Peapod

I'm a mom of two (full time) and a baby sitter for two to three during the day. By the end of the day - I really don't want to hit the grocery store. The weekend is so crazy with ballet and laundry and yardwork and drycleaning and friends... To do the grocery shopping, it takes me about an hour at the store. I have to pull the stoller with the 6 mo. old and push the cart with the 4 yr. old. I spend about $250 per week. Then I have to load the truck - and unload it when I get home - and put it away. I'm getting a great deal on prices at Shoppers. Giant's prices seem to be a bit more...but is this Peapod thing worth it? I could save a lot by buying while watching the price per unit and with the online sales - plus save for school with Up Promise. Will the driver think I'm really that high and mighty to have my groceries DELIVERED??? (I mean, I'm the type that has never even splurged to get her nails done...) Does anyone use this service and LOVE IT?

So What Happened?

Alright, I bit...I spent about $250 - but I figured over 40 meals (breakfasts, lunches, and dinners)...took me all day (back and forth - adding and subtracting items to stay within a budget) - I went through the sale ads and planned the meals out of what was on sale instead of planning the meals first. MOST of the stuff was on sale. SOME of the stuff I didn't really need. I wasn't so brand loyal - but I didn't go straight generic. Bought big items that I could separate and freeze (my Food Saver comes back from the shop soon). This could actually work!!! A huge load has been lifted now that I know my grocery shopping is virtually DONE - and will be delivered somewhere tomorrow between 12 and 2. :) Now, who can I pawn my laundry off on? (Just kidding).

P.S. Thanks ladies. You really helped.

I used it when I was pregnant with #3 and was too big and uncomfortable to walk the store and it was the BEST!!!!

I usually had the same delivery guy every time and he bought all the bags right to the kitchen.

You should absolutely do it!!!!

Hi C.,
I think that you are exactly the type of customer that this service was designed for. I think Safeway may have a program too.
I have 2 co-workers who use this. One is a parent of 5. He says that its a god send to just have diapers and such appear at your door! My other co-worker is a single Mom, who just didn't want to go to the grocery store after work, so she would arrange for the delivery to come just before he son got home for school so that he would hopefully be the one to put things away. The drivers aren't going to judge you. The fact that you are using the service is keeping them employed. I believe that there is a small service charge, but it varies based on the amount of groceries being delivered. Also, one neat thing that one of them showed me is that you can keep a running 'grocery list', so that as you buy things and need them replaced, they automatically appear on your choices.

I've used them before and liked it but then I started driving past the store so it made more sense to stop. Most drivers are very courteous and don't think anything of it. Many people are busy and don't have time or have been sick and can't go to the store. So I wouldn't worry about it and if it saves you time and energy then HURRAAAYYY.

Hi C.,

I have never used it because they don't currently deliver in my area. A friend of mine has her groceries delivered and LOVES it. She's been doing it for a while.

I absolutely love it... go for it... it will make your life so much easier. The first time you spend a lot of time making your list, but do it right and the next times will be really easy. It is definitely worth it.

Hi C.,
Yes, peapod is really worth it!The little extra that you pay for delivery is more or less equal to what you'd pay in gas and frustration! It's also a time saver, at least a couple of hours a day that you Don't have to load the kids in the car, drive to the store, find parking , get them all out, into the store, find a cart.....I think you get the idea! Really, try it....

I use the Safeway one and LOVE it - it gets easier every time as I just scan through my prior purchases and then add whatever new items I need. I started using it when my baby was born and found that I actually save money as I have time to scope out the specials (buy one get one free) and also have more time to look at nutritional labels and make better decisions about the food I buy. I find when I go to the store with both kids I am just throwing stuff into the basket and trying to get out of there as quickly as possible. Also Safeway will send Free delivery coupons about once a month so that helps. And why would you be worrying about what the driver thinks... he is making a living helping people get the food they need to feed their family. DO IT!!

I agree with Megan, they get paid to deliver your groceries to you--who cares what they think! I'm sure there were moms like you and those who are unable or its simply inconvenient to go to the store who wished and/or suggested for this type of service.

I have not used the Peapod service (my grocery store is right down the street and I go while kids are in school) but I do shop for safer products for my home online and save an average of $100 every month and save time, gas and have them delivered to me. There definitely is an advantage to having up to the minute alerts and updates on sales and being able to shop from the comfort of your home which I have found also cuts out a lot of 'impulse buying'.

Anyway, update us on whether or not you use Peapod and your experience!

Peapod is totally worth the extra money for the delivery fee for busy moms. Also, because you're not in the store, it helps cut down on impulse buys. The driver will bring the groceries into your kitchen if you ask - just be sure to give him a tip!

Peapod is so very worth it!!! And that was back in the day before I even had kids. I am now overseas so it's been about 4 years but the delivery charge was minumal and they even delivered when we were snowed in. Do it girl, do it!! I can't stress what a time and money saver it was for me. Don't hold back...the fruits and veggies are better quality that you'd pick out in the store and they haven't been picked over by everyone who visited the store before you that day.

I have used peapod, and it is so worth it....
The first time you have to order your groceries it does take a little bit of time because you have to search for what you want, but after that they keep a running list of what you've ordered online and bought in the store. So it is pretty easy and so much faster then going to the store. I also found that I saved money by shopping online. I would just go online and ordered what I needed, yet when I go to the store I always get suckered into buying more stuff that I really don't need. It's a great service.

I used Peapod when I came home from the hospital with my new baby. I used it for three months until I was good and ready to go grocery shopping again. I loved it! To me it was well worth the delivery charge, and the drivers were all very nice. Peapod never made mistakes on my order, and I would even use coupons (just give them to the driver). It's great because you feel like you have so much more time when you don't spend hours at the grocery store. Even if you only use it occasionally, I think it's a smart thing to do. If we have a bad winter this year, I'll probably start using it again rather than taking the baby out on slippery roads in the cold.

I used this service when I was single in a second level condo simply because I thought it saved me alot of time and compensated me for the free time lost commuting to work. I also can't stand shopping and found making my grocery list online during lunch and as needed then scheduling delivery was so faster then actually driving out to the store, trying to find evrything in the store, wait in line longer than it took me to find the groceries. Ugh! it was so worth it. I thought the price really wasn't significantly different than in store prices and you even get alot of the sale prices online also so you don't miss out on those savings either.

My husband does a lot of the shopping for us now and so I haven't used the service really since we hooked up but highly recommend it for those who are not as fortunate as I.
