Period After Baby - Emporia,KS

After I had my first baby, my period came back at 4 months. I was on the "mini-pill" and I was also nursing exclusively. It was very heavy and after that first time I immediately became regular again. This time around, I started my period on New Year's Eve (Welcome to the new year!!) and again it was very heavy. My baby was again 4 months old. Two weeks after that period, I had another, although it was not as heavy. Now it's 7 weeks from my initial period and 5 weeks from that lighter period and I haven't had another one. I've been "crampy" and keep feeling like I'm going to start, but it's not happening and it's making me nervous. I thought that once it comes back, it's back. Has anyone else had it return, then be gone for longer than a month and then come back again? I'm praying to God that I'm not pregnant, which I don't know how that could be possible with me being on the pill and us only doing it once or twice since the new year! Someone give me some hope here. I do NOT want to take a pregnancy test....

So What Happened?

Thanks for your input! I still haven't started yet, but I do feel much better after reading these responses. I guess I'll just count myself as one of the lucky ones. We did just start our daughter on cereal and we started my son ealier, so maybe that plays a part?? (breastfeeding exclusively) I just don't understand then why I would have had one in January.

Mine never really got regular between babies. After my first daughter, when it came back (don't remember when), it was on a very long cycle - it actually "regulated" to where I would have a period every other month.

I think that, for many women, it can take a long time to get regular again.

You sound just like me right now. I have a 17 mo old (second baby). It took 4 mos for my period to return. Then I had my period, really heavy, for about 4 abnormally long and short cycles. Then nothing for 4 mos- not pregnant either. Went to the doctor and got some meds, which started my period cycle again. She also did an ultrasound and thyroid/hormone panel and everything was normal. But after three months of having my period again, I am now on another dry spell. It's been almost three months since my period. My husband has had a vasectomy, but the dr makes me take a pregnancy test. In fact, I need to pick up one on the way home today, take it, and then call the dr tomorrow. Wish I had some advice. Just know you are not alone. :(

With my three boys, there were differences with when my period returned and became regular. No cause for alarm. I would break out the "old" undies (or cheap ones) for now.

Also, whether you are breastfeeding makes a difference. Try to get a good amount of calcium and the right amount of iron.

Good luck.

OMG-this could have been me after baby #2. It's like I was typing this post! Normal after baby #1 and just like this after #2. I got my period back after only 2 or 3 months both times even tho I was exclusively nursing, too. Only diff between us is that I never did the pill. What you are experiencing is normal and you will regulate again, even if it takes the better part of a year. Doubt you are preggers!

After my baby I would have the symptoms of my period coming, cramps, and I also get an upset stomach. It did this on and off for like 3 months then finally came. I would say it's normal!

I think as long as you're nursing and your hormones still aren't back to "normal", periods can be messed up. I started 4 months after my first was born too, and was also nursing only. when she was 7 months, i was super late and freaking out, but just turned out to be late.

my first and second were like clock work after it came back in 6 weeks. The last it was all OVER the board. I didnt take BC, and I didnt do anything different. I was breastfeeding, and I was older. So I cant say why it messed up so bad after my 3 child. I would get it like every other month some times every 2 months for the year after he was born. Now its back on track with a minor blip in January. I got 2 in one month.
