Hello Moms,

I am looking for opinions and experiences with using the nova ring or mirena. I need to get on birth control and while breastfeeding my little one I didn't want to take birth control, I am now done with that. I have only ever been on the pill, and have had some slight side effects with it in the past, but Im also wondering if that may have changed since after having kids. I'm looking for what side effects if any you had and how you liked/disliked this type of birth control.

I also want to add that I have two kids and am 99% sure that I am done. Unless I win the lotto! Lol

Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi

I did nuva ring when I was in about 22, it made me really sick and fell out, so didn't like that at all! Though it was a catalyst in finding out that I had endometreosis, so I guess I can't say it's all bad!

I had Mirena put in, March 2009, 2 months after the birth of my son. I breastfeed and it hasn't caused any issues, at least none we know of. It was painful to have inserted and bled for several days, bad cramps. I still get PMS symptoms (headache, cramps, mood swings), but my period has diminished to hardly anything and only about every 45-60 days. I will say that I am having a lot of trouble losing weight and a diminished sex drive which are both related to Mirena use. The strings have poked my husband on occasion as well. Also, after having my yearly pap, it kind of messed with things and started a regular period again, but I imagine that will diminish again after a couple months.

I won't take a pill because I stink at doing it properly and have used the patch, but that's got so much controversy surrounding it lately, I wouldn't recommend it. I've been generally happy with Mirena so far, though I always worry about the long term effects of this stuff. It's nice to not have to think about birth control at all.

My personal expierence with Mirena was not good, not to say it will be for you, but I was on it for 5 months and went to the depo while breast feeding, my reasons were, imediatly after having it placed having intercource with my partner was very painful :( , probably due to the placement as well as his.... um leangth..... I suppose that DOSE prevent pregnancy lol, as for the ring the issue I could not deal with was the constant yeast infections... but evryone is different so I hope you find something that works well for you!

I had the Nova Ring when it first came out and loved it. It was so easy and I never had any problems with it.

I hated both! The Mirena caused HORRIBLE side effects (the weight gain I am still dealing with two years later), and the Nuva Ring made me bleed for a month straight! Honestly, if you are okay with the pill, I would stick with that!

As far as I understand it you shouldn't use Nuva Ring and breastfeed at the same time. I used it after the birth of my first daughter, I got it when my daughter was 6 weeks old.. Didn't think anything of it but then noticed that my milk supply vanished.. I had hardly anything.. Didn't understand what the deal was but after a few months and I gave up on breastfeeding because I didn't have any milk left I later read that your milk supply could decrease.. Other than that I didn't like it. I felt really strange, and I know that your sexual urges diminishes after you give birth but I had absolutely none and once I got rid of it, my sexual urges returned almost to normal..

I personally would suggest copper IUD, free from hormones and you can have it in for years..
