OK, ladies. I have yet another question...I am currently breastfeeding my daughter who is 5 months old. I have not gotten a period since I've had her but I do have cramping. Is it normal to have monthly cramps without a period while breastfeeding? I know my period can come while breastfeeding, but I am just wondering if this is my body adjusting. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
It is completely normal to have cramping with no period. Your body is just going through the motions. Even though you aren't bleeding.. to your body you are still having a period. So it will do everything else you normally have during a period but without the bleeding. I did the same thing when I breastfeeding my daughter. I would get hungry, get bloated and all. Plus it could also be your uterus contracting back to it's normal size and all. Unless it gets to be painful or begins to not feel like your normal cramping feeling I would see a Dr. But for now you are fine. Good luck with the breastfeeding. It is the best thing ever.

Hi A.,
It most definitely is normal to cramp and not have a period while breastfeeding. One thing I do want to remind you of, even though you haven't had a period, you can still get pregnant. I was still breastfeeding my first daughter and hadn't had a period and then found myself pregnant again when she was just 6 months old. I didn't have a period for over 1 year. (I lost that baby at 4 1/2 months.) If you are not planning another baby in the near future, please make sure you correctly use birth control. Good Luck!

You may want to take a pregnancy test. The same thing happened to me and I was 2months pregnant.

Hi! Yes its normal. I too breastfeed and I started having cramps last month, thought FOR SURE I was going to start a period put on a pad.... then nothing. So Im pretty sure its normal. You could always call your OB, especially if they get worse or dont go away. But mine did and nothing ever since! Hope this helps :)

Not sure if it is common, although I do believe anything is possible. It happens to me too, I have a 4 and 1/2 month old! I'm dreading my first period, how about you?

I would just start using Fertility Awareness Method as described in "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". You'll know if and when you ovulate and then if you keep having cramps for a seemingly non-reason, you can see a doctor about it.

You might be getting your period this month. I started my period after 6 months of nursing and had it regularly through the end of my nursing at 10 months. If it isn't cyclical and continues constantly I would call the doctor just to make sure.

Sounds pretty normal. I think that all the other responses were correct. I still breastfeed my 18mo old once a day and have yet to start my period. I have cramping and pinching too and asked my doctor just last week and he said it was normal. I would advise taking an ept at least once a month to be sure of pregnancy.

Hi A.! Congrats on the new baby! I too went through this after the birth of my second baby. I nursed her for 16 months, had no period the whole time, she weaned herself, I had 2 periods & got pregnant. I did cramp every month around the time I was supposed to get my period so this is probably nothing to worry about. Enjoy the little ones!

A.,

In my experience, I know it to be true, no periods while nursing, yet you will endure a lot of cramping. The nursing it self really helps your uterous go back to its original size, so you will feel that, sometimes it can be really painful. It is God's gift to the nursing women in the world. Nurse your baby, and you will get back to how you were much quicker!

Congrats on your baby!
