I am looking to find other families who may have a child with Asperger Syndrome. Particullarly in the Shreveport area, but would love to connect with anyone no matter where you are. My son is 7 and was diagnosed when he was about 5. Anyway, I just feel a need to connect with others who have the same issues. We are having a really hard time in school this year. The tantrums have escalated for some reason.
I received some very heartfelt and wonderful responses. I was looking to connect with other families who are dealing with the same issues as we are and I have found some! Although, no one from my own area responded, I am glad to have met the ones that did. It's good to have a support network and I hope I have added to mine by contact these people. And if any of you guys need anything, remember I'm here as well. I am a graduate of Partners in Policymaking (an advocacy training program for people with disabilities and people who have children with disabilities) and I am also on the executive committee of the Northwest Louisiana Autism Chapter (part of Autism Society of America). My name is J., I live in Spring TX I have a daughter with AS that is now 17 dxd at 12. She also had a very hard time with school. I would wake her in the morning she would get ready like normal then as soon as we hit the door she would freeze ... would not go, asked her what was wrong she did not know. At times I would have to carry her out the door, carry her to the office of the school and then painfully depart, watching her everyday just scream. Finally it just got to much for both of us and her dr put her on whats called home and hospital or home bound. thats where a teacher would come to my home and teach her for 1 hour a day. this all worked out well until we moved here from CA then TX said she was not allowed to take electives at home and now put her on the work program. haahaa well now im trying to fight this battle. We have decicded to let her do her GED and take collage courses to furture her ed. anyway know that you are not alone and keep doing what you need for your son. It a battle of wits for all.

Ohhh PS With the tantrums, I have learned over the years to keep your voice even, a normal tone, even when you are mad. It seemed the more upset I get the worse she got. Also another hint that workewd for me is a calandar. Write down events of what u are going to do for the week no surprises then. He will know everything that is planned and less out bursts then. I dont know if you have read any of Tony Attwoods books or have seen him with his conventions, but he is wonderful, he helped us alot, another is Stephen Shore. I have a son who is 8 with Asperger's. He was dx at 3 (Autism/PDD) and then changed to Autism/Aspergers when he was about 4 or 5. We are in the Metairie area. I would love to keep in contact with you and anyone else going through this.

I have a step son with Auisum. not the same but close and you can find support groups on line.
I do not live in Shreveport but I am from there and I have a 14 year old with Asperger Syndrome. I will help all I can. I have been through what you are going through and some of it I am probably still going through with my son. I am living in Durant, OK right now. My son just started High School on Thursday. One of the things that we found out that helps is we have my son in counceling the councelor helps my son with individual and group counceling. The talk about behaviour and things like the tantrums. We discuss it before things like school or church and I tell him he will be rewarded with a 30 extra minutes of his game if he does not throw a tantrum and if his does no game time at all. Since the game is his favorite thing this usually works. What if your son's favorite thing? see if you can use that at a tool.

My son is 5 and is currently awaiting testing for Asperger's. I don't live in the Shreveport area, but I can sympathize with you. I have found that my son's diet has as much to do with his behavior as his environment does. When he has red dye #40 or yellow #5 or 6 he starts to act like the tasmanian devil. Certain environments also make him act out (ie crowded noisy places). I'm not sure that's the case with your son but it's a thought. Blessings and best of luck to you.
Yes! I am in Shreveport.. my son is 7 and recently diagnosed.. I was about to type almost your identical post! I'd be interested to know if you found in any help in this area as far as social skills groups, support groups, or other individuals. Also, please pass along anything that has helped with your son's tantrums, as that is our main problem too. Hope to hear from you..
