Im seeking opinions of moms that have had any direct experience with polysistic ovarian syndrome and metformin.
I started taking metformin 500mg X1 day the first week of august, and within 3 days I got my cycle......... Therefore I was expecting my cycle the first week of september and nothing.... I did like 8 pregnancy tests and they all came back positive of course I was happy but no im a little bit worried that everything happen so quick. I haven't formally seen my Doctor I have an appt. in 2 wks but when he prescribed me the medicine he said for me to stop taking it as soon as I became pregnant. At this point I haven't been taking the medicine for two weeks but I have been in a lot of message boards and all moms say that you need to stay on it for at least the first trimester,
Please give me any personal stories about the subject, im really freaking out that I will loose my baby.

Congratulations! Something very similar happened to me. I was diagnosed with PCOS, and started taking Metformin in early March. I found out I was pregnant a few weeks later. I'm currently 26 weeks, and everything is great! My endocrinologist wanted me to quit taking the Metformin immediately; however, my OB/GYN wanted me to stay on it. I was really worried about miscarriage because my diagnosis was so new, so I decided to continue taking it. I really don't know that it did anything, but it gave me some peace of mind. Different doctors have different opinions on the subject, and it's possible to have a healthy pregnancy without it. You might want to see if you can get your appointment bumped up, so you can have your HCG levels monitored. That way, you will know for sure that your pregnancy is progressing. Finally, if you don't feel comfortable being off of it, get a second opinion.

Call your ob/gyn and double check on what they want you to do. I am a former ob/gyn and l&d RN, I do not know any reason why discontinuing the medicine would cause any threat to your pregnancy. Metformin is actually a diabetic medication that also treats PCOS and is frequently used for it. Don't worry at this point of any harm to the pregnancy. For reassurance, I would call your doc and ask and also request to come in asap to have your pregnancy hormones checked including your progesterone level as well.

I have PCOS and took metformin through my entire pregnancy with my son who is now two and a healthy boy. When I moved to Texas I interviewed doctors and I received different responses. One wanted me to get off of metformin as soon as I was pregnant and one wanted me to take it for the first trimester to reduce the risk of miscarriage. I ended up staying on it and lost the baby at 6 weeks. I don't think anyone knows for sure about the metformin. My three different doctors all had different theories.

I was told when it was prescribed to me to make sure that I REALLY wanted to be pregnant, because it could happen rather quickly. Two weeks after being on Metformin I was pregnant (after two years of trying!). I had some severe bleeding issues in the beginning...the doctor could not find the source of the bleeding, but warned me that I may loose the baby. I had weekly sonograms for a while and was put in "pelvic rest" for the first trimester. Everything turned out FINE and my son will celebrate his fourth birthday next month. I was told to stay on the Metformin by my OB. Later my doctor told me that he only had me on it for piece of mind - I did not need it, but it wasn't hurting the baby in any way. He told me that he was afraid that if I miscarried I would blame it on not having the medication, since there is so much misinformation out there. My doc mentioned that Metformin works because it helps women ovulate...it does not help sustain a pregnancy. Unfortunately if a miscarriage is imminent, there is nothing a doctor can do...no magic bullet, no shot, no pill. That's my experience. Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy. Congrats and good luck!

Well I had PCOS and was on Metformin for 10 years. It helped me get PG with both my children. I had 2 diff Dr since I moved out of state bewt kids. Both Dr kept me on Metformin during the 1st trimester. Being PCOS you are high risk and the Metformin helps control the Insulin Resistance and PCOS.
In the last trimester I was off the Metformin and it caused me to be Juenville Diabetes with both. I had to go to a Perimatal Dr to monitor the baby and sugar levels, and my ob for the reg check ups. When baby 1 was born he had too high insulin and went to NICU was born premature 7 weeks early. Baby 2 was born 4 weeks early and she had too low insulin and they got it raised to normal within a few hours and got to stay with us. Watch what you eat ! My kids are now 4 and 5 and they are healthy and you never known.

Send a msg if I cna answer anything else. Good luck !

Congratulations!!

I was on metformin, under the direction of my doctor, until 12 weeks pregnant. I stopped immediately after my 12 week scan where it was determined baby was perfect.

Doctor wanted to make sure that I did not suffer a miscarriage thus the continuation of metformin.

Best wishes to you....

G.,
I was diagnosed with PCOS many years ago. At a time where I had to search for Doctors who knew about it. I was put on Metfomrin and did not take it during my last two pregnancies. In fact I have four children now and never took it with any of them. It did regulate my cycle. I do not know why you would need to take it through the first trimester but whatever you do follow your doctors advice before message boards. If you are ever uncomfortable with what he/she tells you get a second opinion and do as much research as possible.
Good luck,
P.

Everyone is different
I have PCOS and stayed on 1000mgs Metformin throughout both of my pregnancies---babies were healthy and 8 1/2 pounds each
I think that it helped me not have gestational diabetes
you're probably ok off of it if your progesterone levels are good, so congrats!!!!

I have PCOS. I was on Metformin when trying to get pregnant for the second time. I got pregnant and stayed on Metformin until about 9 or 10 weeks along.

I would call your doctors office and either speak to the doctor or a nurse. I would also go in for a blood test to confirm the pregnancy.

Congrats!

I had my doctor tell me to stop taking it but my infertility specialist tell me to take it my whole pregnancy and beyond. I listened to my doctor which turned out to be fine fort he baby but I gained a ton of extra weight. WHat they did do was as soon as I had a + test, they had me come in and do an ultrasound plus start taking progesterone for the first couple of weeks.

Now, I see a doctor that has a lot of experience dealing with the long term treatment of PCOS. She said it was fine that I didn't take it but I probably would not have gained so much weight if I had. Also, I am still nursing my son (he is 10 months) and have been on Metforim the whole time so it must be fine to take. :)

Congrats!
