Hello.....This is the best place to find advice. I'm so glad my sister in law referred me to the site. I am packing for our first away from home trip. I'm sure many people have done it sooner or later than 11 weeks. We are going to help my mom find a summer home in Door County. As a child we went up every summer so i am very excited to keep the tradtion going for Emma. Well, we are nursing so Im brining the pump etc. But, what else should I bring that you have found was a must need?

Thank you inadvance!
M.

So What Happened?

We did well:) It was a fun adventure. My mom ended up purchasing an incredible place in door county for a vacation home for our family so I am so excited. Emma did ok since she went and saw 15 properties in one day with us. It was insane!

Awww . . . what a sweet tradition to carry on!

We have done quite a bit of travel with our kids. Family is in Michigan, and so is the family summer place. I found that driving trips with a newborn (we took our first trip with my first son for a wedding when he was just a few weeks old) took forever because we had to stop and nurse so often. If you have a hand pump or power adapter for the car, bring that so that you don't have to stop quite so many times. I always sat in the back of the car when the babies were really young to keep the baby company, read books, sing songs, etc.

Once you arrive, make sure you bring all the things baby likes at home. I always took a nursing pillow and my own bed pillows - much easier to get comfortable on strange furniture. If you can bring whatever the baby sleeps in now, that seemed to work best (my second son slept in an Amby baby hammock, which was the best for travel - he slept just like at home.)

Also, especially if you have lots of family there or the walls are thin, you might consider a white noise machine that you can take along when you travel, just to block out the noises of an unfamiliar place.

Last thing - my kids seem to always get sick when we travel, so make sure to pack baby tylenol and bring your pediatrician's phone number just in case.

Love Door County! When we took our son last year he was a little older but we did fly with him at 3 months.
I agree with the other M. who said a CD of music. We took our lap top and played the music he liked to listen to when he fell asleep. Bibs, bottles, pacifiers, soap to clean soap, brushes to clean the bottles. Extra clothes. Pack and play and sheets. Maybe a favorite toy or blanket. Try to bring what the baby is familiar with. Sun screen if you are going to be outside, hat. Tylenol or motrin, just in case. Thermometer. (just in case) A case of diaper and at least 2 containers of wipes.
You could bring what you need for the road and then stop in Sturgeon Bay, I believe there is a WalMart or a Traget there and then you could stock up.
If you are going to have separate rooms maybe the monitor.
Stroller or sling.
Wash cloths and soap. Towels.
We have a portable bouncy chair that really came in handy.
Warm clothes. Door County can get cold in the fall.
Have Fun!

Where will she be sleeping? Bring a blanket or a sheet that smells familiar so she can find comfort in that. This may be overkill, but I also took the cd that we used every night to put our son to bed and followed the same routine.

When I took a trip out of town, I also took 2 more outfits than needed, extra bibs (if you use them while nursing), extra diapers, extra pajamas etc. You can always go to the store and go get more stuff, but I just packed extra in case something happened. I also didn't want to have to rush out in a panic and buy stuff.

I took my daughter by train overnight to New Orleans when she was 4 mos old. I was also nursing her and she was on stage 1 gerber. I think I over packed for the week long trip so I guess the main thing I would recommend is to bring sleepers and cute 1 piece outfits. You really just need plenty of diapers, a few toys, sleeping favorites like a toy or blanket. Make sure you have the emergency meds motrin, tylenol, etc. Also make sure you know where the nearest Dr's office is in case of an emergency while out of town. You may also want to start storing breast milk so you can put it in a cooler for the trip and give yourself a rest.
