Never heard this one before. My son will eat huge spoonfuls and once half a jar when I wasn't paying close attention. He was fine. Not even a hive!

My 2 yr. old LOVES peanut butter. He'll eat 3-5 small spoon fulls at a time. I think it's good and healthy for him. My mother in law taught my hubby that too much peanut butter will cause "boils" on the bum-butt. I have not ever seen any boils on any of our children and they all loved peanut butter from a very young age. BTW,,,,, my hubby is not, nor has ever been, allergic to peanuts. Have any of you heard of this "peanut butter, boil-related" occurrence?

Boils? On the butt? Um, never heard that one. Between my hispanic ex-MIL and my own mother's crazy southern stories...I thought I had heard it all.
There IS a link between peanut butter and cold sores/herpes outbreaks (for those who are susceptible). Peanuts are high in the amino acid arginine. When arginine and lysine get out of balance, it can cause issues.
High arginine has also been linked to enhanced wound healing.
I have personally had boils off and on for years. They started in Jr high (I graduated high school in 1994) and came back full force in my mid-late 20's. Dr's really don't know where boils come from (in my experience) besides bacteria getting under the skin in a cut you can't see. I have scars all over my stomach and tush from boils and I do not eat peanut butter. It's ok and all, but I'm not a huge fan so I rarely eat it. I think it's a wives tale or maybe your MIL thinks peanut butter is bad for people (my mom still has a hard time with "good oils" and things like avocados being good for you even though they have fat and calories in them).
Best of luck,
C.
I've never heard of anything like this. Both of my kids eat and have eaten peanut butter since they were 1. My youngest only eats about 4 things -and PB is one of them! No boils!
Never, ever. Don't worry about it.
No allergy? Sounds like an old wives tale to me. Perhaps that is her way of saying not to give too much!?! MIL's these days!!!!! Gotta love 'em!!!!
I know this is a very late answer, but I just had to chime in. I know exactly what your MIL is talking about- I get boils whenever I eat more than a spoonful of peanut butter, and even a bite of a Reese's peanut butter cup. I do think it's an allergy, though, so if your children don't have a problem with it, then I doubt they will. It's not an old-wives tale, but it's definitely not true for everyone- just an unfortunate few.
Maybe she is talking about hives in someone who is allergic? If no one in the family had this allergy I wouldn't worry
Sounds like just a way to say he could have a reaction. My daughter has gotten LARGE patches of hives on her butt and leg creases when she was having a reaction to something.

Sounds like an old wives tale to me (the only possible exception would be if someone has an allergy to peanuts which could cause problems). Your son obviously does not have an allergy to them. My kids eat tons of peanut butter with no problems - good source of protein and fat for kids!
If that were true, I would have had a lifetime of boils on my bum and still would. I have always been and still am a peanut-butter-on-the-spoon person. My thought is that is would depend a lot on your body type.
I have never heard of this and I have been a pediatric nurse for 30 years. I am however concerned more about choking with peanut butter and all nut butters in kids under 3 years of age. A friend's child chocked and did not survive when she was 20 months old, just be so very watchful. I do not recommend any nuts or nut butters in children under 3 years.
Nope. Not unless she's referring to someone who was allergic OR perhaps someone who got a nasty yeast infection from too much sugared peanut butter. But most likely it's just an old wives' tale.
