Oral Versed for Procedure

Hi! I have an 8yo. She is having an upper endoscopy. She has had one before and freaked out when they put the mask on her face for the anesthesia. We had to hold her down, it was heartbreaking. So, this time they want to give her Versed before that. I agree she needs something. You know how you hear those crazy stories about it, though. Anybody have any experiences they could share? I have left a message with her Dr. to see if there is another drug that would be better. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I can't take Versed because I beat up the dentist after he gave it to me so he could do some dental work...true story. He politely told me to leave after I woke up. He didn't do any work in my mouth nor did he charge me anything.

It effects different people in a lot of different ways. I think that it works great. I was totally out. I have no recollection of anything once I went to sleep.

I had it one other time when they did the "look around". I didn't have near as much and it was much easier.

My daughter had it before her tonsillectomy and it was a huge help.

ETA: Some people become combative - I did apparently and I used to see it when I worked in an oral surgeon's office.

Go for it! My son is 5 and has had several heart caths. He gets Versed before they take him back to help take the edge off for him and us! I was worried at first, but it really helps! Good luck to your daughter.

The versed will just help her relax and make it so he cannot remember the procedure. Administered with a reputable physician's care, she will be fine. I've had it a number of times for colonoscopies and am no worse for the wear.

I give versed every single day I'm at work. It's fairly short acting so it's perfect for procedures like endoscopy. I've never had a patient have a problem with it.

Is there a reason why you are interested in another drug? I'm just trying to figure out why another drug would be something that you WOULDN'T worry about...

Both of my kids have had Versed. Children's doctors calls it "giggle juice". It makes them compliant and relaxed. For my 2 year old who was getting his tonsils removed, they picked him up and walked with him out of the waiting room waving goodbye to me. That was a pretty good trick, too, since I was a nervous wreck and trying my hardest not to cry in front of him. With my older son, the first time he had it, the doc walked in to see how the medicine was taking effect, and my son said to him "You look like you have 2 heads!" The doc chuckled and said "The medicine is certainly working!"

My mother was given Versed before surgery and it affected her memory. She didn't remember going into surgery at all. My mother is elderly, so that might be because of her age.

I would not worry about the Versed. They obviously want her awake, and the Versed probably is their drug of choice for that.

My son had it before his tonsillectomy when he was three. It made him VERY silly but he didn't have any issues being wheeled away from Mom and Dad for the procedure.

I agree it works great. My son had to go to the hospital every week for an iv it got so tramadic for him (he was 3) so about 5 min before we got to the hospital I gave it to him. It made it much better for him. I think its very safe.
