I also cloth diapered for awhile and I agree with the white vinegar suggestions. I just wanted to add that a great way to do that is to get one of those "Downy balls" and put the vinegar in there. Add it to the wash, but the ball won't open until the rinse cycle, where you want it. (I would never remember to put it in the rinse cycle otherwise). Also, baking soda is good, but DO NOT put them together--one or the other. And no fabric softener--that just masks the problem, doesn't take care of it. Hope that helps!

I just asked the same question recently. The thing that worked was soaking the clothes in white vinegar and water before washing in the regular laundry.

have you tried baking soda or borax. i cloth diaper part time and in process of potty training an almost 3 yr old. those seem to get the smells out

Could he have a urinary tract infection - because usually that washes right out. If you are not already, maybe try a liquid softener, sometimes those will help with smells.

Also, check the bed to make sure the mattress does not smell and is re-smelling the sheets. :)

I use cloth diapers too, the sheets can't be more of a problem to clean than those! Most of the time I run them in one cold wash with an extra rinse with no detergent. Then, when that is finished I run a wash on hot with cold rinse with 1/4 cup detergent. (half the normal detergent) It may be that your sheets have build up onthem that is keeping the smell in. You can strip them like I would my diapers. Detergent and especially fabric softener can make build up. You can soak themin hot water for 2 hours with either vinegar, Oxy clean, or baking soda. Then wash as normal and see if they improve. I like Oxy clean personally. I had one problem too with my diapers because I have hard water and have to use a product called RLR every 2 months or so to remove the mineral build up. Good luck!

try a detergent called Win. Its in a blue bottle and in publix its on the top shelf. I use it formy sons football clothes and when my grandson has an accident.

Ou company does commercial cleaning and odor remediation when necessary. There is a non-toxic product called SCOE 10X that is patented and produced here in Apharetta. You can mix up a presoak that is reusable if kept in an air tight container. It will remove urine, smoke, and any other odor. Soak, wring out, then wash as usual. This is very economical and safe. It will work with pet odors as well.

First pre-rinse,then soak in baking soda and water for about 30 minutes and wash as usual. That works most of the time. One other solution is to go to a pet supermarket such as PetCo and purchase the urine smell and stain remover madefor pets. Follow the instructions. The baking soda is much cheaper. V.

Hi. I have a son who has a small bladder and he has accidents frequently, especially at night while he is asleep. I have tried many things. I have found that Purex with Renuzite odor controller works the bast. Its a blue box (Powder last longer than liquid) with yellow on it. Add your fav fabric softener. Hope this helps! Let me know.

I used Borax - a natural laundry booster - to get the smell. You can get it at Walmart or the grocery store. It is in the section with laundry detergent.

Sprinkle some baking soda in the washer with the detergent, it works everytime.

Have you tried switching detergents? We were using "All Free & Clear" when we first came home with our son. It didn't touch the urine smell, even after repeated washings. Yuck. (Ironically, our pediatrician's office gives out samples of it all the time. All seems to be trying to get in on the Dreft market.) I switched to Seventh Generation and it has been great. My mother-in-law swears by putting a little white vinegar and some baking soda in the wash, along with detergent, for her daughter's play clothes. It works, too.

I second the Borax. We heard about it from a friend of ours who uses cloth diapers and it has been wonderful! I only wish I knew about this three kids ago :)

A 1/2 cup of vinegar in the wash does WONDERS! Eliminates the smell, but doesn't leave a vinegar smell after drying.
I have even upped it to a full cup depending on how bad the smell was!

I have used cloth diapers for 11 children. Istarted by using bleach to get the odor out but it ruined the material and as I now won't use anything toxic it isn't an option anyway. I have used Basic G for years now. It is made by Shaklee. It doesn't damage my diapers and kills every germ under the sun. It is economical since it is concentrated. Yes I do sell SHaklee but I used it for years before I started selling it. I wouldn't recomend it if I didn't swear by it. If it can take the odor out of diapers it can take the odor out of anything!

When i was taking care of my grandmother who was incontinent i had to put her clothes through a wash cycle with a bottle of clear or white vinegar in it to neutralize the urine odor. I usually used the smallest plastic bottle they had before it went to glass. Then after the cycle completed, wash them again normally. You may smell vinegar but that is better than pee.

Vinegar is inexpensive too.

my wife suggests using baking soda or even a detergent that is baking soda based.

Another great product that you can't find on stores here is Wonder Soap. It's an Austrailian product and if you Google it I think you may find a distributor of it here that may sell it in bulk. Both of these should help solve your problems, good luck.

I spray stain remover on the area before I wash my son's pants (especially jeans)...it is in essence a stain and after rubbing it on the entire area, it comes out after the wash smelling great!!!

Have you tried washing in hot water and adding vinegar to your load along with detergent? I've used vinegar for smells before and it has helped alot. I'd use a few cups for a large load.
