Painful Letdown

I have been nursing my five week old as well as supplementing him. I did not want to use formula however as a preemie the doctor insisted. In any case, for the last week I have been nursing more often than giving formula as I hope to wean him from it eventually. I have a very painful letdown when he is nursing but not when pumping. Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks so much for any advice.

I am editing to add that I am not considering pumping rather than nursing, just making a note that it isn't painful while pumping. Thanks so much for the help!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

Congratulations on your new baby boy. I think the pain may be caused by a bad latch. Have you contacted the La Leche League? The leaders are more knowledgeable about breastfeeding then doctors & pediatricians. And the best thing is it's free! Here's the link: http://www.lalecheleague.org/leaderinfo.html

Here's a link that describes a good latch:

As far as cutting out the formula, keep nursing as much as possible. Adding more nursing sessions is the best way to increase your supply.

Hi A.,

I remember having pain for a brief period when my son was about two or three months old (maybe sooner), but women's breasts are constantly changing to fit the demand of the baby (which is always changing) and this is sometimes painful. I'd do some research before switching over to pumping. I have even heard that the baby's siliva triggers a change in nutrients in breastmilk, to accomodate the growth of the child. If that makes sense. To be honest, the pain shouldn't last long. If you hold tight for a little while longer, it might be better for the both of you! :) Good Luck!

I remember having the same problem with all 4 of my kids. My first 3 I only nursed for about 2-3 months and always experienced it. My 4th I nursed until just over a year old and it did get better. The only time I remember it hurting for the last 8 months was if I had gone to long between feedings. Good luck and don't give up!

Hi,

If the pain is with letdown it could be thrush. Do you have any pain after feeding?

Hi A.,
I'm not sure where you live, but I would recommend contacting Baby Beloved, inc in Grand Rapids ###-###-####. They are a great resource. They also have classes advertised including infant massage. That would be great for you and your son. It has proven to help with weight gain, etc, etc. Best of luck to you and your family.

Your son is probably latching on improperly. Most hospitals now have a lactation consultant in the OB ward. Give them a call and I am sure she would be happy to assist you in making sure he is latching on correctly! Try not to give up. I nursed my son for 10 months and he has been so healthy! Hope you have some good luck with it! Debbie

Hi A.,

First let me say CONGRATS to you for nursing your baby! I have nursed my 3 chidren for 9 months and I am so happy I did. They never got sick and slept through the night at 1 1/2 months.. Plus, they were always happy and content. As far as you getting painful letdown I know how you feel and let me tell you it will get better. I used to get the painful letdown also, but I just kept nursing and it indeed got easier and less painful. Also, if your nipples get sore put on some lanolin lotion on after feedings.. It works great!! Best of luck to you!
