today is the 7th day (in a row obviously) that i have gotten a positive result from an ovulation test. this is the first time that i have used a kit and although i know i followed the directions fully, i was just wondering if this is normal. i thought that ovulation only lasts for a few days. i didn't start ovulating until 18 days after the first day of my period so maybe it's just that my cycle does not follow the norm?? i don't know, just looking to see if anyone had similar experience. Thank

What can I do next?

I had that problem, too and the doctor told me to test the second morning urine, not as soon as you get up in the morning, as it can give a false positive with some people. I also went to a fertility clinic and the doctor there told me to test between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. for best results. Also, yes, once you ovulate the egg is only fertile for 24 - 48 hours. So, if you want to get pregnant, after you get a positive result have sex the next day, not the same day. However, look up "natural family planning" or Billingsley Method. Your cervical mucus is the best indicator of your most fertile days. Good luck!

First you should know they don't work for everyone. As for the norm if you are referring to the 28 day cycle that is just an average. The norm actually falls between 26 days to 34 days and even then individuals can still have plus/minus days in that norm.
Me I tend to be have a 34 day cycle and O on day 19 of that. I'm also one of the ones that OPKs don't work for. I found out not only from one dr but my chart for the cycle I got pregnant with my second son. My OPKs weren't showing accurately but my chart was. I even had a different dr try and tell me OPKs work for everyone and that I just wasn't Oing. I laughed and pointed to my youngest son(2 at the time) and said "then how in the world did he get here? I was charting and using OPKs the cycle I got pregnant with him and the OPKs didn't show what they were suppose to but my chart did." That was the last time I went to that dr cause he then went on to say I was using the OPKs wrong.
If you haven't already read the book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility.

OPKs have 2 lines at all times. They are not like a pregnancy test. It is only when the test line is darker than the control line that you are actually ovulating. You should only get a positive result for 1 or 2 days, then you will ovulate and the test will be negative again. Here is a link to a good picture example I quickly found online. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=OPKs+positive+picture...

One other thing that you may not be aware of that I think they just recently figured out. Is that some women actually can ovulate more than once a month

The way to read ovulations tests is by the darkness of the test line. Some women produce the LH hormone all month long, so you might see some kind of line every day that you test. Your LH surge is impending when the test line is DARKER than the base line on the test.
Check out www.peeonastick.com for more info and for pictures of positive and negative tests. It's a very helpful site.

The test checks hormone levels which come and then stick around. When you first get a positive, then the hormone is there-and unless you have too much money, don't keep taking the test since they are very expensive!
If you have specific questions, I suggest you call your ob/gyn, ask the nurse if you don't feel like talking to the Dr and I think that most of the tests come with a 1-800 # so you can call that with questions.
The reason I know this is that I asked my Dr (this was many years ago) and she was extremely condescending to me and basically told that I was being so stupid. Needless to say, I never went back to her!
Good luck-

i had the opposite effect you did. i had absolutely no positive result even though i knew i was ovulating and my DS is here to prove it. i am not a fan of ovulation tests, they are obviously not reliable very often in my opinion. i agree with motherofone who said the cervical mucous is the best way, worked for me.
