Peanut Butter Scare

Has anyone experienced sick little ones? My 10y/o son vomited before school this am, stayed home. My 4y/o had diarrhea and a temp of 101. We just discovered our jar of Peter Pan had the product number listed in the recall. I am not afraid to care for them at home, I am a nurse. But, was wondering if someone needs to know about this i.e doctor, health dept, etc.

What can I do next?

My daughter who doesn't eat peaunut butter was very sick over the weekend with high fevers and the Dr said it was a very bad virus. They did blood work and a flu test and they all came back indicating this to be viral so i wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it is connected to the peanut butter.

Since there are many causes of vomiting and diarrhea, I would contact my pediatrician about getting the stool tested for salmonella. Usually, salmonella is a self-limited illness and the recommendation is not to treat with antibiotics for most cases.

I thought my son had the flu this week. Tuesday he ate 3 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Wednesday he was having stomach cramps, diarhea, vomiting, and fever. Thursday morning when I heard the recall I went and checked out the peanut butter and it was the recalled number. I threw it away. By noon Thursday my son was fine. I don't know if it was the peanut butter or a virus.

I am currently at home with my four year old who vomited all day yasterday (we almost went to the ER last night). He has no fever at all. We don't eat peanut butter, although I am quite a Peter Pan fan! My 4 year old is alergic to peanuts. I would have the pedi check it out, but there is quite a stomach flu/virus going around too!!

A long time ago my oldest son got solmenella from an outbreak caused by icecream - the state of MN keeps those records and called us quarterly for a year to make sure he didn't have any lasting effects. I don't know how TX monitors mass oubreaks.

This started in August, so I would think that if you have been eating from that PB for a while, it should be fine, but if it's new, you never can tell. It's crazy all of the stuff causing food poisoning now. It's like we can't eat anything. I hope everybody is feeling better.

If it makes anyone feel better, both my son and I ate some at a friend's house and both us and their family are all ok, no symptoms at all. It is scary though. Good luck to everyone and if in doubt just call your pedi if only for their record keeping purposes! I know mine keeps records on every little call I make so they can ask about it when I go in for a well check.

I wouldn't trust it to be a "virus" or Salmonella unless they do tests that prove it! This "virus" that is going around, my DD had it about 3 weeks ago but the Doc. never did tests for it.
She started feeling nausea again this Thursday and when I took her to see the Doc. he said it may have been the peanut butter the whole time (we had a 2111 jar in our cupboard)! But he still didn't do any tests to make sure. Unless they vomit and have direahhea for a prolonged amount of time they don't test for anything at all. It's just not cost effective to test for any stomach bug (virus or salmonella) unless you end up in the hospital from it.
My DD has had four stomach "flu/virus" episodes since October. Far more than most kids have in a year. She's a healthy active kid. I have a cousin that also feeds his kids Peater Pan and his kids have had multiple bouts of stomach problems since last fall too.
This may be supposition but, in my opinion, things just don't seem to add up in favor of it being a "virus".
Unfortunatly, to answer your question, They will not take your peanut butter for testing, or want to record (or hear about) your illness, unless your children end up in the hospital.
If they do, then CDC and health departments will be all over that jar of PB!

Let me know if you find out...we had that same lot number as well and have all been sick off and on for about a week. I'm wondering if our symptoms are related to the peanut butter. Lot's of stomach cramping, gas and diarrhea.

I have four jars of pb right now. Three of which were part of the recall. I just bought one and never ate out of it, but the other two are at least half gone. I never got sick off of any of them. I did get some kind of virus this week, though, and now my kids have it. I hope everyone gets to feeling better soon!

I would definitely contact their pedi., just to let them know what symptons your children are having. It may or may not be related to the PB, but you want to take precautions. My family had the recalled PB also, and we had even eaten some, but thank goodness no one became ill! Hope the kiddos feel better soon!

I didn't think you ran fever with food poisoning.I know that there has been several viruses going around with vomiting and diarrhea. I don't think it's from your peanut butter.

Seeing your a nurse I am sure you will do the rigth thing. I would advise you to call your pedi and at least report that your kids had ingested the peanut butter that was recalled - its possible they might have information you may not be seeing published in the news. And go to the news link for channel 5 online -- in last nights news they made recommendation about what you should do and who you should call if you had come into contact with it as well. And also listed there is info on how you can get a refund too!
Good luck - hope your kids are feeling better really soon.
