Parent Newsletter for school....need Content Ideas (Organization/school Tips)

I work on a newsletter for a school district with another mom. The newsletter is mostly to discuss larger topics like testing, and to give parents some helpful information. Last year we had a section that highlighted a community resource (library, BG Club, science museum, etc.). We also put in important district dates and local events. Each school in the district either puts out its own newsletter for specific school events or posts them on their website. This goes to all parents in te district....preschoolers to high schoolers.

I was thinking of getting started on the first newsletter now.....for a very early September edition. School starts here mid August.

What are some topics you would enjoy reading about? I was thinking of doing some household tips to getting organized for the school year?? Something light and easy to read. Nothing too serious as I imagine many parents will be overwhelmed with the start of the year.

Content ideas??? Tips (household or school related) you wish another parent would have passed on to you??

What are other content ideas you would enjoy reading about through the year??

THANKS!!!

So What Happened?

To help clarify, this district covers 7 different schools. I can't put every date on the calendar or be super specific about each school's policies....only district wide ones. So my content has to be useful to all, but not too specific to one school.

If I were new to a school, I'd like to know about groundrules -
are there any food restrictions (no peanuts at all for instance).
how are birthdays handled.
what about permission slips.
what about extended absences.

a gentle reminder about "unauthorized absences" and the consequences thereof would also be appreciated.

a section with phone numbers, including the teacher, certain administrators, support staff, district personnel, bus contacts, PTO contacts, grade specific contacts would be good.

A link or a calendar of free or low cost community events for kids categorized by ages would be useful too.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

I'm always seeing questions on mamapedia about what to pack for lunch, so I would recommend including lunch ideas.

Other thoughts -
-books suggestions by age or grade ranges
-volunteer opportunities
-list events and dates for specific schools that can pertain to other schools, for example... concerts, sporting events, book fairs, etc.
-FAQ - what do I do if my child is absent?, who do I contact if there's a problem on the bus?, what happens if my child forgets his lunch money?
-safety tips or children coming home to an empty house
-after school programs and/or daycare resources

I would not include household tips unless they are directly related to school.

Laurie A touched on a lot of what our newsletters go over. Ours also lists dates & what might be going on (brownie meetings, after school classes/clubs), a word of the week, etc.

And reminders about parking, child pick up and drop off, and anything important. Any helpful tips are always appreciated! :)
