Oral Hygiene

I am inquired about what a good oral hygiene routine would be. At this time we floss, brush and then rinse with mouthwash but I am wondering if this is a good routine. I have just found Zellies Complete Mouth Care System. If you are not familar it is mouth care routine to follow incluing first rinsing with Closys, then brushing your teeth with Crest regular toothpaste, next rinsing with listerine and then following that a rinse with Act floride rinse, and finally using Xylitol in the form of gum, mints or powder to add to water. The system states that mouthrinse is bad for your teeth because of the acid in it and it should not be a last rinse item. Then it does not mention anything about flossing. And is Xylitol something we should all be using? If you mama's have any thoughts on this system or your oral hygiene I would be intrested in hearing them so I am providing the best for my family. The site I have found is http://www.drellie.com/pdfs/The-Kissing-System/Complete-M....

What can I do next?

My two best friends are dentists and they have told me many times that there's no need to get fancy. Brush twice a day with a regular toothbrush (sonicare is better if you can afford one) and floss every day or two. Mouthwash is fine but not necessary. I can only imagine what they'd say about the complicated routine you outlined above.

This plan sounds over analyzed and would not be condusive to teaching children how to make oral care "fun"

Brush daily at least twice, floss daily and we love listerine

That is an awfully convoluted system for brushing teeth. I use the old fashioned hydrogen peroxide w/ baking soda using a sonicare toothbrush and a waterpik. If I use regular toothpaste and regular toothbrush my teeth feel yucky. I feel like I've gone to the dentist everyday with my regimen. Plus, anything with xylitol gives me an excruciating headache. Saying that, you should do whatever you feel is best and you can afford - cause with what you've stated, all of those products would get very expensive.

Anything like Xylitol makes my lips and tongue "numb", so I avoid that stuff like the plague. Your system sounds mighty complex. How about just brushing with a little baking soda plus your normal toothpaste, then flossing and rinsing with a dash of hydrogen peroxide? BS is like the tooth polish dentists use, because it's grainy, and the peroxide bubbles between your teeth and gets all the little nasty bits you knock loose with the floss?....

That's more of a program to stop rampant decay, as far as I understand it. If you do get lots of cavities, frequently, then it's a good idea to get the bacteria under control.

I agree - sounds convoluted and too much of a pain in the rear...

I use the Crest Pro-health mouth rinse.

xylitol is awesome... I don't think all that rinsing is needed, tho.. toothpaste isn't an absolute necessary either... you could just brush with xylitol gel and rinse with water....

If you're concerned about tooth decay or foul breath don't eat grain products in any form and limit processed dairy (meaning any dairy that's not raw).

best wishes!

I hate to break it to you but Xylitol, while good for oral hygiene, makes your teeth yellow over time. It's a side effect that I am no longer willing to chance! My mother had beautifully white teeth and she used xylitol toothpaste and gum and now her teeth are yellowing.

We brush twice a day, floss and use mouthwash and we are good to go! :)
