Hey Mama's
Our 11 year old would like to start a book club. I have attended 1 book club meeting in my adult life and it was boring, I am looking for ideas and activities to do when they meet up aside from just talking about the book. One idea I thought of is each person can do a small skit of thier favorite part in the book. They will plan to meet at the library and maybe have movie outings. Do you have any other ideas or experiences for a childrens book club? Can you recommend age appropriate books? Should their be any expectation from the parents of the other children?

Thanks for your time

What a great idea. maybe this would be more fun then us adults . I think I could really see this being fun. I would write out a questionire ( sp ??)
that each child fills out that will guide them to what they will talk about. I would limit it for 20 min of the discussion, 10 min for a snack, and 30 min of play or games or craft to tye it all up. Maybe every 2 weeks or once a month so it is not too much and those that read slower are not so much in a hurry.
Maybe ask the parents to really get involved as far as the behind the scenes. Picking crafts and snacks related to the book.

My daughter loves Nancy Drew, Giramino Stilton, Sleep over squad, Animal Ark are a few. They are a bit easier so maybe make it less hard to read at first and then move in to the more difficult ones.

Good luck !

check with your local library....many of them offer book clubs for various age groups....or may have resources for you.

Another option would be hitting websites like Family Fun magazine...they usually have excellent ideas too!

ooops, & one more thought: your school library may be able to help.

I think that the school librarian or your local librarian could give you lots of suggestions and also some great books to start with so the initial book would be a big success. There are probably lots of ideas that they will get in the book that they could further develop--games that were played, recipes or crafts that could be replicated, places that were mentioned in the book. They could each take a character and figure out what those characters will be like when they grow up (assuming there are kid roles in the book) When teachers do a novel unit, there is usually a teacher's guide with all types of activities to support the book. You could probably find some of these on line. What a great idea!
