I'm trying to find an organic or more nutritious cake (i.e. not full tons of sugar!) to make for my daughters 1st birthday. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

There's a recipe in a book called "What to Eat When You're Expecting" (It's a companion book to the "What To Expect When You're Expecting" series)
The recipe is Baby's First Birthday Cake - Google it and see if you can find it online. In fact, the book is full of great advice for eating healthy during pregnancy, nursing, for babies and toddlers and generally during the reproductive years. There are a lot of good websites on nutrition for families - try www.wholesomebabyfood.com

There's is a great cake mix that is organic. I cannot remember the name. It start with an "O" and you find it at Whole Foods for sure. it has the matching frosting available to buy separate I'm not sure how much sugar it has though. What I usually do is cut the amount of sugar in the recipe by half. Nobody will really tell and since thec ake has frosting. I also put a thin layer of frosting.

Instead of cake why don't you give her what you think is healthy? She's only turning 1. If she was turning 6 I'd say don't change things now, but if you set the tradition now she'll come to expect and enjoy what ever you decide. You can always make it look fancy, just get creative. Let me remind you, at 1 this party and "cake" is not for her, its for the adults. She has no idea what's going on, but she'll enjoy it! :)

That was really smart advice. I want to suggest that the adults need to learn a different model too. Maybe we could all do with less sugary stuff?
Anyway, there are numerous recipes out there that substitute sugar with natural sweeteners. You can use juice, honey or even applesauce. I use stevia powder to sweeten most of my food now.
Happy Birthday little one.

I think the recipe I used is the same one another poster mentioned. I used the one in "What To Expect the First Year". I also like the website she mentioned! If you don't have the What To Expect books, I'd be glad to email you the recipe if you send me a message through MamaSource. (I did a family cook book and have gotten pretty quick with typing recipes!)
A note on the cake - it tastes pretty decent, more like something you'd eat for breakfast. I put a few tablespoons of sugar in it, but I don't know if it made that much of a difference. Of course I also made "full-strength" cream cheese frosting instead of the one in the book. I wasn't sure how it would taste and wanted to coat it with something yummy for the grownups - scraped most of it off for my daughter. (And then gave her a few bites of chocolate mousse, so it's not like we were all natural!)
