I am planning a birthday party for my soon to be 1 year old daughter and niece. I am also planning a baby shower as well. I was hoping to get some ideas about fun games and ideas to make these parties fun and unique. There will mostly be adults and a few young kids.

a couple of games that were played at my babyshower were to get a tray of baby things have the mother walk out with the tray and ask the geasts to remember everything on the tray then have the mother walk in the other room and ask questions about her like what color shirt she is waring is she waring shoes then have them write as many of the items that they could remember from the tray it really throughs them off. Another is to get a bank and ask everyone to put there loose change in it and after they are done have everyone right down how much is in it tell them whoever get the closest get all. give the closest all landry soap and the money goes to the mother. One last one is a bowl of rice with small safty pins blindfold the geasts one at a time give them about one minute to find as many safty pins as possible. Have fun.

I do not have many ideas for the birthday parties but some great ones for the shower are:
*the dirty diaper game ( melt different mini candy bars in the diapers and pass them around and the guest need to guess the different bars are...)
*To the new mommy- have each guest write down one piece of advice to the new mommy and put them all together in a nice album.
*how much is.......... fill a basket full of baby supplies ( diapers, wipes, bottles, blankets) Each guest is to guess how much they think each thing is or you can you just guess how much the all basket cost. This is a fun and scary one to do...
Good luck and have fun

Hi S.,

This is H., a 27 year old mom of 1 little boy. He just turned 1 yr 3 months ago and I had a huge blow out party for him. As you will have attending, I also had many adults and about 10 kids total, daycare buddies of his that range from ages of 6 mos. to 7 yrs. old.

I did a circus theme with Jo Jo the Clown, and a real clown as well, and everyone loved it. I incorporated 2 tents (kind that that you place over a camping table) and underneath each set up 2 of those dinner tray stands that are used to eat while sitting on the couch, I think you know which ones I'm talking about. Well I had 4 games with tickets and all. The games were asf:
1) Pick a Lollipop --1 ticket (on the bottom of the lollipop sticks, some had a black dot. Ones with black dots got a small toy prize from the dollar store, and if they didn't have a dot they got a pack of cookies or a candy or so)
2) gator Pond--3 tickets. Same thing with the dots, and prizes I also bought the little rubber tub gators at the dollar store.
3) Bucket toss-- 2 tickets. I bought some beach buckets with some balls and distributed small candies for the 1st two and a larger prize if they got it in the 3rd bucket
4)***This is the one that held the kids attention the most**
a fishing pond. I took my sons little pool (u can also use his baby bathtub) and I bought the little fishing kit from the dollar store, okay 2 of them (the magenetic ones) I also marked the fish with dots on some and did the prize thing for this game as well.

Okay, you get the point. I hope these ideas help and I hope you have the people that would volunteer to run the carnival booths. All the kids really enjoyed the interaction, the ticket idea and the prize ideas and the parents enjoyed watching them just play !!

if you go to babyshower.com, you will find ideas for games, gifts etc.
and for the birthday party, if there is more adults than children, we just used to have buffet style dinner, and a few games for the kids, and then the fun part, the cake and ice cream, and the gifts. The kids have fun, and so do the adults.

I am not sure that this would be a good game idea but it is nice to think about. I am a consultant of Stuff A Friend, which is kind of like Build-A-Bear from the mall, but better because you can do it at home. They sell party kits, where you can get 5 Stuff A Friend Kits at a discounted price, you choose the animals too. If you want to check it out here is my website http://www.stuffafriend.biz/members/pooh1623. My co-worker just bought one as a baby shower gift too! They also offer a coloring page for young ones too. Maybe you can purchase one or two friend kits if you don't want to do the party kit and give them away as gifts for the child who colors the best picture. Let me know if you have any questions.

I just had a first birthday party for my son and we bought a dart board but with the velcro balls at the dollar store and had a contest of who got the most points won a prize. Not sure how old the children will be that are attending but that is just an idea. Good luck and have fun!!

hi S.,
for the babyshower that i had we played a game where everybody but me. buy a bag of good bubble gum and hand one to every person...along with a number on a peice of paper...in another room make a chart with the numbers on it...have the guests chew the gum till it looses the flavor and they have to make thir gum look like a baby...the trick is no hand just their mouth..it's really fun..in the end you go and pick one that you think looks like a baby the most....and give them a prize...
another game is the toilet paper or string game... each guest takes some string from a ball and cuts off how big they think you are....

i hope all goes well i am not sure about the birthday party..i am starting to think about mine as well and mine is 6 months away....

good luck!

Sorry I don't have much advice on the 1 year old party, my sons party was mostly adults so we just visited....the theme was Monkey so I bought some inflatable monkies from Oriental Trading Co. and the younger kids had a ball playing with those, for the older teenage kids that would be there, I bought silly string and a stuffed animal monkey that had velcro on its hands and feet so they could play with the string outside and it kept them occupied.
As far as the baby shower, they had a really good game for me at my shower I will have to warn you though my shower was REALLY untraditional so this might not work at a "traditional" party. Mine was also a men and women shower so we had to play games that men would enjoy too. So here goes,
you get a jar to put coins in....pretty big. Everyone sits around the room and the first person starts by saying "I have never......." fill in the blank (changed a flat tire, gone skiing, gone skinny dipping, etc) So then everyone else in the room that HAS done that has to put a quarter in the jar. Then the next person does the same until you have gone all the way around the room. We had a blast! Everyone was laughing so hard. Some tips for this game though.....make sure everyone knows ahead that they need to bring some spare change, quarters work best because they add up faster but whatever they have. Also when you start the game tell people to try and think of something they haven't done that most other people have done....that makes more people put more money in the jar. Which in turn gives the expecting couple more money. We ended up with over $65 doing this game, then added the football pool (everyone guessing what day and time the baby would be born) to it and had over $100 to get a savings bond for the baby. I hope I explained that well enough for you. If it sounds like something you would be interested in doing but you don't quite understand it, write me back and I will try and go into more detail. Hope it helps.

My daughter's 1 year b-day was in August, so we had it at a playground with a beach ball theme. I bought about 25 beach balls and had them scattered all over the place. The kids loved it, from the babies to the six year olds. Since yours will have to be indoors, you could modify it. Check out Oriental Trading Company on line for inexpensive, soft, smaller sized balls. Fill up a couple of small plastic kiddie pools with the balls. It's not a game, but it should be good entertainment (not to mention some great photo opps!)

Have fun!

J.

P.S. Oooh! If you're really the adventurous type you could put a sheet down under one of the kiddie pools and fill it up with sand. A winter beach party!

Don't have any thoughts on the kids party.

But for the baby shower. You could do it as a Tupperware Party. The consultant comes up with the games & entertainment & all you have to do is invite the guest & think of refreshments. Of course there are several refreshements that involve Tupperware. The consultant gives a catlog to the mom to bee so she can mark things for her wish list. Then the consultant passes the book around to the guest & they can decide what they want to order for themsleves & the mom to be. WOrks really well for a bride to be or adult birthday as well. :-) Now of course I am a Tupperware Manager but if you already have a consultant please talk to her about it. If you do not have one I'll be more than happy to help you or anyone else that is interested in these ideas.
Good Luck & Have fun at all your parties. :-)

Hi S., we just celebrated our daughters 1 year party. We did it outdoors at Floyd Lamb State Park. I did not want to cook so we had it catered by Buckinghams BBQ, which was fairly inexepensive. We only had a few games, but lots of prizes to ensure everyone received a prize for trying. We had a scavenger hunt, asking for a pieces of gum, a dime, a shoelace, a lipstick, etc., we did a wheel barrel race asking hte kids to have their dad's help them, pillow case race again with the dads, and had a tug a war rope. The kids all had fun and the adults seemed to enjoy watching them because the wheel barrel race was especially funny. We also had a photographer at the party for the first 3 hours. The first 2 hours was for family portraits since we were all together and the last hour was just candid shots as the guest arrived. It was a long day, but what a blast! I am a professional photographer, although I was not the photographer at the party, as I wanted to enjoy the party. If you need help with that, contact me through my website at www.carlastephens.com. I hope you have fun!

A fun tradition we have adopted from our german sister is:

YOu place an apple a book and a shiny coin on the floor at one end of a hallway or room and then let the baby walk or crawl to the objects the first one she touches will tell you what she will do when she grows up.

Book: Interested in learning.
Apple: Interested in nature and good health.
Coin: Interested in money, will probably be a banker, broker, accountant.

It is always fun to see what they will grab for first.

Ok, for the baby shower...this was a HUGE hit at mine. It sounds horriably gross but everyone had so much fun. You'd take like 5-10 diapers and label them all a number & take 5-10 different bite size candy bars...melt them in the microwave...put them in the diaper...and pass them around for people to guess what kind they were. We had a list of 12 choices for 10 diapers. The one who got the most correct- got a prize. It sounds bad but it was so funny. I had people from 16 to 87 years old there and everyone got a kick out of it. Just an idea for you! Good luck!

For the 1 year old. Duck Duck Goose is fun or hide and seek.
For the baby shower: get some white rice uncooked (2 1/2 cups), then some small safety pins mix them all up in a medium size bowl, have an extra small bowl to put the pins in, then you blind fold the person they have one minute to fetch as many safety pins as possible. The best part of this game is the little safety pins feel like the rice. So when the guest is done fetching you would be amazed at how many rice kernals they fetch instead of the pins.
Hope this helps and have fun

Hi, S., Just a little tip, keep the party simple. Babies don't really like a bunch of noise and crowds. They get over tired and cranky. Make sure the party is after a good nap. That helps tremendously. I made applesauce cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for my little one, you can find the recipe online. Before the kids left I had them put large black dots on a poster board lady bug I made. Kids at this age just want to play. I also took a blow up pool and filled it with ball pit balls I bought at toys r us, that was a big hit. You can have the kids make their party hats or make placemats using contact paper. You can also take a paper table cloth, cover a table with it and have the kids color on it, that would be a good keep sake. I hope some of this helps. I have more ideas if you need them.

You can buy some fish (guppies/fighting fish) and put them in a cute decorated container for each child. The children were so happy to get their own fish and it's cheaper then getting a party bag :)

My sister -in-law threw a great party for me for my first... she got some of those snack sized ziplock bags and numbered them and then filled them with various white powdery substances, one was actually baby powder, and then she passed them around and everyone had to guess which was the bp without opening them --- and you can't smell through ziplock bags!!! She used flour and baking soda, baking powder, etc.
Then she got some cloth diapers and pins divided everyone into groups and the fastest group to diaper a stuffed animal won...
She found some little plastic diapers as favors and filled them with those little yellow cremy mints-- yeah, she gave out poopy diapers as favors!!! But it was a blast!!!! We were all laughing sooo hard!
Good luck and just remember the name of the game is to have fun!!!

With a one year old, the party is mostly for you. Not saying they won't like it, they will. Just remember some kids are really shy when it comes to being the center of attention. Hide and Seek is good. Year olds don't really socialize with other kids, yet. they play side by side, not games.

The shower: The funnest game I played was the White Elephant game. Your guests get a cheap present (like from the dollar stores or put a spending limit on the gift.) Then, everyone draws a number and the gifts are numbered. Number one goes and takes the first gift. When number two takes the gift, they get to choose. Do they want to keep gift two or take gift one from the person who was number one. They either keep their gift or trade. The more numbers there are the more trades. The higher the number the bigger the choices. I hope this makes sense. It's really funny, especially if you use gag gifts. Have Fun!!!
