We have had a bagless Eureka Boss for about 3 years now. It is on it's last leg and I was wondering if I could get any advise or opinions on this or other brands before I go buy a new one!

What can I do next?

I have a kenmore progressive with direct drive (the 300$ vacuum) it is beltless and uses HEPA bags. It was recommended in consumer reports as a best value! I LOOOOOOOOOVE it! It really sucks thing up but be careful I once vacuumed over the cord to my cell phone charger and it ripped it right out of the wall socket and ripped the cord off the plug in about 2 seconds. with a 6month old we needed a great vacuum and this is it!

We got the "ROBOT" for a christmas present because the rest of the siblings also have one.
You turn it on and let it do it's job and you have a clean floor all the time. It even polishes the tile floor.
It's my husbands toy and he uses it every day.
No more dirty socks!

I bought a dyson the day before I went into labor with my son who is now 17 mos old. I love it! I read a lot about the filtration system and found out that the air that comes out of it is cleaner than the air in your house. I have 3 cats and had a dog until Thanksgiving...he got very sick and had to go to heaven. Never once did my house smell after vacuuming. It is kinda gross to see all that it picks up off of the floor, but it's better in the vacuum than on the carpet. I know that they are expensive, but I know it was money well spent. Good luck!

Okay K. it looks like you already have a few good responses but let me tell you our story about vacuum cleaners. One of your respondents said to get a hoover windtunnel, this is the model we had before we made our last purchase of a dyson. I thought the windtunnel did really well but we wanted to get something that would really get our carpets clean as we were about to have a baby crawling around on the floor and we had 2 pets that shed terribly. We looked into the dyson, read all the reviews made sure there were enough places that performed warranty work on them, made sure some of the reviews were from people who had owned it more than a couple of months(we wanted to know how well it worked after a couple of years) I almost fainted when I found out the price but let me tell you it is worth every penny! It has so many features that other vacuums don't have. We took it right home and vacuumed our whole house using our hoover first. Then we turned on the dyson, we got one full canister of dirt and dog hair just in 2 rooms! Disgusting, I know. We have had our dyson now for almost 3 years and we haven't had a single problem with it, it still has amazing suction and is going strong. I hope this helps. I know that a lot of places carry them now, so do some price comparison..Linens N Things carries them and they have their 20% off coupon in the newspaper every Sunday so keep that in mind. Good Luck

Save up and get just what you want. I have a lot of friends with the Dyson vac and they love it. Read
thereviews on vacuums on Target.com.
My vacuum died at a time that I couldn't just go out and buy what I wanted and got stuck paying 200 for one that I don't care for but it will have to do for awhile.

You MUST get a Dyson vacuum! It's the best purchase I could have made. I got mine from BestBuy.com and got it for a hundred dollars less than the regular price. It does cost more than a lot of other vacuums ($400-$500), but it's AMAZING!

We absolutely LOVE our Eureka Smartvac model #4870. It's not bagless, but has a great HEPA filter which is excellent for us because of my allergies. It is a fantastic machine! Relatively economical too--I think it's available for $139 at Costco. Definitely worth the $$$.

I too swear by Dyson! One of the selling points is that the belt never needs replacing- HA! I've got teenagers who thought it would be OK to vacuum over the fringe on an area rug. Broke the belt in the bat of an eyelash. (approx 1 yr. old machine)DH called the 800 number on the machine, a technician walked him through the process of removing the bar, and then sent us a brand new beater bar and belt for FREE! They really do stand by their product and offered great service with no "misuse cancels warranty" blahblahblah you get from so many companies!

We absolutely LOVE our Rainbow!! If it's too expensive new, you could perhaps buy a refurbished one, or look in the newspaper for a used one. I can't believe the filth this vacuum picks up!!

I don't know what your cleaning needs are, but we had a bagless, and it was great at first but got progressively worse. When I went to buy a new one, I didn't want anything fancy but something that would last. The bagless one broke because something (a rock, from the ever growing collection, perhaps) broke the fan. The guy at the vacuum store recommended a RIccor. I got the cheapest model (still $250 or so) and am very happy with it. It is pretty no frills but it is well made, and all of the stuff that gets sucked up bypasses the fan, so the same thing can't happen. Also, it has a wooden roller bar which he recommended because there are 4 long haired people in our house. I thought it was kind of a lot for a no frills vacuum but I have been very pleased since. It has all the tools onboard so it is compact and light.
happy sucking!

I am having a love affair with my Dyson. It really sucks!! :-)
Seriously, it is the best vacuum that I have ever had. The fist time we used it I was appalled at the amount of dirt and dust that it sucked out of my carpet. Stuff my old vacuum would never have touched. I had a friend that got a Dyson and couldn't stop talking about it, so I finally got one, and now I can't stop talking about it. I got "The Ball." I know there are ones that are great for pet hair called "The animal." I like mine.

It is expensive but an oreck is the way to go. We have always had a dog and with all the kids we went thru vacuums like crazy. It got very annoying spending atleast 150.00 a pop. I know this is going to sound silly but one night we were watching that T.V. show WifeSwap and one of the mom's was compulsive about vacuuming her house. She vacuumed like 8 times a day...well I figured who else would know what was a good vacuum and she had an Oreck. We went out and bought one and have been very happy for going on 3 years now and it comes with a lifetime warranty and a free yearly tuneup.

I did some research before I got married (so I would know what to register for!) and went with Consumer Reports pick. My grandparents bought me the Hoover Windtunnel, and I love it! A bit pricey but so far well worth it. My Grandmother went out and bought one for herself because I couldn't say enough about it. My husband even took over the chore for a while because the vacuum has a green light and a red light to let you when you're done vacuuming an area, so it was a great toy for him for a while!

K.,
I perosnally love the Rainbow Vacuum - it is a little on the expensive side, but my husband and I run an indoor air restoration company, so I have done hours of research on having a safe and healthy home - the biggest challenge with vacuum's is that they are stirring up the dirt and collecting a portion of what they stir up - then that junk is put into either a bag or a chamber - and you have to get it out of your house - well, with a rainbow- that filtration is done through water - and it doen't loose suction - and the collection is able to hold more than any bag or chamber ever will - plus when you are not vacuuming the system acts as an air filter - eliminting the debree in the room - If you are wiling to invest - this is where I would put my money - the only downfall - is that they are sold through in home presentations - like a Kirby, so you have to be ready for a "sale" but honestly the vacuum is more than worth it. You might even be able to find one on - ebay they really hold their value and work forever!!

My Sanitaire is the best. It is an old school design, but according to the vacuum cleaner specialists at Stark's it is the most efficient design. It picks up dog hair really well and is built very tough. My good friend loves her Dyson, but they are pretty pricey. I would recommend going into Stark's. They are very knowledgeable and friendly, and can help you pick something that suits your situation. But, I am a big fan of the Sanitaires. They are used a lot in commercial settings.

I don't know if allergies are a concern for you, but I bought one called a Nilfisk because of my allergies, and it has been wonderful. It was recommended by some allergy association online. Where most vacuums spit out part of what they're picking up, this one did not. It is pricey as well, but I have been so happy with it. We have had it for a little over a year. If allergies are not a concern, this might not be as big a concern for you, but, if they are, look into the Nilfisk! Good luck!

We did a lot of research, especially with Consumer Reports, before buying a new vacuum before Alyssa was born. My hubby insisted on something with a HEPA filter. We ended up with the Hoover Windtunnel Supreme and love it! The bag itself is HEPA, so they cost a little more when you replace them. It has an indicator to let you know how full the bag is, and a cool little light that goes from red to green when your carpet is clean.

We replaced our Kirby with a Dyson--the Dyson has all of the attachments on the machine, so you don't have to go looking for what you need when you need it. The dust compartment comes off easily with the push of a button, then empties from the bottom.
The suction is amazing and it is easy to maneuver.

I would recommend the Oreck or Dyson, depending on what you want to spend. Both are alot lighter in weight and have awesome suction.
