Peeing at Night

Hi Moms,
My son is 5 and is potty trained, but not for when he is asleep at night. I was wondering what you all use in this situation to catch the pee and protect the pjs and bed? He pees right before bed. We use pull-ups and take him to go to the bathroom again before we go to bed at night. I change his pull up almost every night when we take him to pee because it is so full. And many times in the middle of the night or the early morning, he will wake up and have wet pjs because the pull-up is so full. I understand about limiting fluid intake in the evening. Any suggestions on what to use that will hold enough pee for a 5 year old? Or any other input?

Update: I have also tried goodnites, but my son is particularly skinny so they don't fit very well.
Thanks!
Cyndi

So What Happened?

Thanks for the input. There is no medical issue. We switched to good nites and although they do not fit great, they are doing the job most of the time.

I know you will get a ton of answers to this. I just want you to know that my son when he was that age was potty trained when awake, but had trouble with peeing at night. We got Good Nights by pull up brand. Pampers have a product that is the same for older kids. It is like a depends for younger kids. It took my son a while before he was able to go all night. Don't stress over it. I tried getting my son up in the middle of the night and limiting liquids, but he just wasn't ready then. He is completely potty trained now. =) Good luck!!!! Let us know what happens.

Have you tried switching from pull ups to something like Goodnites? Those are meant for older kids. Maybe it will hold more? A mom on our tball team said they helped her family a great deal. It may be worth a shot.

I would get him checked out by a doctor and consider food allergies as a possible cause - it was for my niece. Is there one food that he craves everyday? If so that is probably the allergen. Try skipping it for a few days and see if it makes a difference.

My son was like yours, too small to fit in goodnights, peed too much for pull-ups - I hated that stage. Try www.bedwettingstore.com, they have some bed overlays that are great. You'll still have wet pjs, but at least you won't have to change the sheets. Someone below mentioned bedwetting is common to age 7; that's not correct, it's common to age 11 and not uncommon to age 15 per my pedi and pediatric urologist. My son wet till 9, then when he was ready we got the bedwetting alarm and he was dry in about 10 weeks.

Put the goodnight on over the pull up?

if he is peeing that much you need to talk to his doctor sounds like a bigger under lying medical issue

Some kids pee during the night even to 7 years old and Pull-ups are enough. For others, it is not enough, especially after they grow even older (some boys have problems up until 12 -- and they grow up just fine, btw).

If you think he may be peeing excessively, you may have him checked out as several things could make him pee too much, and not just diabetes. Kidney problems and even a difference in the way the pituitary regulates salt-water balance in the body.

It can happen (too much urination) even due to too much OR too little salt (this can happen, but not usually on a standard American diet!)

In any case, if Pull-Ups are not enough, check out the adult diapers.

My kids are much older but I remember the advice I was that you don't put them in underware unless they are trained day AND night. If you keep him in pullups or goodnights at night, then its kind of giving him the OK that he can pee in them, because of the simple fact he is wearing them. Have you ASKED him why he's still peeing at night? Just ask him if he wants to stop and then help him. No drinks at least an hour before bed, rewards for every morning he wakes up dry, let him pick out new underware he can wear at night and tell him he can have them if he stays dry for a week straight, etc. Good luck!!!

My daughter is the same. The pediatrician has told me you can't train them at night (though my mom disagrees). My daughter has NEVER had a dry night in her life. She was day trained at 22 mos! I truly believe that it is that her body isn't ready and doesn't let her know she has to go when sleeping. I am just waiting it out. Yes they leak, and we do use the good nights. Maybe you can you put some tighter PJ bottoms on to keep the good nights on him. They do work 100 times better than pull ups. Best of luck - someday, we WILL stop investing in night time diapers : ). Also, I don't belive in waking him to go to the bathroom... mine wouldn't go back to bed! Just let him sleep and let nature take it's course. Take Care
