Pap Smear Test Result

Does anyone know what does 'irregular' pap results or 'irregular cells' mean twice in a row? I am being asked to repeat in another 3 months but I just had two done in the last 6 months. I googled and I get, well, not nice results. Any ideas? Would I have other symptoms if something serious is going on?
Thanks

What can I do next?

HPV can be pre-c/cancerous... or not. apparently there's many kinds and i have known others that were told to wait. i had to get cryo done yrs back. either way it can be helped if its being watched. just ask more questions

If you had two abnormal then you should have them do a biopsy. Then you will know for sure if something is wrong, they shouldn't make you wait another 3 months. many people get abnormal cells that clear up after their next test. I had two abnormal then a biopsy the 2nd time but it came back normal, then finally a normal pap-test. If they do find something they will probably just do a cryo method or freezing off the irregular cells. Don't stress, just go back for the follow-up. Good luck!

I had an irregular pap a few years ago. Atypical squamus cells. They are proabably going to test you for the HPV or human papiloma virus. If they get a postitive result they will remove them with cryosurgury. I had it done and have clear pap results ever since. Prior to that I didn't have any symptoms of anything.

This is very common and there is other tests that you can do! Ask for specifics and if this doctor is not willing get another GYN. No - you would not have other symptoms. How are you HPV levels? What does irregular mean? That is not enough information for me - I would get as much information as you can! Be careful what you read on the internet - you do not have enough info to be reading in between the lines. You are going to freak yourself out. If looking at the interent read a good site like mayo clinics site the gives you good basic infomation, questions to ask your doctor etc....

My papsmears went from normal to something they called "severe dysplasia" twice, 10 years apart. My doctor at the time called it "cancer in situ" meaning it is cancer of the uterine mouth but it has stayed in one site or location. Both times to confirm the papsmear results they did a colposcopy where they take something like a large tweezers and pinch a few cells from the mouth of the uterus to look at under a microscope. To cure the first one (1989) they did a cone biopsy where they removed a piece of the mouth of the uterus that is cone shaped. The second time (1999) they did a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) where they removed the cells with almost like a heated wire I think. You can google LEEP and get more details. Both times recovery was easy, although the true surgery in 89 took a bit longer. Both times my papsmears were normal afterwards but I did have to get them quarterly for a year, then every 6 months the next year, then back to yearly. The only reason to continue on the path your doctor suggest might be that pap smears can have false positives??? Even so I would ask for more aggressive care and get these pre-cancerous cells confirmed and then removed.

mine were irregular for 4 years, and finally I just got a regular one. They kept an eye on it, and it didnt get worse, and it eventually corrected itself.

i didn't read the other posts, but i would make sure you follow through. If the found irregular cells (not to scare you) they could be checking for cancerous cells...if they found something they are concerned about they want to keep an eye on it. ask your dr what they are finding. They may be uncertain and therefore hesitant to tell you (don't want to unnecessarily alarm you, but attention is needed) but they have to give you something if you insist.
