Pacific Rim Movie - Would You Go with Your Preschooler?

Our friends have planned for this movie for sunday. They are all going with their kids , 5 kids in total - two 3 yr olds,4 yr old, 6 yr old and 10 yr old. I have a 3 year old. This will be his first movie on IMAX.
My husband really wants to go, I am interested too. But I am not sure if it's going to be too loud and violent for my son. I read reviews but want to hear from you moms, what do you think?? If I stay back, I will have to offer to take care of other little kids(I have done it before many times), but somehow been a super busy week and not up for baby sitting, so I am more inclined to just going for the movie if it's ok for my son...
Thanks moms.

I do not think I would take a kiddo that age.

I had my first experience with an IMAX movie as an adult...and it was pretty intense.

I briefly looked at the content/reviews of the movie...and that makes M. suggest not taking a 3 year old just based on that alone...

Maybe I am just an 'old fart'...lol...but that's MY opinion!

NO!! IMAX is intense for regular movies - this one is filled with crazy huge monsters - I'd maybe take the 10 year old, that's it.

No! A regular movie like Night at the Museam is scary for a 3 yr old on IMax, much less anything like that!

It's rated PG-13, so of course it's not appropriate for a 3 yr old! On the other hand, if I paid to go to a movie like this and there was a group with this many young children, I'd be pretty annoyed. Despite the content not being for young children, there's no way that many little ones are going to be quiet for a movie that long (2hr 11 min, plus at least 30 minutes of previews, according to a quick google search). Do the considerate thing and keep the kids at home.

Reviews shouldn't matter. It's PG13, and your child is THREE. 10 years under the 13 recommendation. They have ratings for a reason, and they are usually very lenient. NOT okay. This movie, is clearly an adult movie.

IMAX can be overwhelming, but I absolutely wouldn't take kids that young to a PG13

It is PG13.

However, I suspect from the commercials that it will be loud and overwhelming, especially in IMAX. I would not take a child younger than 10. The film was done by the same people that did Pan's Labyrinth so I expect the detail to be very realistic. I think it will be a waste of money and you'd be better off getting a sitter or waiting til you could get one. My DD is 4 and no way would she go.

One of my peeves, frankly, is parents who take their kids to inappropriate movies. You don't HAVE to offer anything. Your choice to go to the movie, or not, is entirely up to you and you can offer to watch the other kids IF you want to. My friends going somewhere doesn't obligate M. to watch their kids.

This is a time to get a sitter so you and your husband can go.

But your 3 year old, would not do well.. That huge screen, the tremendous sound.. And the length of the movie, would overwhelm your child.

I think any movie of any duration beyond 20 minutes is way too much for most 3 year olds, and IMAX is very intense even for 10 year olds. I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on the specifics. I'm not sure I'd spend the moey to take a bunch of little kids to something that may terrify them! I also don't know why, if you stay home with your child, you have to babysit for other kids. Does that mean they have other kids they are not taking, and they've hired sitters, but if you're not going, you have to fill in? That doesn't sound right to M.! Just beg off - you're too tired, you don't think it's a good first movie experience for your 3 year old, and you don't want to take the chance until he's seen some other regular movies to see how he fares. Period. Don't get forced into something your gut tells you isn't right for your child.

Good gosh, no. It would be too violent on the big screen, much less the IMAX.

Your friends show very poor judgment. Don't be like them.

Not IMAX. Those screens are huge and intense. If there's another movie there that suits the 3-4 year olds, do that with them while hubby does Pacific Rim with the older ones.

Children are only children for so long. They will have the rest of their lives to see adult movies. This one is rated PG13 - clearly recommended for ages 13 and up. That should probably give you the answer you're looking for. That said, my kids are 7 years old and under and primarily only watch G rated movies. Every now and then, I'll screen a PG movie for my 7 year old, but I think it's important to keep their innocence as long as possible. Childhood is a fleeting time in their lives - treasure it!

We took four kids ranging from 2.5-5.5 to see an Imax about the life cycle of butterflies. Two of the kids were terrified at various points when there were close up shots of the butterflies and it looked like Mothra. This was strictly G content. I would say no way, especially because you are questioning it. I know there are some moms on here that take their kiddos to scary movies. That is their choice, and they are confident enough in that choice not to post questions like this. If you are questioning whether it is appropriate, it probably is not.

There's no way in the world I would take my six year old. If I absolutely had to see it, I'd get a babysitter.I certainly wouldn't make my kid see it just because I didn't want to babysit. Guillermo del Toro has created movies so disturbing that some of my adult friends had a hard time watching it, and the movie is pg-13. (Commonsense Media says it's appropriate for 12 year olds and older.) Think about it....better a night of babysitting than to force a child to endure something that will likely give nightmares. Or just go see something more child-appropriate.

It will freak your son out. Let him stay home. Get a sitter and enjoy the evening with your friends and husband, but let the 3 year old opt out :)

It's going to be loud, intense, with lots of flashing lights and crashes. Not the best content for such a young audience. Sure, he'll probably not have a clue about what's going on, but then again maybe he will. My sister saw ET at the age of 3 and she is still terrified of aliens (she's 25 now). If I'm right, Pacific Rim is about a giant alien invasion. Best not to scar him for life ;)

No, I wouldn't and especially not for a first movie. I think IMAX could be freaky for that age as well. I took my three year old to see Superman, and while he liked it, he did get pretty bored bc well he is 3. I wouldn't consider an IMAX showing though.

Sorry - but there's NO WAY i would take anyone under the age of 10 to see that movie.

IMAX is a like 2,000 square foot screen. it will be IN YOUR FACE. It will be loud.

Kids in mind says this about it:
http://www.kids-in-mind.com/

here's what commonsense says about it
http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/pacific-rim

They wouldn't take anyone under 12 to see it.

Get a babysitter. Suggest another movie. That's not a young kid movie, in my book.

If you want to see it, get a sitter and go, your kid will probably find it scary (I bet your friends' kids will too.)
And you don't "have" to babysit, just because you've done it before. Don't be a doormat, real friends shouldn't expect you to babysit for them if you decide to stay home, that's ridiculous!

A 3 year old doesn't always have an attention span for an age-friendly movie @ a theatre. This movie will have a lot of action, fast scene changes, loud noises, & unrelatable material for someone so young.

Chances are you will spend most of the movie worrying about your son, & not enjoying the show!

If you decide to opt out, DON'T offer or accept watching everyone else's kids. You have the week ahead that you need to be on your game for, as a M., employee & wife. Don't wipe yourself out just because people think you are now available to watch the child they would otherwise have taken to the movie.

Maybe you could find a sitter to watch him just during the movie - take him to a nearby playground & meet you back @ the theatre... maybe the "payment" would be a movie for them w/popcorn following your show!

I appreciate that you are putting your son's well-being first, & not just taking him because "everyone else is doing it". I can't imagine the other young kids will do well with the movie, & as someone who doesn't go to movies with kids, I would hate to be in the same theatre as all of them! (Despicable M., different story, the kids added to the fun!)

Hope things all work out for the best for you & your son/family! T.

It ruins the movie for the other paying patrons for parents to do this just because mom and dad are desperate for a movie. Your friends can tag team it, where dad goes alone or with a friend while mom watches the kids and mom goes alone or with a friend to a different show while dad is with the kids. We did it all the time when our kid was young. We still do it for movies that are not appropriate for her and she is TWELVE.

You already know this is a lousy idea, so don't second-guess your good instincts. Let your husband go with these friends (and let him be the one distracted and in the end irritated by the kids) while you are with your child. Then tell him later that you are going out to see it while he stays with your son. Period. Your friends are not thinking. Oh, and for the absolute fortune they will pay for tickets for their five kids, they could have hired a babysitter.

Not a chance.

If you and your husband want to see it, get a sitter for your 3 year old. His innocence isn't worth sacrificing.

When in doubt, a great resource to check is Common Sense Media, which reviews movies, games, etc. for the age appropriateness of content. http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/pacific-rim
