so, I'm a little worried about oversharing here, but I'm also a little concerned about what my body is doing right now!
I had a non-hormonal IUD placed in the beginning of July. The next day I had a regular period...well, it went long (13 days) but is was only the second period I had had since my daughter was born and I'm still breast feeding. so not suprised not to see a real regular period yet.
I started my period this morning. Oh MY Goodness!! I have been bleeding so heavily, a couple of times it has felt like gushes, and I have gone through a lot more pads than I normally would in a day. Just now I went to the bathroom because I felt like something was there, and it was my IUD!
My doctor warned me that a tampon could pull it out, but I wasn't wearing a tampon today. i can't believe the IUD came out!!
I have also had horrible cramping all day (which I usually have none, to very mild), and a miserable headache.
Any idea what may be going on here? I will be making an appt to go to the doctor tomorrow, but was hoping for some advice/thoughts today!

I wonder if you got it in too soon after giving birth? I have heard of several moms happy with them way back when I asked around. But most of the ladies who shared, had one with hormones. I had a NorPlant(sp?)way back when and I had horrible bleedeing the first year. There was not one day out of the first few months that I did not at least spot. Good luck to you!

I think when I got my IUD the information said there was a small chance of this happening. I guess your body can kind of confuse the IUD for a miscarried baby and push it out. Good luck with the doctor tomorrow.

Is your IUD the Paragard? I just had it put in, and I was told by my dr. and friends who have tried it that Paragard generally does cause heavy bleeding. I am not looking forward to that first period as a result (2 months postpartum and still BF). Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hmm, maybe he put it in wrong? Maybe the IUD isn't for you? I'd take a break from it, anyway.

I've never personally had an IUD, but I've known others who have and nothing good has ever come of it. From my experience IUDs only cause damage. Every story I've ever heard of women using them includes pain and cramping, very heavy bleeding, and perminant damage :( Not to mention the fact that it doesn't keep you from getting pregnant, it just rips the baby from the wall of your uterus if you do get pregnant! I think you'd be surprised what you'll find if you googled about the negatives of IUDs. It's a foreign object in a very sensitive area that is just there damaging tissue, and your body is working hard to get rid of it. Your body succeeded! My advice is to leave it out and find a healthier way to prevent pregnancy. Ever heard of Natural Family Planning? That's what we do.

On another note, drinking red raspberry leaf tea will help your body balance your hormones and heal any damage to your uterus. You can buy it at health food stores or a couple reputable herbal websites like bulkherbstore.com or iwantherbs.com.

Sorry, to be so blunt, but I don't like to beat around the bush when it comes to peoples health.

Blessings,
Amy

Hi I.,
I had the non hormonal IUD for one year starting about 9 months after the birth of my son. During that time my periods were HORRIBLE (HEAVY and FREQUENT!). I'd always had light to reasonable periods before. I finally had it pulled and replaced with the LOW hormone 5 year one and have been FABULOUS ever since. I really DID want to go without hormones, but the side effects of the IUD were so awful, that "the Merena" 5 year low hormone has been such a RELIEF. Good luck!

My period came back with a vengeance 6 months after my son was born. I had a c-section and opted to have my tubes tied at that time. I thought maybe one had to do with the other, but that seems not to be the case. This did not happen with my daughter, so I was a little concerned. I have miscarried twice, once with mild pain, once pretty horrible- this fell in between- I actually thought maybe the Dr. forgot about the tubal ligation. Of course he didn't. I had never had any problems before this with flow or cramps- I never knew what other women were complaining about. Silly me.
The first 3-4 months were like that, but now things have calmed down.
It’s good that you are going to see your doctor soon- always best to investigate these matters! Good luck to you!

Hi I.-
I am not sure what to say except that maybe you can't use birth control. My sister had all of the same problems trying to use the pill and she went crazy, literally, after bleeding, etc. The hormones made her wacky. I then tried them, and at 23 years of age had to go off. Our periods were weird, the bleeding was abnormal, and our bodies and minds screamed in the process. We both went off of them and while my sister still has longer periods (she just quick breast feeding 2 months ago) she is no longer all over the place and the bleeding is pretty regular, though heavy in the middle. Mine has since gotten really heavy days, but all the other effects are gone.
I really think that if you are wanting to not have another child soon, you should use condoms and vaginal foam. I know it means you have to be methodical when it comes to sex with your husband, but neither my sister nor I have had children that were unplanned and this is all we do. All forms of birth control are off the table for us.
Anyway, see your doctor, but please try not to put too many things into your body. It knows when something foreign is not supposed to be there and seriously I think it pushes it out. Sounds weird, but I really believe it. You doc should be able to give you other alternatives, too, if you still really want the IUD or something similar. With everything out there, you can get the depo shot, or the implant in your arm.
Hope this helps
-E. Mc

I.,

I am sorry to hear about your IUD ordeal. That seems to be a serious mishap and I am glad that you are seeing a doctor ASAP. I had my IUD inserted after delivery and have not experienced any adverse effects since and that was 14 months ago.
In general and this is only from my experience, the IUD reduces the menstrual flow. The first couple of months, my period was heavy, but after the 3rd month, it was so light and my previously severe cramps had significantly diminshed. During the initial 3 months, there would be occassional spotting but nothing more. And now, my flows are so light that I often forget I am on my period. This is all said to highlight the typical experience of the IUD. I suggest speaking with you OB/GYN and ensuring, if you decide to get another one, that it is properly placed. Also go for the follow up appointment about a month after insertation to check that it has not moved and is still securely in place.

I just got my iud removed after having it for 2years.... I am wanting to have another child..not for complications..I absolutely LOVED my iud..Although the first 2-3monthes I did not like it..I would have my period for 3weeks at a time and then be off a week then start again.. I did go to the dr. after a month asking for her to take it out and she said to wait at least 2-3months and then if I still didnt want it then she would take it out but it takes time in the begininng and I did get some bad cramping but after all that subsided i loved it and will definetley be using it again after my next child..I had the mierena iud not sure which one you have.. And yes one thing that could happen is heavy bleeding and it could fall out and you just go back to the dr. and have it put back in...Good luck with it!!!

I'll start off by saying I don't know anything about IUDs. I know a few people who have them and they haven't talked about the issues you've described with having an IUD but that's second-hand information - you can take it or leave it.

What I really wanted to tell you was about all the hormonal stuff going on in your body. You pretty much described my first few periods after my last baby. My personal experience has been that the headaches are due to the crazy hormonal changes my body was going through after having the baby. I nurse as well and because of that, I don't usually have a period for at least a year, but when I do finally have one, it's a doozy!

I think it's good that you're going to the doc but my personal opinion is that there's nothing abnormal going on.

Hi I.,
You must be totally exhausted with all that your body is going through and with two little ones to care for. Sounds like you've got it under control with a visit to your doc tomorrow. Also, you've had so much advice from other Moms about birth control I won't chime in there (haven't really figured it out myself and am pregnant now) but I do suggest that you
Get some rest
Drink lots of water. Your headache might be due to dehydration, particularly if you're also breast feeding. Try some gatorade or some electrolyte replacement drink, not just water.
Blood loss like this takes its toll on your body and I encourage you to be kind to yourself in the next few weeks.
Eat iron-rich foods, too: beef, turkey, dried fruits, leafy greens, molasses if you like it.
Take care,
A.

your body rejected the IUD and you literally gave birth to it! Your bleeding should slow down, but, you can help it by taking 600mg of Motrin every 6 hours until you get to your doc. It sounds like you need a different form of birth control (get your husband a vasectomy, we love ours!)

Hi I.,

If you are soaking a pad an hour, I think it would be considered hemmoraging. I had similar hemmoraging after I took docotr prescribed medication for a vaginal infection. Turns out I was pregnant at the time, but the urine test didn't show it.Either it was too early for it to show up or my urine was not concentrated enough. Either the medication or the infection caused me to abort.

IUD's can be dangerous. They can cause Infection, perforation of the uterus, and future sterility.
It is a misnomer for the family planning community to call it a contraceptive. They mislead women. The IUD is an abortion agent. It doesnt stop you from getting pregnant. The zygote is typically already a week old when it causes it to die. Could I reccommend an alternative? There is a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". It will train you how to recognize your fluids, tempuratures, and where you are in your cycle so that you can know when you are due to ovulate. It's easy, and great to know your body so intimately! It gives you back your power over you body that the doctors take from so many women.

I'm sorry you had to go through such a hard time. I hope you get well quickly.

Gail

I would definitiely ask your doctor but I also have had a change in my period since my son. I didn't get it for 9 months after he was born because I was nursing but when it did come back it was back full force. I have tons of cramping and my flow is so heavy I have leaked through both super and super plus tampons. On top of that I have had my period every two weeks and for at least 5 days if not more. The first time was 10 days. Before my son I used have light periods, fairly normal cycle, and only 4 days at the most. So I've heard that it does take a while to regulate itself.

Eek! I have heard of IUDs moving around internally and causing pain, but not of them coming out. Make sure your doctor explains your options in a way that you can understand.
