood I live in is the neighborhood I have always dreamed of (it was very hard for me to move to a place where I knew nobody) I have a couple of friends who have children that go to Glendale and I have never heard a complaint. I think it is a little different with open class rooms or something like that. You might want to check that out to verify. I dont know anything about the middle school. I know some of the teachers at the High School and work with a couple of kids from there. I have never heard anything bad about it either. I dont know of anybody who wouldnt send their kids there. I dont know about your husbands commute. I think it depends what part of Minnespolis he is in. You can mapquest the address and it would give you an approximate time.
Coming from a big city originally (sanFrancisco) then going the opposite and living in a farm town, this is definatly a happy medium. Everything you need is fairly close.
Good Luck with your choices. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Hi S.! We moved to Savage from Texas about 1yr ago. Everyone is different so it depends on what you are looking for-
You can get alot more home for your money and you are relatively close to (20-25 min) to decent restaurants and shopping. I think the commute for your husband to downtown is going to be tedious at rush hour. My children are not in school yet, but it is my understanding that the schools are good. They don't get the recognition that some of the more affluent areas receive, such as Eden Prarie or Edina, but I believe they are just that- good. I am not familiar with the park and ride system so I can't comment on it. Savage is small with a Super Target and Lifetime and some chain restaurants that aren't really worth mentioning. They are some good parks and the people I have met are pleasant. Honestly, in hindsight I would have picked another area closer to downtown for me and my family. We enjoy more of unique setting with boutiques and neighborhood restaurants that you don't find in every strip mall. It would have met sacrificng more in a home, but at the end of the day I would give up some of the square footage to actually live in the area that I always seem to be making that 20 min. drive to get to. Remember this is only one opinion, but I wish I had known more before I moved.

Savage is a great place to live. I'm on the border of Savage/Burnsville and have a daughter in the same school district and have no complaints. Eagle Ridge J.H is a very good school. As far as getting downtown, if he bused or took 35W it's possible to get downtown in 30-45min. You can use the carpool lane if there's 2 or more passengers that helps too. Hwy169 is a parking lot during rush hour so that wouldn't be a good idea. There's a park and ride bus in Burnsville at 35W and Hwy 13. I can get downtown in 15min. with normal traffic, add rush hour it's 25min. to maybe a hour. It also depends on weather. If it's snowing it's going to take longer. My daughter's dad uses the park and ride system and loves it, very reliable and prefers that over driving.

Savage has everything you need, shopping, restaurants etc.. and if want something else it's just a hop and skip away.

Hi S.,
My family and I have lived in Savage for almost 3 years and we love it! Our children are not yet school-aged so I can't answer your question on the Savage schools. Our commute is fairly easy going North. We also leave the house early enough to advoid the majority of traffic.
