Outing to University District

I am going to the UW Hospital for a check-up with my neurologist on Monday, and I'm going along with my mom and son. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a fun activity for my son to do around there. I'm guessing it'd need to be indoors, since the weather is expected to be very rainy and windy that day. He is 3 and a half. I appreciate any suggestions!! Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we got 6 inches of snow, then our power went out...so I am re-scheduling my appointment. I took down all of your information, and will keep it with me for the next time I go! Thank you for the suggestions!

We love UVillage, great food, shopping, and a really cute fenced in playground in the middle of the south side. I spent a lot of time there with mt three year old when I was pregnant! You can sit and relax because it's fenced in. That might only last for an hour but is still fun!

They have a lot of major chain stores but also a few independent shops that carry really fun things. And there's a ben and jerry's! :). The kids area at barnes and noble is always fun too.

There's MOHAI just east of the stadium, it's the museum of history and industry. You can look it up online to see if that's something your child would or wouldn't like.

Good luck with your appointment and have fun visiting the u district!

Hi K.,
Try the Burke museum (right on around the corner on campus - 45th and 15th). Some of it is obviously tailored to adults, but there's plenty there to occupy and entertain a 3 yr old. Happy New Year

Oh...there's tons and tons of stuff here:

If the weather's nice:
______________________
-Walking around UW Campus ...there's not only a giant fountain, there are tons and tons of stairs and small hills to run up and down, and low trees to climb, and cool building to look at.

- Magnusun Park ...It's HUGE, it used to be Sand Pointe Naval Station, and is just down the street from Childrens', about a 5 minute drive from the UW medical center. There are hills designated for kite flying, a great playground, an off leash dog park(if you happen to be bringing a dog with the 3 of you), and it's on Lake Washington...which is key because I have yet to meet a three year old who DOESN'T like throwing rocks in the water or playing in the sand.

- Ravenna Park...on 25th, closer to the UWMC and smaller. Decent play structure, great field, good walking paths.

If the weather isn't
______________________

- University Village...It's got four or 5 kid friendly restaurants (including a rotating sushi bar with cooked food as well as raw), many many fun fountains (like frogs spitting water), a couple of covered playgrounds, a "paint your own pottery" kind of place, etc., etc.

- Indoor Inflatable Playground at Magnuson Park

oops..have to run...i may update this later

Good Luck!!!

I second u-village for their covered play ground.

Another idea is the Burke museum:

This is just a walk up through campus (can be a pretty walk). The museum isn't designed for little kids in particular, but it might be quite interesting and new.

If your son likes boats and animals it will be quite easy to walk out the back of the building and get to the ship canal water, where you can watch boats and ducks and things like that.

The Burke Museum is a great place for kids, it is on the North end of the campus. the Museum Of History And Industry (MOHAI) is close by just south of UW med center across the ship canal bridge.

Down the street from UW Hospital is University Village which is a pretty big shopping area. It's an outside -designed mall but there are lots of kid friendly places to go. There are kid-friendly restaurants and a little under cover play area. Her'e their website for further info: http://www.uvillage.com/

For toddlers there aren't many indoor activities in the U District. Having spent some time in the neurosurgery dept at UWMC I would suggest that you pack a bag of coloring books and crayons, story book or his favorite toys for him and Grandma to play with. Waiting rooms are generous, cafeteria is big... grab a table by the window and let him eat and play. On the way back home, stop by the Children's Museum at Seattle Center or go to the waterfront to the Seattle Aquarium. I wish you well with your dr's appt. Happy, Healthy New Year!!!
