Hello ladies,
I have been battling with sensitive teeth for a long time now but I'm starting to go crazy! I've even begun putting my son's Orajel on my gums just to get through a meal. I've been using Sensodyne for months now, and my dentist assures me it's just root sensitivity. Is there anything I can do to eliminate this horrible pain?

Thanks,
S.

If the roots are exposed, would it be possible having some bonding done to cover the exposed/sensitive area up? I used to work for a dentist and he did that quite often and the patients left very happy. Just and idea...good luck to ya!

My acupuncturist recommended Siberian Ginseng when my nerves didn't settle down for months after some heavy-duty dental work. It seemed to work over just a couple of weeks. That was for traumatized nerves. If that's not your problem, it may not be as effective, but it might be worth trying.

(There are several types of Ginseng. Be sure to look specifically for Siberian.) Good luck. Sensitive teeth are not fun.

I have sensitive teeth as well. My dentist recommended Gel-Kam. It's an over the counter topical fluoride treatment. I don't use it every day, just when the sensitivity flares up. HEB has it in the pharmacy.

I have sensitive teeth also. I have found that I need to floss every day because apparently the plaque build-up makes your teeth more sensitive. If I skip even one day I notice a difference.

Also, avoid any toothpaste with tarter control. There is a chemical in it that makes your teeth more sensitive.

I know you've already had some success with the Colgate, but I wanted to add that my new dentist just gave me a prescription toothpaste for my sensitive teeth. I didn't even know they had one! It has an even higher amount of flouride in it than what you can buy over the counter, so it works even better. So if you notice that you still need a little more, ask your dentist for the prescription one. It's Colgate Denta 5000 plus.

When you have your teeth cleaned, specifically ask that they NOT clean around the roots/gums if your teeth are eroded there any at all. I went to a dentist whose practice is to have his hygeinist to 'half-clean'. It made me really angry at first (she was done in, like, 15 minutes!), but he explained that HE had this problem (sensitive teeth) and I noticed that he was right. My teeth weren't nearly as sensitive as they had been after previous cleanings elsewhere.

Sounds like you have your answer. Just wanted to add that when I asked my dentist why my teeth had become sensitive, he asked if I had been through any stress. I had divorced, bought my first home and was dealing with the renovations and had felt terribly stressed. Who knew that stress could make your teeth sensitive?!

I have what my dentist called "brush marks" on my teeth.
They say I brush too hard. I have major sensitivity around those areas too.
My daughter's orthodontist sells flouride in a tube like toothpaste. You brush, rinse, then use the flouride like toothpaste again but don't rinse. That helped. A hygenist told me once that the toothpastes for sensitive teeth actually make the problem worse.. as do those with tartar control, whitening, etc. We use original Aquafresh. Also... I don't brush the recommended length of time either. I brush until my teeth feel clean and then I floss.

What I've found out personally about my teeth is that sensitivity gets extremely worse after I eat oranges, fresh pineapple, pears, etc. I can eat apples and bananas ok but if the foods contain any acid at all they bother me.

I think it would help you to make a lot containing foods eaten and your tooth sensitivity level that day. It may be a simple diet change could help you too.

I have found that the sensitive tooth pastes that they sell in the stores actually made my teeth more sensitive. My Chiropractor recommended at tooth paste and a mouth wash by Spry. It works really good. They carry it in Natural Health stores. They also carry gum in the same brand.

Good luck.
Hope this helps.

I know someone who had lots of teeth problems and dental visits. Come to find out that if she would have been eating 1 banana (I think potassium was missing from her diet/body) a day, she would not have had those issues...maybe something to try.

I also have sensitive teeth and hot or cold foods, especially the cold, really killed me...I got so I'd have to warm up even salads in the microwave before I could eat them. The sensodyne toothpase did not help at all but I tried a few other sensitive toothpastes and the Colgate one absolutely works for me...I can eat anything again and it doesn't hurt!! So maybe you should try a different toothpaste and remember it takes a few uses before you will see any results.
