I walk my older boys to school each day, but this morning my 2 year old who likes to walk with them, kept saying ow and putting his hands to his hips, and asked to be carried most of the way. This is way out of character and I am not sure what to think. Hard to get a 2 year old to "help" with explaining his symptoms! Any ideas?

Take him to the doctor right away. You never know when it could mean something serious, especially if this is out of character.

It could be growing pains. I've heard that sometimes it's very painful when they're growing.

Hi W.,

Is there any reason he could be sore, like a recent game or hike or something?

If this persists I recommend you go see your pediatrician. My younger sister had an issue with her hip when she was little that required her to keep all weight off of it for an extended period of time. It's important to rule out any real physical problems like that, and your doctor is the best to help there.

Good luck.

First, if the pain is concurrently in both hips/legs, then could just be "growing pains." Second, however, you should take him to the doctor because there is a type of infection that settles in the hip joint that I believed is called "toxic synovitis" (granted, I believe this infection typically occurs in one leg at a time). In October, my then-almost 2 year old son complained of leg pain in one leg and coupled with a high 104 fever (he had been sick with a cold during the prior week), we took him to our local emergency room (of course, it was a weekend). After about 6 hours of blood tests, xray, ultrasound, the doctors found elevated counts of some indicators for infection, but luckily nothing in the hip joint. Thus, although it ended up being fine, we were advised that this was the correct action for this type of ache (in 2 yr old boy who at that age would not "fake" an injury).

Please take him to the Dr. On Monday that show, "The Doctors" they said that pain in the hip is a reason to take your child to the doctor. You can probably look it up on their site. They mentioned a bacteria in the hip...I honestly half listened. They said hip pain and lacerations are a FOR SURE doctor visit! : ( good luck.

You should take him to the doctor. This happened to my son. Actually I heard him say it once but kind of ignored it. In that same week him and his dad were play wrestling all of sudden my son started crying saying his leg hurt. They stopped playing and I massaged his hip and leg. By the end of that first week he was dragging his left leg because his hip hurt that much. I rushed him to the e-room and after xrays, mri's drs concluded he has Legg-Calve Perthese disease. Boys of his age get this because of loss blood flow to their hips. They do outgrow of it eventually by the time they are 6 or 7 after much pain and limping around but they have to be monitored by an orthopedic surgeon. My sons pain comes and goes when he was first diagnosed it killed us but he manages well. Sometimes you would never he limps. Early diagnosis is key. My son was 4 when he was first diagnosed he is now 5. Hey but you never know maybe nothing is wrong with your son, hopefully there isnt but I hope my information helps you a bit.

I would advise a doctor visit. Also consider a pediatric chiropractor taking a look at him. Due to the physical stresses of being a little boy, mis-alignment in the spine and hips is definitely a possibility!

My 7yr old was complaining her hip hurt about a month ago. I took her to the doctor and they checked her out. They did not see anything abnormal, so she just sent us home, and were to come back if she got a fever or the pain continued. Sometimes you can get an infection in the bone, or maybe growing pains. She ended up being fine, so I think maybe she pulled a muscle.

Make a doctor appointment and have it checked out.

I'd check with the doctor, but I'd also suggest making sure your little one is getting enough calcium and potassium.
