Eww - yes, completely normal ... I couldn't believe how periods come back with a vengeance and boy do they ever. In fact, IMO, your first few periods will be quite heavy!!! ugh!
I just stopped nursing my daughter who will be a year on the 28th and my period finally came back. It is going on 7 days - full flow - and I'm getting concerned. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

You shouldn t be too fretfull sounds like you body is back on track but if the bleeding goes on heavy for more than 5 to 7 days give the doc a call that what he is there for lov

If it's your first, it's totally normal!! It will take a few cycles to get back on track and you can have anything from spotting for a few days to a heavy flow for just over a week. I wouldn't get concerned unless it's incredibly painful (I get worse cramps for the first few, but I can still function for the most part) or if it's lasting 2 weeks or longer. If you don't feel right about it, though, don't hesitate to call your ob/gyn. You're the only one who really knows your body and go with your gut if you start to get nervous.
Good luck!
Completely normal. I experienced the same situation, it seems like it's a heavier and a much longer menstrual cylcle. I have not ever being the kind to have a cycle like this and so my OBGYN suggest that I start back up on the pill to control and moderate my menstrual cycle. That seem to work just fine for me.
YES!!! its ALWAYS REAL heavy for your first one and sometimes several after that... if you start passing clots bigger than a half dollar to a golf ball and/or bleed through a maxi pad in an hour then call your dr.
IT sucks...what we go through!
Your first period is probably not going to be what you would consider 'normal' like they were before. Unless your soaking through pads and/or it last longer than 12 days and doesn't look like it's slacking off, I wouldn't worry. Just make sure you're getting some iron! It should eventually just get back to normal. Mine always did.
yes...it's very normal... I had mine for abotu 12 days afterward...Just think of it this way. You haven't had one in well over a year. Your body has some purging to do. I think it should taper off in a few days. If not or if you feel dizzy or something like that, I'd call your OB and ask his/her opinion. Good Luck
As any doctor will tell you, after you give birth, your body goes through so many changes. One of these major changes is going to be your menstration period and flow. Now if the bleeding gets so bad that you start feeling weak and unable to do normal activities, then you should see your doc immediatly!!! In the mean time take iron and drink alot of water and eat bananas...its been found they help with cramping because of potassium, weird I know...and wait and see. Your next period might not be as bad as this first one.
good luck! -tabby
Hi Ann,
Yes it is normal. My midwife suggested taking a tablespoon of Black Strap molasses a day to help with iron depletion and it worked. I was not fatigued like I had been. You can take it straight or I added it to oatmeal every morning.
Blessings,

Hi A.,
As I recall, my youngest is now four, it just takes a while to "normalize" again after birth, nursing, etc.... I wouldn't be too concerned yet. If you are still cycling in another week then I would consider putting a call in to my OB/Gyn.
Yes that is normal. As long as you are nursing your hormones are not back to "normal". It will take your body some time to adjust, even possibly months. You could have a period a couple of times a month, heavy bleeding for days in a row, or have times where you dont have a period. It can take months for your bosy to return to a routine schedule.
WOW, a year! That's great! My periods came back just three mo's after my last baby arrived (though I am still nursing him). It was odd, too. Very little and very dark at first. Then, within the same month I had full flow for seven days before it slowed down, like you describe. I think it's perfectly normal, at this stage when your body is getting back into the groove. Call your gyn, and if it's not slowing down in the next day or so, make an appointment. Oh, and you might take an iron tablet or eat some spinach, if your iron tends to get low.
I had a period that lasted 2 weeks.... 7 days were heavy to normal and the 7 days after that was just spotting. 2 weeks later I had another period. It took me about 6 months before my cycle was regulated. Every body is different.
Mine came back 2 months later and lasted ~a week each time. Normal, I think.
