Ovulation and Milk Supply

Have any breastfeeding moms noticed that their milk supply drops during the few days surrounding ovulation? I feel like I'm noticing that pattern (and will feel less panicky each month if it truly IS a pattern that I can predict!) I pump while I'm at work and have gotten significantly less output both this month and last right around the times that I've noticed some of my ovulation "signals." The strange thing for me is that I'm taking the mini pill, so I though that I wasn't supposed to be ovulating, but the body signs are there and the timing is right. Just wondering!

Thanks!

Take a Calcium/Magnesium supplement, it will help. The link above at KellyMom.com will tell you how much and when to take it. I don't know what to say about the mini-pill, but if you are worried you are ovulating when taking it, I'd use another method of BC :) Call your doctor and they should be able to run some tests to see if you are ovulating.

My lactation consultant told me that it is common for your milk supply to drop while on your period. Mine always dropped right before. I started getting my period at 7 weeks postpartum so every few weeks I had panicky moments. I would put in a call to a lactation consultant and ask. It makes sense that it could drop at ovulation too, since it is hormone related. But since my experience was a lower supply at the opposite time, I would call a lactation consultant or a La Leche League person.

i think my milk supply is highest at ovulatin and lowest just before my period.

although with the pill things would be different for you.

Milk production suppresses ovulation, so it's not surprising that they are correlated but the causation link doesn't work the way you are thinking. I don't know what effect the minipill has on lactation, but the solution to supply problems is to increase the pumping frequency immediately to see if you can't coax the level back up.
