Hi Ladies-
I am curious if anyone has had success with over the counter ovulation predictors. I used one last month and it showed I never ovulated?? I assume I used it improperly or bought too cheap of a brand. Can anyone offer some advice on how to get accurate results or a brand that you have had success with? Also I have heard some information on foods that can increase your fertility and was curious if anyone can expand on this. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I used a saliva ovulation predictor. You basically lick a little slide and then look at the slide to see the patterns in the saliva. It worked for me.

I don't really think it matters what brand you buy...all the same chemistry makes them work.
You just might have timed it wrong. Sometimes women ovulate much earlier or later than the 14 day mark. You might want to buy 2 kits and start right after you period ends, and for a longer period. Hopefully you will catch ovulation day, then you will know for next time what part of your cycle you ovulate on. Do you have a pretty regular cycle? That will help in predicting as well....if you don't, it will make it more tough. A great website to help out (that my doc recommend to me): www.fertilityfriend.com
For me, I am VERY regular. Period every 27 days. And my period only lasts 2-3 days. I would ovulate right on day 13 or 14. But I did discover that I didn't ovulate every month. I would also get pains in my side about 24 hours prior to ovulation (like my own little alarm!!). It would switch sides every month and everything! We discovered that if I didn't have the pain....I didn't ovulate.
Good luck! Just keep trying and it will happen! If finally did for us after 10 months!

I had the complete opposite issue with the over-the-counter ovulation predictors...it told me I was ovulating every day, which I knew wasn't the case. With my first child, I took fertility drugs (lowest dose for 5 days and then I got pregnant!) because my doctor said he thought I wasn't ovulating. Since my son, my cycles have become more regular, but I am still have problems conceiving on my own. I am guessing I may have to try the drugs again. My doctor explained that sometimes your ovaries just need a "jump start." I also have heard that every month you alternate which ovary releases the egg, so maybe the month you took the test that ovary didn't release an egg. Sorry if this is not any help. If you do come across an ovulation kit you are pleased with, please pass it along!

I'd advise getting the one they sell behind the pharmacy counter called Clearblue easy. Works like a charm! It's pricey, so I always bought one on ebay and then resold it. There are always tons of them listed. Just a thought!

I used over the counter ovulation predictor tests when trying to conceive my first child because we had tried for 6 months with no luck. I conceived on the second try using the tests! Sad to say I miscarried at 7 weeks. But using the tests we conceived a second time after only 2 more months! They worked for us! I do not remember the brand name of the tests I used, but I went to Walmart and bought the cheapest test available.

Don't assume that you used the test you bought improperly. You may not actually ovulate EVERY month... keep trying :)

The funny thing is.. the ones at the dollar store are the same as the ones at the main store!!!

Why fork out all that money...

They work!!!!!!

I was on depo and I went through a TON getting my cycles back and so did a ton of other women..

The dollar store was our friends...

Cuz they work.. many MAIN brands did not work and the dollar store did..

And you dont have to feel bad if you use them like mad!! ahahah as we did!!!!!

Hi K.,

When I was trying to get pregnant with my second child, I used the cheap ovulation sticks and they were accurate. They showed that I, too, was not ovulating which was confirmed by my MD. They put on some progesterone to get my period going on track and then I took clomid x 1 month to start me ovulating, and now I have 2 beautiful little girls. My MD told me that I just needed to "reset" my body's cycle after my first baby. They are 23 months a part. I certainly would not invest in the ovulation machine until you see your MD to see if you are or are not ovulating. Good Luck!!!

I used generic store brand predictors to get pregnant both times. My cycles were very irregular though, so I tested every day as soon as my period ended until I got a positive result. It's a little more expensive that way, but if you do not have a very regular cycle, you may not be able to pinpoint the days you need to test. One cycle I never did get a positive so apparently did not ovulate. It took me 3 cycles with positive results to get pregnant with each child. You may want to try testing for longer than the 5-7 days per kit. Good luck!

I am not sure if you used a 7 day kit, but they do make a 28 day kit. Not all women ovulate around day 14 in a cycle, and with only 7 sticks you are pretty much guessing when it could be. I ovulated about 7 days before my period, so for 3 months we were way off. Once we figured it out we got pregnant right away! Good luck.

Hi K.- I used Clear Blue Easy and it did appear to work, however I didn't always ovulate either, or else the line wasn't real dark so it was hard to tell. Of course I was no spring chicken when I tried them and had other problems, so that may be the issue too!

Good luck!

I went on babyhopes.com and bought the strips that you urinate on. They have worked twice for me. I didn't ovulate on the 14th day. The first time it was the 17th day and the second time it was the 23rd day. These were relatively inexpensive.

I used a cheap brand and it worked. This was at the advice of a fertility specialist. You may need to consult your GYN or a specialist.

Good Luck!
